Nintendo says it tested the idea behind GameChat on a modified original Nintendo Switch, not on a prototype Switch 2. The research console had increased memory and an improved CPU, giving the team a platform to explore built-in communication features before Switch 2 had taken shape.
What Nintendo changed on the prototype Switch
Director Sumikazu Ono said the early research was conducted on “a Switch console with increased memory and an improved CPU.” Nintendo’s account does not specify the upgraded components’ capacity or performance. The console was a development platform for testing an idea, not a consumer model or a prototype of the finished Switch 2.

Nintendo’s Japanese careers account adds that the team began with existing hardware and technologies before a development kit for the next console was available. That let developers explore whether the concept worked without waiting for the next system’s hardware to take shape. Nintendo’s developer interview discusses the early research and the people involved.
Why Nintendo explored GameChat so early
Around 2020, producer Kouichi Kawamoto asked the team to consider built-in features that could help distinguish the next console. The developers imagined a “student lounge”: a social space where friends could play the same game, play different games, watch, or simply spend time together. The phrase describes the design idea, not a measured user outcome.

Meanwhile, teams responsible for built-in features and system software were separately investigating voice chat, live streaming, and microphone noise cancellation. Ono and technical director Eiji Tokunaga brought those efforts together in a demo to see whether the social concept could work as a console feature.
From a six-month prototype to a finished feature
Ono says the prototype took roughly six months to complete. He also says the journey from prototype to final product took much longer. Nintendo’s Japanese careers account describes the next phase as full production, with the team repeatedly implementing, trying, and evaluating ideas. Its exact publication date is not established on the page.

In a later installment of Nintendo’s developer interviews, the company says more than 100 people worked on development. The team also held daily meetings using GameChat to test, verify, and improve the feature. These are Nintendo-reported development details, not independent measurements. Nintendo’s second developer interview describes that work.
What GameChat does on Switch 2
On the released Switch 2, GameChat combines voice and video chat with game-screen sharing. Nintendo Support says a room can include up to 12 friends, with up to four participants sharing video or a screen at once. These are Nintendo’s feature limits, not user statistics. Do you need a camera for GameChat?
- Voice chat: Switch 2’s built-in microphone can be used, so a separate camera is not required for voice.
- Video chat: You need a compatible USB camera, sold separately. Nintendo names the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera as an option.
- Other USB cameras: Nintendo says some may work, but does not guarantee compatibility. You can check one using the console’s Test USB Camera setting.
Nintendo Support currently says GameChat requires a Nintendo Switch 2, a persistent internet connection, and Nintendo Switch Online membership. The membership requirement applies as of October 2026. Nintendo offered access without membership from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026; that open-access period has ended. Nintendo’s 2025 investor presentation also gives that cutoff.
