For consistent AI-generated game art, treat character identity, art style, and scene composition as three separate controls. Approve a canonical character reference and a short design guide first; then use character references for identity, style references for the look, and pose or layout guidance for scene structure. These methods help steer iterations, but they do not guarantee identical results or production-ready assets.
Separate character identity, art style, and scene layout
Many consistency problems come from asking one prompt or reference image to do several jobs. A character reference should help preserve who the character is. A style reference should guide qualities such as palette, medium, texture, and lighting. Pose and composition guidance should control what the character is doing and where they sit in the frame.

Those controls are not interchangeable. Midjourney’s Style Reference documentation says the feature transfers visual qualities rather than copying the pictured person or object. A separate March 2024 Character Reference announcement described matching a character to a reference image while the feature was being tested; that announcement alone does not establish current availability or syntax.

Write a compact character bible that distinguishes identity-defining traits from details that can change. This gives you a consistent checklist when you generate new poses, expressions, or environments.

Create a reference sheet showing the traits you need to preserve, select an approved anchor image, and keep both with the character’s design notes. A reference sheet is a practical production aid, not a guarantee that a generator will reproduce every feature accurately.
Choose a workflow that fits the control you need
A hosted generator may offer built-in character, style, or image references. A configurable node-based workflow, such as ComfyUI, can combine references with editing and other controls. The available evidence does not establish a universal winner: evaluate tools on your own character and scene requirements rather than assuming one approach is more accurate.

Lock the visual direction with a style reference
Choose one approved image or a small, coherent set to guide the game’s visual language. Describe the intended medium, palette, contrast, texture, and lighting in plain terms so the reference has a clear purpose.
For Midjourney versions 6 and later, its Style Reference guidance documents reuse of a style reference and the --sw parameter, with a documented range of 0–1000 and a default of 100. Those figures and controls are specific to the product documentation and may change. The same guidance recommends describing the desired content, keeping prompts simple, and avoiding style words that conflict with the reference; it is product-specific advice, not a universal prompt formula.
Change one kind of thing at a time
Once identity and style are approved, hold those inputs steady while changing a single category—such as pose, expression, action, or setting. If you alter the character description, style reference, composition cue, and model settings all at once, it becomes harder to tell which change caused a mismatch. This is a practical iteration strategy, not a documented guarantee of better results.

Keep scene prompts focused on the new content while repeating the identity traits that matter. When a workflow offers separate character and style controls, use each for its own purpose instead of expecting a style reference to preserve a face or costume.

For a new scene, provide a structural cue—such as a pose, line-art, or depth guide—when the chosen workflow supports it. Pair that cue with the approved character reference so the scene can change without making the identity reference carry the full burden of controlling layout.
The 2025 CHI paper ParaTroupe describes a game-concept workflow combining ControlNet Union structural cues, IP-Adapter inputs derived from selected character images, and regional masks for character placement. This shows one research approach to separating structure, identity, and placement; it does not mean those controls are available in every hosted generator.

Use image-to-image and masked edits for targeted changes
When you already have a useful composition, editing from that image may preserve more of its arrangement than generating from text alone. In ComfyUI’s Stable Image Ultra example, an input reference and a denoise control are documented; lower values keep output closer to the input, while higher values move it toward text-to-image behavior. The example describes a 0.0–1.0 range, but node and provider behavior is specific to that integration.
For a localized correction, a mask or inpainting pass can target a face, emblem, hand, or prop rather than regenerating a whole approved image. ComfyUI’s GPT-Image-1 node documentation describes an optional input image and mask for inpainting. A mask narrows the intended edit area; it does not guarantee that every surrounding pixel will remain unchanged.
Keep an asset log and review at game scale
Store the inputs and decisions that produced each approved asset. This makes it easier to reproduce a workflow, compare iterations, and investigate why a character or scene drifted.

- Save the approved character and style references.
- Record prompts, model and version, workflow or node setup, and relevant settings.
- Record a seed when the tool exposes one. ComfyUI’s Stable Image Ultra example documents seed use for reproducing or fine-tuning results, but a seed is not an identity lock across changes to prompts, models, versions, or other settings.
- Keep approved outputs alongside the inputs and settings used to create them.
Review a contact sheet at the game’s target display size. Check silhouette, face, costume, palette, lighting, and placement across the scenes in which the character appears. Small mismatches that are easy to miss in a full-size image may stand out at gameplay scale. This is a practical review method rather than a validated quality-assurance protocol.
What current documentation does—and does not—establish
The cited product pages document available controls and example workflows, while ParaTroupe describes one research workflow. They do not provide a head-to-head comparison, a consistency rate, or proof that any workflow will reliably produce final game assets without review. Product features and integrations can change, so confirm current documentation for the specific tool and version you use.
