The Nokia 7.1 can still handle calls, messaging, maps and other light tasks, but in 2026 it is an eight-year-old phone with Android 10 listed as its highest official version, an aging non-removable battery and carrier compatibility that depends on the exact model. Consider one only at a very low price, with a return option, a battery in good condition and confirmed support on your carrier. It is not a good choice for a secure, dependable long-term primary phone.
What is the Nokia 7.1?
HMD Global introduced the Nokia 7.1 on October 4, 2018, as a Nokia-branded Android One midrange phone. It sat above the Nokia 6.1 in that period’s lineup and was marketed around its display, ZEISS-branded cameras and Android software policy. It is a distinct model from the Nokia 7.1 Plus, Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 7.2 and Nokia 8.1. HMD described it as its first phone with PureDisplay, including HDR10 playback and real-time SDR-to-HDR conversion. Those are launch-era features, not evidence that its screen matches a current premium display. HMD’s launch announcement

Design, screen and everyday features
At 160g with a 5.84-inch screen, the Nokia 7.1 is relatively compact compared with many current phones. Its glass-and-metal design, USB-C port, headphone jack, NFC, expandable storage and rear fingerprint reader still cover useful everyday needs. The trade-offs are a dated notch and bezels, a glass back that can crack, a non-removable battery and USB 2.0 data speeds. It has no 5G or high-refresh-rate display.
#1 Best Overall
The Full HD+ LCD remains sharp for text and video. It is not OLED, so do not expect OLED-level blacks or an always-on display experience. HDR10 support and SDR-to-HDR conversion were part of HMD’s PureDisplay pitch, but HDR capability alone does not guarantee a visible benefit in every app or video. Compared with newer phones, the panel is also behind on brightness, refresh rate and outdoor readability.
How does performance hold up?
The Snapdragon 636 was a midrange processor in 2018; by 2026 it delivers an entry-level experience. It can be adequate for calls, messages, email, maps, music, light browsing and casual social use. Streaming may also work if the apps and digital-rights-management requirements remain compatible with the phone’s software.
Expect compromises with demanding games, heavy multitasking, large modern apps and computationally intensive camera features. The 3GB/32GB configuration is particularly constrained: Android and preinstalled apps occupy some internal storage, and a microSD card is better suited to photos and media than to improving app speed. If choosing between configurations, the 4GB/64GB version is preferable.
Software, Android version and security
The phone launched with Android 8.1 Oreo, received Android 9 Pie and is listed by HMD with Android 10. HMD’s launch commitment for Android One was two Android-version upgrades and three years of monthly security patches from launch. That original guaranteed support period has long expired. HMD’s page identifies Android 10, but the available official information does not establish a current 2026 security-patch level or a specific final patch date. Android One described the phone’s software program at launch; it does not mean the device receives updates indefinitely. On an unsupported phone, vulnerabilities may go unpatched, and banking, payment, work or authentication apps may impose requirements it cannot meet. A factory reset does not update Android. Custom ROMs are an advanced, model-specific route and can affect banking apps, DRM, camera functions or carrier features.
Camera: useful for casual photos, not a modern camera system
The rear setup combines a 12MP main camera with a 5MP depth sensor, and the front camera is 8MP. HMD advertised ZEISS optics, Dual Pixel autofocus on the main camera, portrait effects, HDR photography, manual controls and electronic video stabilization. The launch materials also describe controls for settings such as white balance, ISO and shutter speed. HMD’s launch announcement
For a working unit, daylight photos may be adequate for casual sharing, but the main camera matters more than the depth sensor. Portrait cutouts, low-light images, processing speed, autofocus and stabilization are unlikely to match current budget phones. These are not results from a current controlled test; actual performance also depends on the individual phone’s condition and camera software. Do not assume 4K recording from megapixel counts alone; confirm video modes for the exact regional model.
