An Xbox 360 may not connect to Wi-Fi because the console needs a wireless adapter, the network is out of range or hidden, the adapter is not recognized, or the router’s password or wireless settings do not match the hardware. Start by identifying whether your console has built-in wireless, then check network visibility, adapter connection, and compatibility. An Ethernet test can help distinguish a Wi-Fi-specific problem from a broader network issue.
First identify the Xbox 360’s wireless hardware
Not every Xbox 360 setup uses the same wireless hardware. Check your console model and determine whether it has built-in Wi-Fi or requires an external Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter. If your model needs an adapter, confirm it is attached and recognized before changing router settings. Microsoft’s adapter manual describes connecting the accessory and proceeding to network configuration.

If your Wi-Fi network does not appear
- Move the console closer to the router. Retry the network scan near the router to rule out a weak signal or excessive distance.
- Check whether the router broadcasts its network name. The network name is also called the SSID. If the router hides the SSID, the network will not appear as a normal selectable network; check the router’s wireless settings or enter the network details using the console’s available setup options.

If the external adapter is not recognized
- Check whether the adapter’s power light is on.
- Check the USB connection at the console and, if used, the connection between the adapter cable and its USB extension cable.
- Disconnect and reconnect the cables, then check again.
A power or USB connection problem is separate from whether the router or internet connection is working, so resolve adapter recognition before troubleshooting the wireless network itself.

Check the password and wireless compatibility
Confirm that you are entering the router’s current Wi-Fi password and that its security mode matches what the specific Xbox 360 wireless hardware supports. Microsoft’s manual for the external Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter lists 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n standards, and WPA, WPA2, and WEP security. Microsoft also announced a 2009 system update adding WPA2 support for that adapter in its Xbox Wire update announcement.
Those specifications apply to the accessory covered by the manual; do not assume that every console revision, built-in radio, or third-party adapter supports the same bands or security modes. If your router offers multiple bands or compatibility settings, check the exact console and adapter model before changing them. Use Ethernet to narrow down the failure
If practical, connect the Xbox 360 to the router with an Ethernet cable and run the relevant network check. If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not, focus next on the wireless adapter, signal, SSID, and router compatibility. If both connection paths fail, investigate the wider local network or service path as well. This comparison helps isolate where to look; it does not guarantee that a cable will resolve account, service, or other network problems.
Before buying a replacement adapter
First establish that your console actually requires an external wireless adapter. If it does, verify the adapter’s compatibility with your console, its condition, and what is included before buying. Legacy hardware availability and listings can change, so do not assume a particular model is currently available or suitable without checking its details.
