Importing one into a compatible router can simplify whole-home VPN setup and may deliver substantially higher throughput than OpenVPN, although the result depends on the router, connection and server.
What NordVPN changed
NordVPN’s manual-setup flow now produces a ready-to-import WireGuard configuration instead of requiring users to build or modify scripts. Sign in to Nord Account, open NordVPN, enter Advanced Settings, choose Set up NordVPN manually, select a recommended or searched server, choose WireGuard and click Download config.

The download is a server-specific .conf file. Import it into the official WireGuard client or a router with a WireGuard-client implementation. NordVPN’s server list identifies upgraded servers with a Verified badge; use one of those when available.
WireGuard files versus NordLynx
NordVPN’s applications use NordLynx, its WireGuard-based protocol with NordVPN’s custom double-NAT system. A manually downloaded WireGuard profile is a separate connection method. It requires an active NordVPN subscription, NordVPN service credentials and a compatible WireGuard client or router.

That distinction matters on routers: installing a .conf file creates a standard WireGuard tunnel, while the NordVPN app’s NordLynx implementation is managed inside the app and is not the same router-import workflow.
How to put NordVPN WireGuard on a router
- Open the manual setup area. Sign in to Nord Account, open NordVPN, select Advanced Settings and choose Set up NordVPN manually.
- Pick a server. Use the recommendation tool or search. Prefer a server carrying the Verified badge, and note that each configuration is tied to the server you select.
- Download the profile. Select WireGuard, then click Download config to save the
.conffile. - Open the router’s VPN client. In the router firmware, find the WireGuard-client section and use its import or upload control. The exact menu name varies by manufacturer.
- Supply credentials if requested. Some router interfaces read all required values from the profile; others separately ask for NordVPN service credentials. Use the service credentials associated with your Nord Account, not an unrelated app password.
- Activate and test. Enable the tunnel, check that the router reports a handshake, then verify the public IP and DNS behavior from a connected device.
- Keep a backup profile. Download a second server configuration so you can switch if the first server is congested or unavailable. Switching profiles is a manual operation because every file represents a particular server.
Router requirements and controls to check
The router must support WireGuard in client mode, not merely WireGuard for incoming remote access, and it must provide a way to import a provider configuration. Firmware support is more important than a router’s marketing claim of VPN compatibility.

- Confirm the exact firmware version supports WireGuard client profiles.
- Check whether the interface accepts an entire
.conffile or requires manual entry of keys, endpoints and allowed IPs. - Verify that the firmware offers a kill switch, policy-based routing and DNS-leak protection if those controls matter to your setup.
- Check the router’s encrypted-tunnel throughput rating; its CPU can become the limit even when your broadband line is faster.
- Make sure the router can update or replace profiles without deleting your ordinary WAN settings.
Can WireGuard make a VPN router five times faster?
It can be dramatically faster in some test environments, but “up to five times” is not a universal performance guarantee. TechRadar reported router measurements on 14 October 2026 of more than 950 Mbps with NordLynx versus 173 Mbps with OpenVPN. That is roughly a 5.5-times difference in that particular setup. TechRadar also reported in 2022 that its downloads with WireGuard were regularly two to five times faster than with OpenVPN.
Those figures describe attributed tests, not a speed promise for every router. Actual throughput is constrained by the slowest component: your internet service, the router’s processor, Wi-Fi conditions, encryption implementation, server distance and server load. A router cannot deliver more internet bandwidth than the underlying connection, and low-powered hardware may remain the bottleneck after changing protocols.

Common problems and fixes
The router rejects the file
Check that you selected WireGuard rather than OpenVPN, that the download completed as a .conf file and that the router supports WireGuard client mode. Updating firmware may add support, but do not assume an update changes a router’s hardware throughput.
The tunnel connects but websites show the old IP
Confirm that the tunnel is assigned to the devices you are testing, then reconnect the client and check the public IP again. Review the router’s DNS settings and leak-protection option; a successful handshake alone does not prove that every DNS query uses the VPN.

Speeds are much lower than expected
Test over wired Ethernet first, choose a nearer or less busy server, and compare with the router’s ordinary WAN speed. If the router’s CPU is saturated, a faster protocol cannot remove that hardware limit.

The selected server stops working
Import the backup profile for another server. Because profiles are server-specific, downloading a new file is the reliable way to change endpoints rather than editing cryptographic values by hand.

What to check before buying a VPN router
Confirm WireGuard client support, profile-import behavior, firmware update policy and independent throughput specifications for the exact model. NordVPN’s router guidance cites FlashRouters’ Privacy Hero II as an example of a high-quality VPN router, but availability, pricing and firmware features can change; verify those details with the current seller before purchase.
