Nonlinear frequency compression (NLFC) is a hearing-aid processing method that compresses sound frequencies above a selected point into a lower frequency region. It is intended to make some high-frequency speech information more audible to people who cannot effectively hear it at its original frequency. Whether that helps depends on the listener, the hearing aid’s implementation, and its fitting.
How nonlinear frequency compression works
Think of NLFC as a two-region frequency map. Frequencies below a selected start point are largely left where they are; frequencies above it are squeezed into a smaller, lower-frequency range. This differs from simply turning up the volume: the processing changes where some sound information appears in the frequency spectrum.

In one first-generation implementation discussed in a research review, a cutoff frequency determined where compression began and a compression ratio determined how strongly frequencies above it were compressed. Controls and algorithms can differ between devices, so those parameters are not a universal formula for every NLFC system. Mao, Chen, and Kuo’s 2017 review describes the approach and its fitting considerations.
Why a hearing aid might use NLFC
Some people with sensorineural hearing loss have steeply sloping high-frequency loss. Certain speech cues may fall beyond the useful output bandwidth of a hearing aid or in a range where the listener cannot make effective use of amplified sound. NLFC aims to move selected high-frequency information to a region the listener can hear more readily.

The Atom One features two analog dials — one for volume (V) and one for frequency (F). Turn clockwise to increase, counterclockwise to decrease. That's it. Start low and work your way up to find your perfect setting. Ideal for seniors or first-time hearing aid users who want straightforward, no-tech controls.
- 24-HOUR RECHARGEABLE BATTERY — NO DISPOSABLE BATTERIES EVER: Get a full day of hearing on a single charge. Place the hearing aids in the USB-C charging dock and they'll be fully recharged in about 3 hours. Devices automatically power on when removed and power off when docked — no on/off switch to fumble with. No tiny batteries to buy or replace. Just dock at night, wear all day
- NANO DESIGN DISCREETLY FITS IN THE EAR — COMFORTABLE ENOUGH TO FORGET YOU'RE WEARING THEM: Audien's ultra-small nano design discreetly fits in the ear for a virtually invisible look. Comes with 3 sizes of silicone ear domes (small, medium, large) so you can find the right fit for your ear. Universal design — not left/right specific — so either aid fits either ear. Pull-wire included for safe, easy removal.
- AUDIEN SOUND CHECK — EXPERT-GUIDED SETUP INCLUDED WITH EVERY PURCHASE: Every Atom One purchase comes with Audien Sound Check, a complimentary expert-guided setup session. Our specialists walk you through proper insertion, dial adjustment, and finding your ideal volume and frequency settings — so you hear clearly from day one. No guesswork, just expert support.
High-frequency consonant cues, including information relevant to /s/ and /z/, are examples studied in this context. The aim is improved access to those cues—not a guarantee of better speech understanding for every listener.
How NLFC differs from other frequency-lowering methods
Frequency-lowering methods are not interchangeable: they alter different parts of the spectrum in different ways.
| Method | What it changes | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Nonlinear frequency compression | Compresses frequencies above a selected start point into a lower frequency region. | Leaves frequencies below the start point largely unchanged. |
| Linear frequency compression | Lowers the entire frequency axis proportionally. | According to the review, it preserves relative spectral structure, including formant relationships, but lowers perceived pitch. |
| Frequency transposition | Shifts high-frequency material downward. | The shifted material can overlap with sound that was not processed. |
| Vocoder-based frequency lowering | Transfers high-frequency temporal envelopes onto lower-frequency carriers. | It uses a different remapping approach from NLFC. |
These descriptions summarize distinctions in the 2017 review; specific device implementations may vary.

What studies say about benefits and limitations
Evidence is mixed, and results differ by outcome. The 2017 review reports that some studies found better recognition of high-frequency consonants such as /s/ and /z/, while others found no change or worse results. Sentence-recognition findings also vary: longer use may benefit some listeners, but studies do not agree. The review finds limited evidence that NLFC improves vowel perception.
One study-specific result cited in the review is that 34 of 36 listeners in McCreery et al. (2014), a group with mild-to-severe sensorineural hearing loss, showed a small increase in audibility with NLFC compared with conventional processing. That count concerns audibility in that study; it is not an overall success rate or proof of a speech-recognition benefit. The review also describes a separate study that found no significant difference in audibility among children after at least six months of use. The review summarizes these differing results.
A 2024 study by Brennan, Rasetshwane, Kopun, and McCreery examined the influence of the stimulus level used to prescribe NLFC on speech perception. Its publication details identify the question studied, but the available abstract information does not establish an outcome, so no result can be inferred from it. The study record lists the article, “The Influence of the Stimulus Level Used to Prescribe Nonlinear Frequency Compression on Speech Perception.”

How fitting settings affect the trade-off
Fitting aims to make useful high-frequency cues more audible without damaging the identity of lower-frequency speech or making sound unpleasant. A lower start frequency brings more of the spectrum into the processed region; stronger compression remaps frequencies more forcefully. In some test conditions, lower start-frequency settings and increased compression impaired recognition. Less aggressive combinations were often better tolerated, but findings depend on the task and implementation.
There is no universal cutoff frequency or compression ratio supported by these sources. The appropriate settings depend on the listener’s audiogram, listening needs, and the particular hearing aid. In one study, cutoff frequency influenced sound-quality ratings more than compression ratio; among the hearing-impaired listeners in that study, tested settings did not produce statistically significant rating differences for speech in noise or music. Those findings do not establish how every listener or device will respond.
What to discuss during an evaluation or fitting
An audiologist can assess whether NLFC is a reasonable option and check whether it improves access to the cues that matter to you. Useful questions include:
- Which speech sounds or listening situations are difficult, and are the relevant cues likely to be high-frequency?
- What start point and compression strength are being considered, and how will changes affect both audibility and sound quality?
- How will the fitting be evaluated for speech understanding and comfort, rather than relying only on whether high-frequency sound is detectable?
- Could processing affect vowels, lower-frequency cues, music timbre, or listening comfort?
- What follow-up adjustments are available if the sound seems distorted or the expected cues remain difficult to hear?
Because algorithms differ across manufacturers and device generations, results from one study or implementation should not be assumed to predict another person’s outcome.
