Why AI vulnerability reports are overwhelming maintainers
AI systems have dramatically lowered the technical barrier to searching for security flaws. People who would not previously have had formal security experience can now ask an inexpensive model to inspect an open-source codebase, suggest an exploit, and draft a report. Christopher Robinson, Akrites’ chief technology officer and OpenSSF chief security architect, summarized the change as: “Everybody with a $20 account is now a researcher.”

The increase in submissions is not equivalent to an increase in usable security fixes. Maintainers must determine whether each report describes a real vulnerability, a false positive, or an issue already reported by someone else. Similar models often identify the same suspicious code, so different researchers can submit duplicate reports about one underlying defect.
Robinson told The New Stack that reports commonly arrive verbose, inaccurate, or overstated in severity. Many also omit the evidence an engineer needs to reproduce the problem, understand its impact, and prepare a patch. Laura Guazzelli, discussing the initiative’s technical challenge, noted that a model may recognize suspicious code without understanding the project’s broader architecture or the controls applied elsewhere. That missing context makes it difficult for an automated system to distinguish an exploitable flaw from safe behavior.

What Akrites is and what it is designed to do
Akrites is intended to provide shared security incident response across open-source projects rather than leave every maintainer to process the AI-generated workload alone. It uses models for the repetitive first pass—assessing incoming reports and looking for duplicates—then assigns seconded engineers to validate important findings.
Those engineers are not merely approving or rejecting model output. Robinson describes their role as making reports concise and understandable, adding reproducible test cases and proof-of-concept material, and preparing patches before a finding is sent upstream. The approach keeps consequential decisions accountable to people who understand the affected language, codebase, and project community while using automation to reduce repetitive triage.

The human review layer
- Validation: Engineers determine whether the suspected issue is real in the project’s actual context.
- Reproduction: They add test cases and proof-of-concept details so maintainers can verify the behavior.
- Remediation: They develop or refine a patch suitable for review by the upstream project.
- Consolidation: Duplicate submissions are grouped so maintainers do not investigate the same defect repeatedly.
Robinson’s position is not that models should be excluded from security work. He says he trusts the robot for useful assistance but still wants human eyes on important findings.

How an Akrites report would move from model output to upstream fix
- Submission: A vulnerability report enters the shared response process after being generated by an AI-assisted researcher or another reporter.
- Automated assessment: Akrites uses AI to estimate the report’s relevance and identify whether it resembles existing submissions.
- Engineer investigation: A seconded engineer examines the code and the project’s architecture, checks the model’s assumptions, and decides whether the issue is reproducible.
- Evidence preparation: The engineer supplies a test case, proof of concept, and a clearer explanation of impact and severity.
- Patch development: Where appropriate, the response team prepares a proposed fix rather than handing maintainers an unverified claim.
- Upstream handoff: The validated finding and remediation material go to the project for normal maintainer review and integration.
This sequence addresses the gap between discovering a suspicious line of code and delivering information that an upstream maintainer can act on. It also gives projects a single, better-organized response path when several AI systems have found the same issue.

The scale Akrites says it is facing
The figures publicly described by Robinson and reported by The New Stack in 2026 indicate a large operational problem, but they are estimates rather than an independent audit.

Robinson says member support covers infrastructure, large-language-model tokens, and engineering capacity. The participating organizations named in the coverage include Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, AWS, NVIDIA, Cisco, IBM, Red Hat, Citi, and JPMorganChase. He also argues that the resulting fixes should flow back to the upstream projects that depend on them, rather than remain private improvements inside commercial organizations.

Akrites and OSS-CRS: related but different jobs
Akrites is often discussed alongside the open source Cyber Reasoning System (OSS-CRS), but the initiatives emphasize different parts of the response chain. OSS-CRS is described as tooling that an individual project can use to investigate vulnerabilities and generate fixes. Akrites is a coordination and incident-response function spanning multiple projects, reports, and contributor communities.

Guazzelli describes the CRS objective as broader than proving that a report is valid: it should also seek the best patch while avoiding new vulnerabilities or broken functionality. In practical terms, OSS-CRS helps a project operate its own reasoning and repair workflow; Akrites helps coordinate the flood of reports and specialist labor across projects.
What Akrites could change for open-source security
The initiative’s central promise is throughput with accountability. Automated triage can reduce the time engineers spend sorting duplicate or poorly documented submissions, while contributors familiar with specific communities can add the context a general-purpose model lacks. That combination may let maintainers spend more time reviewing fixes and less time reconstructing what a report was trying to say.
It does not eliminate difficult judgments. A high-severity label can be wrong, a model can miss a compensating control elsewhere in the system, and a patch that fixes one path can create a regression in another. Akrites’ stated design therefore treats AI as a filter and assistant, not the final authority. The initiative’s effectiveness will depend on whether its engineers can keep pace with the backlog and whether upstream projects have the capacity to review and merge the resulting patches.
