An insert-only ledger makes reward decisions easier to audit by recording each event—such as a completion report, approval, reversal, or payout result—without rewriting earlier events. It can show what the platform recorded and when; it cannot, by itself, prove that a user completed an offer, guarantee payment, or stop a sufficiently privileged administrator from changing the database.
What an insert-only reward ledger does—and does not—prove
A mutable balance stores a result. An event ledger stores the history from which that result can be derived: what was reported, how it was evaluated, what decision followed, and whether a payout was attempted. Keeping those events makes it possible to trace a balance back through the system and investigate disagreements.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That history is evidence of what your system recorded, not independent proof that an earning event was valid. An accepted event still depends on the offer terms, qualifying action, attribution evidence, and the rules applied to that evidence. Likewise, an app balance is not the same thing as cash delivered. Make the distinction visible in both the data model and the product.

- Auditable history: each decision or correction points to its relevant offer, source event, actor, and reason.
- Not absolute immutability: database owners and sufficiently privileged operators retain powers that ordinary roles do not.
- Not an earning oracle: a ledger cannot establish that an attribution signal is truthful or that the offer was delivered as promised.
Supabase’s Shared Responsibility Model places responsibility for access levels, security controls, data, and application architecture on the project team. Supabase recommends row-level security (RLS); it does not remove the need for sound backend authorization or careful management of privileged credentials.

Model the history as events, not as an editable balance
A ledger row should capture a fact about a decision or transition. A separate balance can be calculated from relevant entries or maintained as a cache that can be rebuilt. If the balance is the only record, a correction or support investigation may have no reliable history to consult.
Illustrative ledger shape
The following fields are an example, not a Supabase-prescribed schema. Choose types and constraints to match the identity, offer, and attribution systems in your product.

Define a consistent sign convention for amount_minor—for example, positive credits and negative reversals—and use integer minor units rather than floating-point amounts. Record the currency explicitly. Keep provider payloads or other sensitive details in appropriately protected storage; do not treat an unrestricted JSON field as a safe place for secrets.

Use a trusted server path or a narrowly designed database function to validate and write events. A client should not be able to declare its own reward earned merely by submitting an insert, nor should it receive a privileged database secret. Give user-facing clients only the read access the product needs, constrained by RLS. If users can read their own history, the row ownership model must reliably associate each entry with the authenticated user.

Record transitions and corrections without rewriting history
A useful progression might be reported → pending_validation → approved → payout_queued → paid, with branches such as held, rejected, or reversed. Represent each transition as a new event, with an actor, timestamp, and reason or evidence reference. A reversal or adjustment should point to the original entry; it should not silently replace it.
Callbacks and retries can deliver the same completion more than once. A stable idempotency key backed by a uniqueness constraint lets the write path recognize duplicates rather than crediting them twice. Also define how to handle late or out-of-order events: record the received facts, apply an explicit transition rule, and retain a reason when a signal is held or rejected.
Version offer terms. Linking a reward decision to the offer version shown to the user helps answer a later question about what the platform represented at the time, even if the offer changes afterward.
Restrict writes by role, and protect the privileged boundary
PostgreSQL treats INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, and TRUNCATE as separate privileges. Revoke the relevant write and destructive privileges from ordinary application roles, then grant only the operations those roles actually need. In Supabase, verify the effective grants for the roles used by your clients; revoking a privilege from one role does not necessarily undo a grant made elsewhere.

RLS and SQL privileges solve different parts of the access problem. RLS governs which rows a role can see or change when policies apply; privileges determine which operations the role can attempt. Neither makes a client trustworthy. A client-facing role should not have permission to insert arbitrary earned-reward events simply because a row policy permits it.
- Keep migration and table-owner credentials separate from ordinary application credentials, and restrict who can use them.
- Route earning decisions through trusted server-side validation, with the minimum required database privileges.
- Never expose a service or other privileged secret in browser or mobile application code.
- Review policies, grants, database functions, and secret access together; a broadly privileged function can undermine otherwise narrow client permissions.
Table ownership remains a stronger authority than ordinary grants. An owner or sufficiently privileged administrator may change grants, alter or drop objects, disable controls, or use administrative access. PostgreSQL’s Privileges documentation describes this distinction. Describe the design accurately as append-only for specified roles, not as tamper-proof or cryptographically immutable.
Use triggers as guardrails, not as a promise of immutability
A trigger can reject selected updates or deletes, and Supabase’s Event Triggers guide describes controls such as preventing selected DDL actions. These controls are useful for catching mistakes or constraining routine paths, but sufficiently privileged operators can change the configuration or use an override path. A trigger is not a substitute for role design, ownership controls, or oversight of administrative actions.
Supabase Database Webhooks are an integration mechanism: the documentation describes them as trigger wrappers that make asynchronous requests through pg_net. Use a webhook to notify another system when appropriate, but keep the database event as the ledger record. A failed notification should be detectable and retryable; it should not erase or silently replace the underlying event.

Reconcile rewards across the systems that make and fulfill the promise
A ledger becomes useful to operations when a team can compare its entries with the records that led to them and the records that followed. Reconcile at least these four views:
- Offer terms: the offer identifier and version, qualifying actions, reward amount, and any stated delivery timing.
- Completion evidence: the attribution provider’s signal, its stable event identifier, and the time it was received.
- Platform decision: the ledger event accepted or rejected, the reason, and the actor or rule responsible.
- Delivery attempt: the payout provider reference, status history, result, and reconciliation time.
Track mismatches that remain unresolved and give support staff a way to investigate them. A user-facing status should distinguish reported, pending validation, held, approved, queued, paid, rejected, and reversed outcomes where those states apply. Explain what the user can do next when an event is pending or missing, rather than presenting a number with no context.
The Federal Trade Commission’s 2020 Tapjoy complaint and consent order is a case-specific example of why offer disclosures, reward delivery, support access, and patterns in complaints or conversions matter operationally. It is not a universal data schema or legal checklist. The order discusses validating whether the offered reward was delivered under the promotion’s stated terms; teams should have a documented way to compare those terms with completion and payout outcomes.
Keep backup and recovery separate from reward validation
Backups and point-in-time recovery can help restore database state after loss or corruption. They do not show that an earning event was legitimate, and restoring a database does not explain why a decision was made. Supabase’s Database Backups documentation describes features that depend on plan and database version; confirm the current retention, recovery window, and prerequisites for the specific project rather than promising a recovery point based on a generic plan description.

- 150 ruled sheets designed for structured accounting, recordkeeping, and data logs.
- Hardbound black cover offers durability and professional appearance.
- Ledger ruling supports clear entry alignment and consistent tracking.
- Premium paper reduces ink bleed for crisp, permanent records.
- Ideal for finance teams, education, business administration, and archival use.
Supabase also notes that Storage API objects are not included in database backups and that a restore can make a project unavailable while it runs. If reward evidence, offer assets, or support records live outside the database, define how those records are backed up as well. Set recovery objectives, maintain any independent copies your risk model requires, and test a restore procedure before relying on it.
Make the status understandable to players
Players should be able to tell whether a reward is awaiting validation, approved but not yet sent, held for review, paid, or reversed. Explain what each state means in plain language and provide a support route for a missing or disputed reward. Do not label a displayed balance as money already paid or irrevocably owed unless that is actually what the product and its terms establish.
The FTC’s 2024 consumer guidance, “Task scams create the illusion of making money,” gives a blunt warning: “Never pay anyone to get paid, or to get a job.” Reward platforms should make any legitimate conditions and delivery timing clear, and should never ask users to pay an unexpected fee to unlock a promised payout.
