Former Rockstar open-world designer Jérémy Hartvick believes a native Grand Theft Auto VI release for Nintendo Switch 2 may not make sense for Rockstar, citing audience fit and the risk of a compromised version. That is Hartvick’s opinion, not a Rockstar announcement: the company’s official game page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but does not currently list Switch 2.
What did the former Rockstar designer say?
In remarks attributed to an interview with the YouTube channel Kiwi Talkz, Hartvick said, “I don’t believe it even makes sense.” He argued that GTA’s audience may not substantially overlap with Switch’s audience: “If you’re a GTA fan, you will probably buy the console on which GTA comes out, or you’ll get it for PC if it comes to PC, etc.” Nintendo Wire reported the comments on October 2, 2026.

Hartvick also raised the possibility that a port could mean “delivering a subpar experience.” He reportedly acknowledged that a Switch 2 version would not be “totally ludicrous,” but said he did not think Rockstar would pursue it now and suggested streaming as a better fit. Those are his views, not a stated Rockstar strategy.

Is GTA 6 coming to Nintendo Switch 2?
Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, gives November 19, 2026 as the release date, and provides a pre-order path. The page reviewed does not list Nintendo Switch 2.
That means a Switch 2 release has not been announced on Rockstar’s current game page. It does not mean Rockstar has definitively ruled one out. Hartvick’s comments are an outside assessment, not confirmation of the company’s plans.

Could Switch 2 technically run GTA 6?
The available reporting does not answer that with a benchmark or technical port analysis. Hartvick’s concern about a compromised experience is a reason he thinks the business case may be weak; it is not proof that Switch 2 hardware cannot run the game. Whether a tailored native version could meet acceptable performance and visual targets remains unestablished by these sources.

It is also important to distinguish a native port from cloud streaming. Hartvick reportedly considered streaming a better fit, but that is a suggestion—not a confirmed service, release plan, or guarantee that GTA 6 will be streamable on Switch 2.

Why might Rockstar decide against a Switch 2 version?
Hartvick’s argument is mainly commercial rather than technical. If, as he believes, GTA fans are willing to buy the platform on which the game launches, Rockstar might not gain enough additional audience to justify funding and supporting another version. His second concern is that adapting the game could require compromises that affect the experience.
The cited reports do not provide sales forecasts, a cost analysis, or engineering evidence to verify either point. They describe Hartvick’s reasoning, not a demonstrated calculation of whether a port would be profitable or technically achievable.
