For a Node.js app that needs a persistent server process, root access, custom server software or Docker Compose, a VPS is the closer fit. For a website built around supported server-side rendering, API routes or discrete background tasks, Netlify Functions may fit better. Managed Node.js hosting sits between those approaches: it simplifies app deployment without giving you the same server-level control as a VPS.
These are different deployment models, not interchangeable plans. Choose based on how your app runs first; compare prices only after accounting for your region, billing term, renewal rate and expected usage.

Which Node.js deployment model fits your app?
| Option | How it runs | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed Node.js hosting | Deploy an app through a managed hosting service. | Developers who want a streamlined deployment and less server maintenance. | Less server-level control than a VPS. |
| Node.js VPS | Run and manage Node.js on a virtual server with root access. | Apps that need persistent processes, custom server configuration or Docker Compose. | You take on more server setup and operational responsibility. |
| Netlify Functions | Deploy server-side functions as part of a Netlify site and its build workflow. | Sites using supported framework rendering, API endpoints, webhooks or scheduled and background tasks. | Functions have execution and payload constraints and are not a persistent VPS. |
The comparison is based on vendor-published product descriptions and configuration documentation, not independent performance tests. No latency, uptime or benchmark results establish one option as universally faster or more reliable.

The UK managed-hosting page describes deployment through GitHub or an IDE, managed SSL, CDN, WAF and DDoS protection, managed MySQL, and daily or on-demand backups. Its displayed plan lists 2 vCPU, 3 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe storage and unlimited bandwidth. These are vendor-listed details for that UK page, not a performance measurement or a specification to assume for other regions.
#1 Best Overall
This approach is worth considering if you want app-level deployment and do not want to administer the underlying server. It is not the same as getting root access: choose a VPS instead if your application depends on server-level configuration or a workflow such as Docker Compose.
When does a Node.js VPS make more sense?
A VPS gives you root access and more control over the server, runtime and deployment. The same UK provider page lists Docker Manager, firewall management and weekly backups for its VPS offering. Its displayed plan lists 2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB NVMe storage and 8 TB bandwidth. Treat these figures as a plan snapshot published for the UK market, not as evidence of application performance.
Rank #2
A VPS better matches an app that must keep a server process running, needs custom server configuration, or requires Docker Compose. In exchange for that control, you are responsible for more of the setup and operation.

How do Netlify Functions work for Node.js?
Netlify Functions are server-side code deployed with a site. They can support API endpoints, webhooks, scheduled and background jobs, as well as framework-generated functions for server-side rendering and API routes. Netlify’s platform primitives documentation describes functions as version-controlled, built and deployed with the site; supported framework adapters can generate functions during that workflow. This can suit a site-centered project, but it does not turn functions into a continuously running server.
Rank #3
Execution and payload limits
Netlify’s function configuration documentation lists these defaults and limits. They describe function invocations, not a whole-server resource allocation.
| Function setting | Documented value |
|---|---|
| Default memory | 1024 MB |
| Synchronous execution limit | 60 seconds |
| Scheduled execution limit | 30 seconds |
| Background execution limit | 15 minutes |
| Buffered request or response payload | 6 MB |
| Streamed response payload | 20 MB |
| Background request or response payload | 256 KB |
Binary request data sent as base64 takes more space after encoding, reducing the effective binary request payload to approximately 4.5 MB. Check the current function configuration documentation against your workload before relying on a limit.
Rank #4
Netlify’s product page says credit-based plans allow function configuration up to 4 GB of memory and 2 vCPUs, and that background functions can run for up to 15 minutes. Those configurable maximums are not equivalent to a fixed VPS allocation. The product page also reports that more than 700 million functions run on Netlify each day; that is a vendor-reported scale claim, not an independently verified statistic. See Netlify Functions.
Node.js runtime version
Netlify’s configuration documentation says the function runtime follows the Node.js version used by the build when that version maps to a valid AWS Lambda runtime that is not scheduled for deprecation within two months. It also documents an environment-variable override and fallback behavior. Check the current runtime and framework-adapter guidance for your project rather than assuming every build version is available for functions. Details are in Netlify’s function configuration documentation.

How should you compare the cost?
Do not compare a promotional monthly figure with a usage-based platform without fixing the assumptions. The cited managed-hosting and VPS prices are UK promotional rates tied to upfront multi-month commitments; the renewal prices differ. Netlify’s pricing model includes credits and usage categories such as web requests and delivered content. The available pricing information does not establish a universal cheapest option or a like-for-like total for a particular app.
- For a hosted plan, check the country-specific checkout, upfront term, taxes and renewal rate.
- For Netlify, estimate builds, traffic, function executions and delivered content against the current plan and your account details.
- Compare the same expected workload and billing period, rather than treating a VPS resource allocation and function limits as equivalent.
Because regional prices and plan details can change, verify the current terms on the applicable UK hosting page and Netlify’s pricing page before deciding. Neither source supports a broader price claim across all countries or usage levels.
Quick Recap
A practical way to decide
- Identify whether the app needs a persistent process. If it does, compare VPS options; request-driven functions are a different operating model.
- Check control requirements. Root access, custom server configuration and Docker Compose point toward a VPS. If you want managed app deployment, assess managed hosting.
- Map site features to functions. For framework rendering, API routes, webhooks or scheduled and background work, confirm that the required framework adapter and execution pattern are supported by Netlify.
- Check limits against real requests. Compare execution duration, memory and payload sizes with the work each function will do, including base64 overhead for binary data.
- Model the full cost. Use the right region, term, renewal and expected traffic, builds and function usage.
