“Not Ready Reading Drive X”: Meaning and Safe Troubleshooting

“Not ready reading drive X” means a requested read could not proceed, but the message alone does not identify the cause. Check the media and target drive, then troubleshoot for the specific device.

“Not ready reading drive X” means the system or program could not read from the drive it addressed. “X” stands for a drive letter; the message alone does not identify a failed part or a single fix. Check that the intended media is present and seated, then confirm the program is targeting a drive that is actually available.

What the error means

The wording appears in a DOS-era Itronix GoBook II manual as “Not ready reading drive X (where X is any drive letter),” followed by “Abort, Retry, Fail?” In that manual’s card-socket context, the instruction is to make sure the media is fully inserted and then retry. That advice applies to the described device scenario, not automatically to every drive that produces the message.

The same broad wording can arise from different layers: missing or poorly seated removable media, a program configured for a drive that is no longer present, or a device-specific connection or hardware problem. Identify the drive letter, hardware, operating system, media, and full prompt before choosing a repair.

First checks, in order

  1. Capture the full message. Note the drive letter, the program that displayed it, and whether the prompt offers Abort, Retry, or Fail. Older DOS wording and application-specific messages may point to different device contexts.
  2. Check the intended media. Make sure the expected disk, card, or other removable media is present and fully seated. Retry only after checking it. The GoBook II manual’s reseating instruction is specifically about media in its card socket.
  3. Confirm the target drive is available. Check whether the drive letter still corresponds to the intended device and whether the media or device has been removed. A program may retain a destination setting for a drive that is no longer connected.
  4. Use troubleshooting for the identified hardware. Floppy, PC-card, and CD-ROM examples have different causes and checks; do not assume one device’s fix applies to another.

How likely causes differ by device

Context Possible cause or check What the guidance applies to
Floppy drive A or B IBM lists incorrect drive identification in setup, no diskette inserted, a poorly seated cable, and a supervisor password among possible causes. It also recommends checking the diskette and testing it in another drive. IBM’s floppy-drive troubleshooting, not every drive-letter error.
Harvest Data on an Allegro using a PC card A map/data destination may still be set to a PC card that has been removed; restore the map/data drive selection in the software. The HarvestMaster Allegro example.
CD-ROM CDR101 The Plextor UltraPlex manual discusses disc, connection, SCSI termination, and hardware/software conflict possibilities. That manual’s UltraPlex configuration; it does not show that an unknown drive-X error is an optical-drive problem.

If the drive is a floppy drive

IBM Support says the error may result from incorrect drive identification in the F1 CMOS setup utility. Its floppy-specific checks include verifying the setup identification, checking that a diskette is inserted and in good condition, and trying the diskette in another drive. If those checks do not resolve the issue, inspect cable seating and possible hardware conflicts before moving on to diagnostics or replacement.

If a program expects a removed card or drive

In HarvestMaster’s Allegro example, map data was set to a PC card that had been removed. The remedy is to restore the map/data drive setting in the Harvest Data software. This illustrates why an error can reflect a stale destination setting rather than a broken drive; use the relevant program’s instructions and confirm the correct destination for your setup.

If the prompt is a CD-ROM CDR101 error

Consult the manual for the exact optical drive and configuration. Plextor’s UltraPlex manual discusses the disc, connections, SCSI termination, and hardware/software conflicts for its own setup. Those possibilities should not be generalized to an unidentified drive or system.

What not to conclude from the message

  • It does not, by itself, prove that the drive has failed.
  • It does not establish that formatting, replacing the drive, or buying an adapter is the right next step.
  • It does not identify whether the underlying issue is media, configuration, connection, or hardware.

For a narrower diagnosis, record the drive letter, device model, operating system, media type, program, and complete prompt, then follow the device-specific manual or support guidance.
