process.uptime(), a health endpoint, Kubernetes probes and an external uptime monitor answer different questions. Use them together: process uptime describes the age of the current Node.js process; readiness and liveness guide traffic and restart behavior; an independent monitor checks reachability from outside the process; and diagnostic and deployment records help explain what happened. None of these signals, alone, establishes that a release should be rolled back.
What each uptime and health signal tells you
Start by deciding what you need to know: whether the process restarted, whether it should receive traffic, whether a container should be restarted, whether a user-visible path is reachable, or what runtime state existed during an incident.

| Signal | What it observes | Operational value or consequence | Question it helps answer |
|---|---|---|---|
process.uptime() |
Elapsed time since the current Node.js process started, in seconds including fractional seconds. | Provides process-age context; it does not establish that clients can reach the service. | Did this process start recently, or has it been running longer? |
| Liveness probe | Whether the container meets its configured restart-health test. | After configured failures, Kubernetes can restart the container. | Is the process in a state where restarting it is appropriate? |
| Readiness probe | Whether the container should receive traffic. | A failing Pod is removed from the matching Service endpoints. | Can the service currently meet its traffic-serving contract? |
| Startup probe | Whether startup has completed. | Gates liveness and readiness checks until it succeeds. | Does initialization need more time than the usual liveness window? |
| External uptime monitor | Reachability from outside the application process. | Can alert on failures the process itself cannot report. | Does the check exercise the user-visible network path? |
| Diagnostic report | Node.js runtime and system state at a point in time. | Supports later problem determination. | Can this artifact be tied to the affected deployment and incident? |
Node.js documents that process.uptime() returns the number of seconds the current process has been running, including fractions of a second. A low value can be useful context after a restart, but a high value does not prove that the service is reachable or healthy. See the Node.js process documentation.
How to use health endpoints and Kubernetes probes
Keep the health checks distinct according to the action each one triggers. The endpoint should report the condition relevant to its caller; Kubernetes then interprets probe results differently for startup, readiness and liveness.

Startup: allow initialization to finish
A startup probe gives a slow-starting container time to initialize before Kubernetes begins liveness and readiness checks. Use it when normal startup would otherwise exceed the liveness window; it prevents those other checks from acting prematurely while startup remains incomplete.
Readiness: control whether traffic is sent
Readiness is about serving traffic now, not whether the process exists. When readiness fails, Kubernetes removes the Pod from the matching Service endpoints. Decide which conditions mean the service cannot meet its traffic-serving contract. Do not automatically make every backing dependency a readiness failure: the Node.js Reference Architecture notes that in some designs returning a dependency problem in the HTTP response is preferable to failing readiness. See its health-check guidance.
Liveness: restart only when a restart can help
Liveness failure is a restart signal. Keep the check lightweight and tied to a condition for which restarting the container is a plausible recovery. If a shared dependency is down, restarting every application container may not fix it and can add load to an already stressed system. Kubernetes warns that incorrect liveness checks can cause restarts under load and contribute to cascading failures; see the Kubernetes probe documentation.

Kubernetes lists defaults of 10 seconds for periodSeconds, 1 second for timeoutSeconds, and 3 for failureThreshold. These are configurable probe defaults, not universal alert thresholds or recommended values for every service. Tune them for the application and the action a failure causes.
Why an external monitor is still needed
A health endpoint can respond only while enough of the process and its network path remain functional. It cannot reliably report that the process has crashed or that a client-facing network path is broken. Node.js recommends a monitor in a separate process to detect application failures and recover or restart as needed. Its process documentation states: “To restart a crashed application in a more reliable way, whether ‘uncaughtException’ is emitted or not, an external monitor should be employed in a separate process to detect application failures and recover or restart as needed.”
Make the monitor independent of the process it checks, and choose a check that represents the reachability you care about. Alerting and recovery are separate policy decisions: a monitor might page someone, route traffic away, or invoke a platform recovery action. There is no universal alert threshold, paging schedule or rollback action established by these platform documents.

What metrics Kubernetes exposes—and what they do not show
Kubernetes exposes the cumulative counter prober_probe_total, labeled by container, namespace, pod, pod UID, probe type and result. It can help show probe outcomes by workload and check type. It is platform telemetry, not a replacement for application request and failure metrics; a probe passing does not establish that real requests are succeeding. Details are in the Kubernetes system metrics reference.
There is no universal Node.js metrics API design established by these sources. Choose application metrics that let you assess actual request behavior alongside probe outcomes, and retain enough deployment context to compare behavior across releases.

Node.js diagnostic reports are JSON summaries that can include stack traces, heap information, libuv handles, platform details and resource usage. Node.js documents ways to trigger them on uncaught exceptions, fatal errors, signals or programmatically, and describes them as useful for problem determination. See the Node.js report documentation.

A report is runtime evidence, not a complete deployment record. To reconstruct a possible regression, correlate diagnostic artifacts with the incident timeline and the relevant service or instance. Retain:
- Timestamp and service or instance identity for each artifact.
- The deployment or revision identifier active at the time.
- Alert state and the relevant health, request and failure metrics.
- Probe outcomes and restarts, where Kubernetes is in use.
Kubernetes probe results can show readiness and restart-related decisions, and the probe counter can add detail about type and result. Neither automatically supplies every deployment fact needed to justify rollback. Rollback criteria are a release and service policy decision; define them using the evidence and risk tolerance appropriate to the system rather than treating one failed health check as an automatic rollback rule.

A practical way to combine the signals
- Expose distinct health meanings. Provide lightweight checks for startup completion, traffic readiness and liveness where the platform needs them; do not make their meanings interchangeable.
- Configure probe actions deliberately. Use a startup probe for slow initialization, readiness to control traffic, and liveness only for failures where a restart is a reasonable remedy.
- Monitor from outside the process. Check the user-visible network path independently so a process crash or broken path is not invisible to an in-process endpoint.
- Observe real service behavior. Compare probe telemetry with application request and failure metrics instead of treating a passing probe as proof that users are unaffected.
- Keep incident context together. Associate reports and metrics with timestamps, instance or service identity, deployment revision, alert state and probe behavior.
- Apply a separately defined release policy. Decide who or what pages, routes traffic, restarts a container or rolls back a deployment; no single health endpoint defines those actions for every service.
