Which platforms can run Valheim?
Iron Gate’s June 7, 2026 announcement listed PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. The game’s 1.0 launch followed on September 9, 2026; these are current platforms, not announced future releases.

Recent official patch notes refer to fixes for PlayStation 5 and Switch 2, further confirming support after launch. The September 25, 2026 notes said crossplay remained functional during that patch rollout, even though patches reached platforms at different times. That is a report about that rollout, not a guarantee that every platform always receives updates simultaneously. (Patch 1.0.16)

Yes. Iron Gate announced full crossplay between the platforms. To join a friend on another platform, the official FAQ says the host can get a join code from the pause menu; the other player enters it in the Join Game section. Iron Gate’s Crossplay FAQ provides the joining details.

Xbox and dedicated servers
An Xbox console cannot host a dedicated server, according to the FAQ. Xbox players can join a dedicated server when crossplay is enabled both on the console and on the server. This is a hosting limitation, not a restriction on Xbox players joining multiplayer games.
Does buying Valheim on one storefront unlock it on another?
Not in every case. The FAQ says an Xbox purchase and a Microsoft Store purchase are reciprocal: buying through either enables play on the other. A Steam purchase is separate and does not let you launch the game through the Microsoft Store. Steam players can still play with friends on other platforms through crossplay.

What is different about the Switch 2 version?
Iron Gate announced mouse mode, touch-screen support for menus, advanced vibrations and gyroscope aiming for Switch 2. These are developer-described control and interface features; the official material cited here does not provide comparative performance measurements that would establish which platform runs the game best. (Valheim is coming to Switch 2)

- Playing with friends: Crossplay is supported, and the FAQ describes joining another platform with a code.
- Choosing a store: Xbox and Microsoft Store purchases are reciprocal under the FAQ; Steam is a separate storefront entitlement.
- Running a dedicated server: Xbox can join a dedicated server but cannot host one.
