Check the audio ports on both devices before choosing a cable. If the TV and receiver each have a compatible HDMI ARC or eARC port, connect those ports. If the receiver lacks ARC but both devices have optical audio ports, connect the TV’s optical output to the receiver’s optical input. When the TV also sends video to the receiver over HDMI without ARC, you may need a separate optical cable for sound.
Port labels and supported audio formats vary by model, so consult both manuals before connecting. The steps below help you choose a compatible route and set it up.

Identify the ports you can use
Look at the back or side panels of the TV and receiver, and check their manuals to confirm what each port does. Match an output on the TV to an input on the receiver; a cable cannot make incompatible ports work together.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- HDMI ARC/eARC: Look for a TV HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC and a compatible receiver HDMI port labeled for ARC/eARC.
- Optical digital audio: The TV needs an optical digital audio output and the receiver needs an optical audio input.
- Digital coaxial: Use this only if one device has a coaxial audio output and the other has a matching input.
- Analog audio: Check for compatible audio output and input connections on both devices. The exact connector types matter.
If only one device supports ARC or eARC, that feature will not work between them. Choose another connection supported by both devices instead.

Choose a connection that matches both devices
| Connection | When to use it | Video connection | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC/eARC | Both devices have compatible, labeled ARC/eARC ports. | Audio returns to the receiver over HDMI; connect the labeled ports as the manuals specify. | Confirm both devices support the feature and the receiver port is the correct ARC/eARC port. Sony describes ARC using one High Speed HDMI cable for compatible devices: Sony’s ARC connection guidance. |
| Optical digital audio | The TV has optical out and the receiver has optical in, including when the receiver lacks ARC. | If video travels to the receiver over HDMI, optical can carry TV audio separately. | Verify the ports match and select the receiver’s optical input. Denon documents optical or digital coaxial as alternatives when ARC/eARC is unavailable: Denon’s connection guidance. |
| Digital coaxial or analog audio | There is no matching optical option, but the TV and receiver have a corresponding output/input pair. | Video may need its own connection, depending on the devices. | Check the manuals for the exact connections and supported audio formats; Sony identifies optical or analog audio as alternatives in some cases: Sony’s audio connection guidance. |
Connect and configure the system
- Connect matching ports. For ARC/eARC, connect the TV’s labeled HDMI ARC/eARC port to the receiver port specified for ARC/eARC. For optical, connect the TV’s optical digital audio output to the receiver’s optical input. Follow the model manuals for coaxial or analog connections.
- Add a separate video connection if needed. If HDMI carries video between the TV and receiver but does not support ARC, use a separate optical connection for TV audio when both devices have optical ports. Denon’s AVR-S760H manual shows this arrangement for a TV that is incompatible with ARC/eARC; it is a model-specific example, not a rule for every setup: Denon AVR-S760H manual.
- Select the receiver input. Choose the input that matches the connection, such as Optical or TV Audio. Denon specifies selecting “TV AUDIO” for the digital connection described in its guidance; another receiver may use a different label.
- Set the TV to use external audio. If the TV requires it, change its audio or speaker output setting to the external audio system. Menu names and locations vary by model and software; use the TV manual for the exact path.
- Check any connection-control settings. Some receivers have HDMI Control settings that affect their HDMI or optical setup. Follow the receiver manual rather than assuming a universal setting.
If sound is missing or surround playback is different than expected
No sound
- Confirm that the cable connects an audio output on the TV to a compatible audio input on the receiver.
- Check that the receiver is set to the input used by the cable and that the TV is set to output audio to the external system where required.
- Check both manuals for required HDMI Control or other connection settings.
Sound works, but the desired surround format does not
Check the audio formats supported by the TV, receiver, and connection. Do not assume that every connection carries every format or that both devices support the same formats. Sony notes that, on the TV models covered by its guidance, Dolby Digital Plus does not output over optical; its instructions recommend ARC/eARC with a compatible output device, or setting the TV to Dolby Digital for optical playback. That limitation and those settings are model-specific, not universal: Sony’s audio-format guidance.
Sony also warns that a system may fail to output sound if it does not support the broadcast’s DTS or Dolby Digital format. Check the format supported at both ends before changing cables or settings: Sony’s format compatibility guidance.

A second TV or receiver output is involved
Check which receiver HDMI output is connected. In Sony’s cited setup, HDMI OUT B does not support ARC, so a TV connected there needs optical or analog audio to return sound to the system. This is specific to the described equipment; check your receiver’s manual for its output capabilities: Sony’s HDMI output guidance.