Battery life and charging on a used phone
The original battery is a 3,060mAh unit sealed inside the phone. HMD said USB-C fast charging could reach up to 50% in 30 minutes under its stated conditions; that launch claim is not a guarantee for an aged battery, every charger or every cable. HMD’s launch announcement

- Up to 5 hours of GSM talk time (3.5 hours using 3G), up to 280 hours of standby time
In 2026, the condition of the specific battery matters more than its original capacity. After roughly eight years, degradation is to be expected, including in unused stock. Watch for rapid percentage drops, random shutdowns, unusual heat, slow charging or swelling. Battery replacement requires opening the phone because the battery is permanently adhered, so budget for professional repair unless you already have phone-repair experience. iFixit’s Nokia 7.1 repair information
Carrier compatibility: check the exact model before buying
Nokia 7.1 variants can differ in LTE bands and other network details. HMD’s user guide identifies model numbers including TA-1097, TA-1095, TA-1100, TA-1085 and TA-1096. The model number alone does not prove that a phone will work on a particular network. HMD’s user guide
For US buyers especially, ask the carrier to confirm the exact model’s LTE bands, VoLTE support and network eligibility. A device can support a frequency yet fail carrier certification or provisioning requirements. Also verify that the phone is unlocked, its IMEI is not blacklisted, and calls, texts and mobile data work after activation. Do not assume universal compatibility across US carriers.
Used Nokia 7.1 inspection checklist
- Find the exact TA model in Settings → System → About phone, on the handset label, or in the seller’s documentation; match it against your carrier’s requirements.
- Check the Android version and security-update date in Settings. Treat Android 10 as the highest version listed by HMD, not proof of current security support.
- Inspect the screen for cracks, discoloration, touch dead zones and other display defects; test touch across the full panel.
- Test both rear cameras and the selfie camera, autofocus, flash, microphones, speakers, vibration, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and fingerprint reader.
- Insert a SIM and confirm calls, SMS and mobile data. Ask the carrier to confirm VoLTE and activation eligibility for that exact model.
- Connect USB-C charging and, if possible, test data transfer. Look for a loose port, intermittent charging or excessive heat.
- Check battery behavior during use for rapid drain, abrupt shutdowns or a swelling back cover. Ask whether the battery has been replaced and by whom.
- Confirm the phone is not locked to a previous owner’s Google account after reset, and check IMEI and SIM-lock status before paying.
- Prefer a seller offering a return period and disclosing battery condition. Avoid stock-only photos or listings that omit the model number.
- Account for repair costs: an inexpensive handset may cease to be a bargain if it needs a battery, screen or charging-port repair.
Known risks and repair concerns
Battery wear, charging-port damage and cracked glass are practical concerns on an older handset. Community posts also describe Android 10-era battery drain, camera trouble, reboots and boot-loop symptoms, but these are individual reports, not measured failure rates or proof that every unit is affected. Inspect the device you are buying rather than treating anecdotes as a diagnosis. If a phone is already rebooting, stuck at startup or unreliable with its camera, do not assume a reset or inexpensive repair will fix it. The battery’s adhesive and the phone’s age can make repair economics unattractive. iFixit repair reference
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Compact, light form factor | Android 10 is the highest version HMD lists; original guaranteed security period has expired |
| Sharp Full HD+ display | Old processor and no high-refresh-rate display or 5G |
| Headphone jack, USB-C and NFC | Non-removable battery may be badly aged |
| Rear fingerprint reader and microSD expansion | LTE bands and VoLTE compatibility depend on variant and carrier |
| 4GB/64GB variant offers more headroom than 3GB/32GB | Battery or other repairs can outweigh the low purchase price |
Who should buy the Nokia 7.1?
It is worth considering only if the price is very low, the intended use is light, the battery has been tested or replaced, the exact model is accepted by the carrier, and the seller allows returns. Its compact size, headphone jack and NFC may appeal to someone seeking a basic secondary handset. A newer budget phone or supported refurbished midrange phone is the safer direction for most primary-phone buyers; compare update policy, carrier compatibility, battery condition and total cost rather than choosing by brand or purchase price alone.
Avoid it if you need current security updates, reliable banking or work-app support, sustained gaming performance, strong low-light photography, 5G or dependable all-day battery life. It is also a poor fit for someone who needs a low-maintenance phone and may be unable to troubleshoot aging hardware or app compatibility.
Final verdict
The Nokia 7.1 was a well-equipped compact midrange phone for its time, but its useful life in 2026 is limited by age rather than by any one missing feature. Buy only as a very cheap, inspected device for basic tasks, with battery condition and network operation verified. For a secure, reliable primary phone, choose a newer model with active updates and carrier support.
