You can’t use NVIDIA Control Panel’s NVIDIA-specific settings on a Windows PC that has no NVIDIA GPU. The Windows Store app requires an NVIDIA GPU and a DCH display driver, according to NVIDIA Support. Installing the app does not add the hardware it is designed to configure.
If you need to change screen resolution or refresh rate, use Windows display settings instead. First check whether your PC really lacks NVIDIA graphics: a hybrid-graphics laptop may have both integrated graphics and an NVIDIA GPU.

Check whether your PC has an NVIDIA GPU
-
Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
-
Look for an NVIDIA adapter in addition to any integrated graphics adapter. If you are unsure what the listed hardware means, check your computer maker’s specifications.

A laptop using integrated graphics for its built-in screen may still have an NVIDIA GPU for supported workloads. The active display adapter alone does not establish that the computer has no NVIDIA hardware. NVIDIA describes this hybrid-graphics arrangement in its Optimus overview.

- AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
- OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
What to do if there is no NVIDIA GPU
If Device Manager and the manufacturer’s specifications show no NVIDIA GPU, NVIDIA Control Panel has no supported NVIDIA device to configure. NVIDIA documents the panel’s graphics-processor and 3D controls as NVIDIA hardware features; they cannot be enabled by installing the app on a PC without that hardware. See NVIDIA’s preferred graphics processor help and its 3D settings help.
Use Windows for routine display adjustments
Change resolution or refresh rate
Open Settings > System > Display. For refresh-rate choices, look under Advanced display if that option is available. The choices shown depend on your display, connection, graphics hardware, driver, and Windows version.

Choose a graphics processor for an app
On Windows versions that support it, go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics to set an app’s graphics preference. NVIDIA notes that Windows has controlled application GPU selection since Windows 10 version 20H1, replacing the old selection in the NVIDIA desktop menu; see NVIDIA’s guidance. This Windows option does not provide an equivalent for every NVIDIA-specific setting.

Compare the practical options
| Option | What it can do | Requirements and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Windows display settings | Adjust resolution and refresh rate; set per-app graphics preferences on supported Windows versions. | Available options depend on Windows, the display, connection, graphics hardware, and driver. It does not provide NVIDIA-specific controls. |
| NVIDIA Control Panel | Configure NVIDIA GPU features, including graphics-processor preferences and 3D settings. | Requires an NVIDIA GPU and appropriate driver and app setup. NVIDIA’s Store-app requirement specifies a DCH display driver. |
| Add an NVIDIA GPU | Provide NVIDIA hardware for a compatible PC. | Requires a compatible system and a purchase. It is unnecessary for ordinary display adjustments. |
Should you buy an NVIDIA GPU?
Consider buying one only if you specifically need NVIDIA hardware or its associated controls and your computer can support a card. Check physical fit, power-supply capacity, and system compatibility before choosing hardware; the app requirement alone does not establish which card will work in a particular PC. If you only want to adjust resolution or refresh rate, start with Windows settings instead.
