The NES library is included with standard Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo Classics is the broader label for classic-game collections: standard membership includes NES, Super NES and Game Boy, while Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack adds select platform collections. GameCube – Nintendo Classics is an Expansion Pack benefit for Nintendo Switch 2 only.
What each Nintendo Switch Online tier includes
Nintendo presents classic games as platform-specific collections rather than one standalone NES product. The tier determines which collections you can access.

| Membership | Collections documented by Nintendo | Other distinctions |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online | NES, Super NES and Game Boy | Access to these classic collections lasts while the membership is active. |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | Standard benefits, plus select Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy and SEGA Genesis games | Also includes selected DLC and Switch 2 edition upgrade packs. GameCube – Nintendo Classics is available only on Nintendo Switch 2. |
These are the collections documented on Nintendo’s US membership page and support FAQ. Collection availability and other benefits can vary by system and country.
What “NES library” means compared with Nintendo Classics
The NES library is one collection within Nintendo Classics, not a separate membership tier. Standard Nintendo Switch Online is enough to access it; Expansion Pack is not required for NES games. The broader Nintendo Classics label covers collections for several systems, with some available only through Expansion Pack or on compatible hardware.

Nintendo of America described the combined Nintendo Classics offering as over 270 titles across NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Virtual Boy and selected SEGA Genesis games in a June 16, 2026 news post. That figure is for the collections together, not the NES library alone. Nintendo’s official pages cited here do not establish an exact current NES-only game count.
Examples of NES games and why counts can change
Nintendo’s November 25, 2025 NES update listed Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos and BATTLETOADS, each marked as requiring any Nintendo Switch Online membership. These are examples from that dated update, not a complete or current catalog list. Since Nintendo can add games over time, check the collection in your local eShop for the live lineup.

How access works, including offline play
Classic games in these collections are subscription access, not individual purchases that remain yours after membership ends. Nintendo’s support FAQ says active Nintendo Switch Online members have ongoing access to the NES, Super NES and Game Boy collections; if the applicable membership lapses, access to those collections does not continue.
Nintendo UK says members can play offline, but the console must connect to the internet to verify membership at least once every seven days. That is a UK support statement; check Nintendo support for your region rather than assuming the same wording applies worldwide.

Console compatibility and regional availability
Nintendo identifies GameCube – Nintendo Classics as playable only on Nintendo Switch 2. Do not assume that collection works on the original Nintendo Switch. Other collection and benefit availability can depend on the system and country.
Nintendo says its online service is not available in every country, and the pages cited here do not establish that game catalogs are identical across regions. Check your own eShop and local Nintendo support information for availability and catalog details.

Do you need an NES-style controller?
No. Nintendo describes its Nintendo Entertainment System wireless controllers 2-pack as an optional accessory for Nintendo Switch Online members, not a requirement for playing the NES Classics collection. It is relevant if you prefer an NES-style controller, but the library itself does not require it.
