Nintendo’s October 6, 2026 holiday-preview account makes a persuasive case for nostalgia as part of the Switch 2’s appeal: it describes familiar franchises and new hardware sharing the same event space. But one hands-on preview and family anecdotes illustrate the strategy; they do not prove it increases sales or reflects what most players want.
What the holiday preview reportedly showed
In its October 6, 2026 account, Pokémon Hub described a New York City Nintendo Holiday Preview featuring Nintendo Switch 2 in both docked and handheld modes alongside established game series. The indexed article named Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, Minecraft, Star Fox, Pikmin, and The Legend of Zelda titles accessible through Nintendo Switch Online.

The account also described a Minecraft Switch 2 upgrade with more vivid visuals and an updated Super Mario Mash-Up pack. It mentioned a Zelda-themed Switch 2 40th Anniversary Edition, a themed Pro Controller with a stand, amiibo, Zelda merchandise, and a chess set. These are details reported in that article, not independently confirmed announcements. The article page itself could not be retrieved directly, so its product claims should not be treated as verified listings or promises of availability.
Why nostalgia is part of the pitch
Nintendo has described retro access as serving two audiences at once: people returning to games they remember and newcomers encountering its characters and series for the first time. In a translated shareholder-meeting response reported by Nintendo Life on July 5, 2026, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said: “We believe that being able to play these games provides a sense of nostalgia for consumers who played them in the past, while also giving new consumers an opportunity to become familiar with Nintendo’s game series and characters.”
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
That rationale helps explain the preview’s apparent mix of generations. A parent might recognize a long-running series while a child experiences it as something new; the hardware can be the shared point of entry. The event account’s family anecdotes make that idea tangible, but they remain anecdotes, not a representative measure of how families respond.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The preview account supports a modest conclusion: Nintendo is presenting familiar franchises alongside Switch 2, and that combination can make sense as a way to connect returning players with newer ones. Nintendo’s stated explanation for retro games independently shows that nostalgia and discovery are both intended parts of the approach.
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
It does not establish that nostalgia caused a commercial result. The material reviewed includes no representative audience survey, sales analysis, or causal evidence that this preview or the broader strategy drives purchases. Furukawa also reportedly said more than 800,000 people had visited the Nintendo Museum by the end of April 2026. That is an attributed museum-attendance figure, not evidence of holiday demand or nostalgia-driven sales.
What to take away as a player or gift buyer
The event is best read as an illustration of Nintendo’s positioning, not as a product announcement checklist. The preview account mentions a range of games and themed items, but does not establish their current prices, release dates, regional availability, or bundle status. Check Nintendo or an authorized retailer for confirmed listings before making a purchase decision.
Rank #3
- Play your way with the Nintendo Switch gaming system. Whether you’re at home or on the go, solo or with friends, the Nintendo Switch system is designed to fit your life. Dock your Nintendo Switch to enjoy HD gaming on your TV. Heading out? Just undock your console and keep playing in handheld mode
- This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
- The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
- Model number HAC 001( 01)
For players, the appeal is plausible: familiar series can give longtime fans a reason to pay attention while offering younger players a first encounter. Whether that translates into sustained interest depends on the games and experiences themselves, not nostalgia alone.
