The best-value console is usually the one that lets you play the games you already own and the games you most want—not the one with the biggest subscription catalog. Compare your actual game list, supported formats, subscription plans you would use, and expected spending over the time you plan to keep the system. There is no evidence-based universal winner across Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox.
Start with the games you want to play
Write down two lists: games you already own and games you would buy or subscribe to play. For each, check whether it is available on the console you are considering and whether your copy will work there. A platform’s reputation or a large catalog matters less than whether it includes the specific games you care about.

- Existing library: Note the titles and whether each is a physical disc, digital purchase, or subscription access. Verify compatibility for each game.
- Must-play games: Identify the current or upcoming games that would make you choose one system over another. Compare those titles directly rather than relying on broad claims about exclusives or catalogs.
- How you play: Consider whether you need disc support, prefer to buy games permanently, or are comfortable with a recurring membership and its changing catalog.
Compare subscription access on its real terms
Subscription libraries can reduce the cost of playing games you want, but they are conditional access, not permanent ownership. Xbox says access ends when a subscription expires or a title leaves the library. PlayStation says its catalog varies by membership tier and over time. Check the current catalog for the specific games you plan to play before choosing a plan.
Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo Switch Online adds online play in compatible games, cloud-save backup for supported games, and access to a curated classic-game library. The Expansion Pack tier adds further classic-game libraries and selected downloadable content while membership is active; benefits can vary by system. Nintendo lists these US individual and family 12-month prices on its support page:
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
| US membership | 12-month price |
|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online, individual | $19.99 |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, individual | $49.99 |
| Nintendo Switch Online, family | $34.99 |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, family | $79.99 |
Nintendo also lists standard individual memberships at $3.99 for one month and $7.99 for three months. Prices vary by country and membership duration. Confirm current pricing and included benefits with Nintendo Support and Nintendo’s membership information.
PlayStation Plus
PlayStation Plus has three tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Extra includes the Game Catalog; Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, and cloud streaming. The catalog varies by tier and over time, so check whether the games you want are currently included on PlayStation’s US PlayStation Plus page. For streaming, PlayStation Support says a membership in the correct tier is required, with at least 5 Mbps broadband; 1080p streaming requires at least 15 Mbps and a game that supports 1080p. Streaming is not the same experience as playing from a local download or disc, and availability and limitations can matter. See PlayStation’s catalog and streaming support details.

Xbox Game Pass
Xbox’s US Game Pass pages advertise 500+ games for Ultimate, 200+ for Premium, and 50+ for Essential across supported platforms. Those are publisher-provided counts, not a guarantee that a particular title is included: counts, features, and availability vary by plan, region, platform, and time. Access requires an active subscription and ends if a game leaves the catalog. Review the current plan details and library on Xbox’s US Game Pass page before treating a catalog game as part of your budget.

Xbox Series X|S supports selected Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games. Xbox describes backward compatibility as free for compatible games you already own, but support is title-specific: confirm each game on the Xbox backward-compatibility list before counting it as a reason to choose the console. Most Xbox One games are playable on Series X|S, according to Xbox, but that does not mean every title is.

- Play your way with the Nintendo Switch gaming system. Whether you’re at home or on the go, solo or with friends, the Nintendo Switch system is designed to fit your life. Dock your Nintendo Switch to enjoy HD gaming on your TV. Heading out? Just undock your console and keep playing in handheld mode
- This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
- The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
- Model number HAC 001( 01)
Format is equally important. Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot play physical discs. If your existing collection is on disc, account for that before comparing hardware; check disc support on the exact console model you are considering. For Switch and PlayStation libraries, verify the specific game and format rather than assuming that a previous purchase transfers or runs on a newer system.

Compare realistic costs over the same time horizon—for example, the number of years you expect to keep the console. Use local, current hardware and game prices; the service prices and counts above are US publisher-reported details and may change. Include only subscriptions you would actually maintain, and do not treat every month of a catalog as equivalent to owning the same games outright.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Set a time horizon: Choose how long you expect to use the console, such as three years.
- Add hardware and required accessories: Use the price of the exact model you would buy, accounting for disc capability if you need it.
- Price your wanted games: Add the purchases you expect to make, subtracting only games you can genuinely access through a plan you intend to keep.
- Count membership costs: Multiply the relevant recurring cost by the period you expect to subscribe. Include family plans only if the membership arrangement fits your household.
- Account for access and format: Note disc compatibility, broadband needs if you plan to stream, and the chance that subscription titles may leave a catalog.
This comparison is personal: a subscription can be worthwhile if it covers games you would otherwise buy and you play them while they are available. It may be poor value if its catalog misses your must-play list or you prefer permanent purchases. No neutral cross-platform study establishes a single best-value system, so avoid converting unlike catalog counts and plan features into a brand-wide score.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Choose the console that fits your library
- Choose Nintendo Switch if its compatible games are the ones you most want and the Switch Online benefits or classic libraries matter to you. Compare the standard and Expansion Pack tiers against the specific benefits you will use.
- Choose PS5 if the games you want and the PlayStation Plus tier that includes them fit your play habits. Premium’s streaming benefits are useful only if the relevant games, tier, and connection work for you.
- Choose Xbox Series X|S if your wanted games, Game Pass plan, or verified backward-compatible Xbox library make it the best fit. If you own discs, Series S is not a disc-library solution.
