Norton Keeps Flagging a File? How to Check It and Restore It Safely

Norton’s alert may be a false positive, but familiarity isn’t proof of safety. Update and scan first, report persistent detections, and understand the risks before restoring or excluding a quarantined file.

A file you recognize can still be unsafe, so don’t restore it just because Norton’s alert seems wrong. First update Norton and run a Full Scan. If the detection continues, submit the file to Norton for review and inspect its quarantine details. Restore it—or create an exception that suppresses future detections—only if you are confident the file is safe; Norton warns that restoring quarantined files is a high security risk.

Before restoring a file, check whether Norton is still detecting it

A familiar name or a file you expected to download does not prove that the file is safe. Norton says a persistent detection after its false-positive reporting workflow is treated as malicious and that it does not suggest running the item. That is Norton’s product guidance, not an independent assessment of your particular file.

Update definitions and scan

  1. Open Norton and run LiveUpdate. Install any available updates and definitions.
  2. Run a Full Scan and check whether Norton finds remaining threats or processes.
  3. If Norton still flags the file, report it to Norton before bypassing protection.

Norton recommends updating definitions and running a Full Scan before reporting a persistent false positive. If an alert appeared only once and did not recur, Norton also recommends a scan to check for remaining processes. Norton’s guidance for repeated detections explains the reporting flow; its false-alert instructions cover the update-and-scan steps.

Report a suspected false positive to Norton

Use Norton’s False Positive report flow if the file is still being detected. Norton’s repeated-detection instructions ask for the file, your email address, and a brief description. Its general submission instructions say to include the detection name and Alert ID shown in the alert, the relevant file, and an issue description.

The false-alert page says updated definitions addressing an analyzed detection may be released within 48 hours; neither statement guarantees an individual outcome or a fixed resolution time. See Norton’s file-submission instructions.

Inspect the quarantined item before choosing an action

On the documented Windows interface, open Norton > Security > Security History, then select Quarantine from the recent-history list. Select the item and review File Insight and its origin details before acting. Norton’s Quarantine instructions describe these steps.

What restore and exception options do

Option What it does Security consequence
Restore Returns the item to its original location when available. Does not repair the file. Norton warns that restoring quarantined files poses a high security risk.
Restore as Places the item in a location you choose. Does not repair the file; restoring it still carries the risk Norton describes.
Create exception & restore Restores the item and creates an exception for it. The exception prevents future detections of that item; it does not make the file safe or repair it.
Send for analysis Submits the item to Norton for review. Requests vendor review without requiring you to bypass protection.

Norton says, “Exclude a program from the Norton scans only if you are confident that the program is safe.” If you cannot establish that confidence, leave the item quarantined and submit it for analysis rather than restoring it or excluding it.

If you decide to restore or exclude the file

Proceed only if you are confident in the file’s safety. In Security History’s Quarantine view, select the item and choose the action that matches your intent. A restore does not repair the file; an exception also suppresses future detections for that item. Review the confirmation carefully before completing the action.

For exclusions, Norton documents different paths by platform:
