Node.js Sending Domain Setup: Verify DNS, Test Mail, Then Cut Over

A Node.js email cutover depends on more than DNS: verify the provider’s records, test the application transport, and retire old routing only when it is safe.

To onboard a sending domain for a Node.js app, publish the exact DNS records required by your email provider, wait until that provider reports the domain as verified, and test the application’s sending transport separately. During a provider migration, keep the existing route in place while you add and verify the new setup; remove old records only when the relevant provider’s instructions say it is safe. DNS visibility, provider verification, SMTP authentication, message acceptance, and inbox placement are separate checks.

Which DNS records do you need for email sending?

There is no universal DNS bundle for Node.js email. The sending provider determines the required record names, types, values, and routing behavior. Use its current onboarding instructions or dashboard as the source of truth, rather than copying another provider’s records.

For example, Cloudflare Email Service documents MX records for bounce routing and SPF, DKIM, and DMARC TXT records. That is an example for Cloudflare Email Service, not a set of records to copy for a different service. Cloudflare Email Service also requires Cloudflare DNS. Cloudflare’s sending-domain setup was last updated June 25, 2026.

Map each domain and record to its purpose

Before making changes, identify the sending domain, the visible From domain, the envelope or bounce domain, and any provider-specific subdomain. They may be the same, but do not assume they are. Check which names the provider actually uses and what each record does before editing the zone.

Inspect existing MX and TXT records first. MX records may support inbound mail as well as a provider’s bounce routing, so do not replace them casually. Follow the provider’s directions for the particular hostname and service.

Keep SPF to one policy record

Cloudflare’s domain guidance says there should be only one SPF record. If the new sender needs authorization, reconcile its mechanism with the applicable existing SPF policy instead of publishing a second SPF TXT policy record. Review the complete policy before changing it so other authorized senders are not accidentally removed. Cloudflare’s domain configuration documentation explains its record management and migration behavior.

How do you verify a sending domain?

  1. Collect the provider’s exact values. Record each owner name, type, value, and any status requirement from the provider’s current setup page or dashboard.
  2. Inspect the existing DNS zone. Identify current SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and MX records that may be affected. Preserve unrelated inbound-mail routing.
  3. Publish the required records. Enter each value at the exact owner name specified. For DKIM, if Nodemailer manages signing, its documentation places the public key at <selector>._domainkey.<domain>; use the selector and domain configured in the application.
  4. Check DNS answers. Confirm the authoritative zone contains the values and that DNS lookups return the expected records. A visible record is not the same as a provider showing the domain as verified.
  5. Check the provider’s domain status. Use its dashboard or verification workflow to confirm the provider recognizes the setup. The sources do not establish a universal DNS propagation interval, so avoid relying on a fixed wait-time promise.

Where Nodemailer manages DKIM, its DKIM documentation describes checking the TXT answer with a DNS lookup and troubleshooting signing configuration.

How do you test Node.js email sending separately?

Domain verification answers whether the provider recognizes the DNS setup. A Node.js transport test answers whether the app can reach and authenticate to its sending transport. Neither alone proves that a particular message will be accepted or delivered to an inbox.

Identify the transport in use

First establish whether the application sends through SMTP, a provider-specific transport, or an integration such as Nodemailer’s SES transport. Nodemailer supports multiple transports; it does not require a particular provider. The transport determines its connection settings and authentication method. See the Nodemailer transport overview and the relevant transport’s instructions.

Run the SMTP check, then send a controlled message

For an SMTP transport, Nodemailer’s transporter.verify() checks DNS resolution, TCP connectivity, a TLS upgrade where applicable, and SMTP authentication without sending a message. A successful result is useful, but it does not test whether the server will accept a particular From address. That depends on the server’s policy and can only be checked by sending under that policy. Nodemailer’s SMTP documentation describes the check’s scope.

After the transport check passes, send a controlled test message using the intended sender identity. Inspect the received message’s headers and authentication results to confirm how the receiving system evaluated it. Do not treat a successful transport check or a provider’s verified-domain badge as an end-to-end deliverability or inbox-placement test.

How do SPF, DKIM, and application signing fit together?

SPF and DKIM are distinct DNS-based authentication mechanisms, and DMARC is another domain policy record. Follow the sender’s instructions for their exact configuration. Publishing a DKIM public key is not the same as configuring the application or provider to sign messages with the corresponding private key.

Nodemailer can sign messages with one or more DKIM keys, which its documentation identifies as useful for key rotation or sending on behalf of different subdomains. Keep private keys secret, and make sure the configured signing domain and selector match the public key published in DNS. A mismatch can prevent the intended signature from validating. See Nodemailer’s DKIM configuration and troubleshooting guidance.

Some transports or providers may modify message headers. Nodemailer’s SES transport excludes Date and Message-ID from its DKIM signature because SES may replace those headers. If using SES, account for that behavior rather than assuming every signed header remains unchanged in transit. Nodemailer’s SES transport documentation covers this handling and SES-specific sender verification.

How can you switch email providers without interrupting sending?

Keep the old working setup available while preparing the new one, and follow both providers’ migration directions. Do not remove existing records merely because the new provider’s DNS values have been published: first establish that DNS and the new provider’s domain status are correct, then test the configured application transport and send a controlled message.

  1. Keep the existing route in place while adding the new provider’s records where the DNS setup supports it.
  2. Check DNS answers and confirm the new provider reports the domain as verified.
  3. Test the Node.js transport independently, then send a controlled message and inspect its authentication results.
  4. Retire old provider records only in the order supported by the providers’ migration instructions.

Cloudflare documents a specific Email Service migration: unlock routing records, add the new provider’s records alongside them, verify the new setup, and then remove Email Service records. For Cloudflare Email Service, deleting the Email Sending domain removes the bounce MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records Cloudflare created and stops outbound sending through that service. This behavior is specific to Cloudflare; other providers may have different removal steps. See Cloudflare’s domain configuration instructions.

What to confirm before cutover

  • The new provider’s exact DNS records are published at the intended owner names.
  • SPF authorization has been reconciled rather than added as a second SPF policy record.
  • The provider reports the domain setup as verified.
  • The Node.js application can connect and authenticate to its configured transport.
  • A controlled message has been sent, and its received headers and authentication results have been inspected.
  • The old route is removed only after the relevant providers’ instructions permit it.
