It is an offer in which a merchant or card issuer may offset interest with an upfront discount, while the issuer still records principal and interest. Compare the final purchase price, interest, discount, fees, taxes and repayment terms—not just the advertised label or monthly instalment.
What “no-cost EMI” means
With a no-cost EMI offer, interest may still be calculated and recorded on the instalment plan; a merchant or issuer discount is intended to offset it. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) says card issuers must disclose the principal, interest and upfront discount before converting a transaction, and that an interest-bearing EMI should not be presented as zero-interest or no-cost. Check that the stated discount actually offsets the interest for your selected tenure. RBI Master Directions on card issuers

“No-cost” does not by itself rule out processing or convenience fees, tax, a different selling price, or loss of another checkout discount. The RBI’s digital-lending publication describes processing fees, including on no-cost EMI plans in its sample, and GST on interest in the cases discussed. Those observations are sample-specific, and the publication year is not established in the surfaced result; they are not a current universal fee schedule. How the options differ
| What to compare | No-cost EMI offer | Conventional credit card EMI |
|---|---|---|
| Interest | Interest may be booked but offset by an upfront merchant or issuer discount. Confirm the discount amount and chosen tenure. | Interest is charged under the issuer’s disclosed schedule; rates can vary by issuer, conversion method and tenure. |
| Other charges | Processing or convenience fees and applicable taxes may still affect the total. | Processing fees and applicable tax on interest or fees may apply under issuer terms. |
| Purchase price and offers | Compare the ordinary selling price and final checkout price. Check whether choosing EMI removes another discount. | Compare purchase price, any card offer and total repayments. The absence of a “no-cost” label does not prove this option costs more. |
| Billing and repayment | Check the issuer’s instalment amount, due date, minimum payment and treatment of other card balances or extra payments. | EMI and unrelated card balances may appear on the same statement. Check how the issuer applies payments above the minimum. |
| Refund or early closure | A merchant refund and cancellation of the issuer’s EMI can be separate processes. Verify what happens to the discount and fees. | Interest adjustments or foreclosure charges may apply. The issuer’s specific rules determine how to close the plan. |
How to compare the real cost
Use the same purchase and repayment period for both options. Write down these figures from the checkout and issuer disclosures:
#1 Best Overall
- Profitability calculations; cash flow function Calculates NPV and IRR for uneven cash flows
- Time-value-of-money and Amortization keys solve problems including: pension calculations, loans, mortgages, etc.
- Ideal calculator for students, managers and statisticians
- Built-in functionality : List-based one- and two-variable statistics with four regression options: linear, logarithmic, exponential and power
- The BA II Plus calculator is approved for use on the following professional exams: Chartered Financial Analyst exam. GARP Financial Risk Manager (FRM) exam. Certified Management Accountants exam
- The selling price and the final checkout price after discounts.
- The principal converted to EMI and the total interest over the full tenure.
- The upfront discount credited against interest, if there is one.
- Processing or convenience fees, plus applicable taxes on interest and fees.
- The monthly instalment and number of instalments.
- What you must pay by the due date if another balance is on the card.
- Late-payment, cancellation, refund and foreclosure charges, and the procedure for each.
Add the amount payable at checkout, all instalments and relevant upfront charges and taxes. Compare that total as well as the payment schedule. A smaller monthly instalment can result from a longer tenure; it does not necessarily mean a lower total cost. If the checkout or issuer disclosure does not clearly show the components, request the written terms before accepting. RBI fair-practices guidance calls for disclosure of fees and prepayment terms and says lenders should inform customers of the all-in cost so they can compare finance sources. Billing, missed payments and available credit
An EMI’s billing rules are issuer-specific. Check when each instalment is due, whether it forms part of the minimum amount due, how missed instalments are treated, and whether paying extra reduces an unbilled EMI or another card balance. Also confirm how the EMI affects your available credit limit; the applicable card terms control.

Federal Bank example: published terms accessed October 4, 2026
Federal Bank’s published credit-card EMI terms distinguish merchant/instant EMI from post-purchase conversion. They list annual rates of 15.99% for merchant/instant EMI and 18% for post-purchase EMI, with monthly rests; GST is stated to apply. The processing fee is 1% of the transaction or ₹99, whichever is higher. These are Federal Bank’s published terms, not market-wide rates. Federal Bank Credit Card EMI Terms and Conditions
The same terms say the instalment is included in the minimum amount due, and that excess card payments are not automatically allocated to unbilled EMI instalments. If an instalment is not paid in full, default interest and fees may follow under the terms. Do not assume that an extra payment closes an EMI: check the issuer’s payment-allocation and foreclosure process.

Refunds and early closure
Before converting a purchase, check the separate rules for returning the item, obtaining a merchant refund, cancelling the EMI and foreclosing the remaining balance. A refund from a merchant does not necessarily cancel an issuer’s EMI automatically. Ask the merchant and issuer what action each requires and whether fees or the offer discount will be reversed.
For Federal Bank’s published terms, the foreclosure charge is 3% plus GST on the remaining principal. The terms also describe a seven-working-day charge-reversal path subject to conditions, including contacting customer care. These are Federal Bank-specific terms, not a general rule for credit-card EMIs. Federal Bank Credit Card EMI Terms and Conditions

Which option should you choose?
- Choose a no-cost EMI offer only if the disclosed discount offsets the stated interest for your chosen tenure and the final price, fees and taxes still produce a worthwhile total.
- Consider conventional card EMI if its disclosed interest and fees result in a lower total payable amount or better repayment terms for you.
- Pause before either option if the checkout or issuer terms do not clearly state the principal, interest, discount, charges, due-date rules and cancellation process.
