Choose the Nintendo Switch – OLED Model if you regularly play in handheld or tabletop mode and want its larger OLED screen, wider adjustable stand and enhanced onboard audio. Choose the standard Nintendo Switch if you mostly play on a TV or the lower US listed price matters more. Both play the Nintendo Switch game library and support TV, tabletop and handheld modes.
What’s different between the OLED and standard Switch?
The main difference is the screen: the OLED model has a 7-inch OLED touchscreen, while the standard Switch has a 6.2-inch LCD touchscreen. The OLED model also has more internal storage, a wider adjustable stand, enhanced onboard audio for handheld and tabletop play, and a dock with built-in wired LAN. The two models share the same play modes.

How much better is the OLED screen?
The OLED screen is both larger and a different display technology. Nintendo explains that OLED pixels emit their own light, rather than relying on an LCD backlight; that allows deeper blacks and sharper contrast. The benefit is most apparent when you are looking at the console itself—in handheld mode or when it is propped up for tabletop play. On a TV, the console’s built-in screen is not the display you are using.
#1 Best Overall
- Vivid 7” OLED screen
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- 64 GB internal storage (a portion of which is reserved for use by the system)
- Enhanced audio in handheld and tabletop modes
- Wide adjustable stand
The larger screen is not a performance upgrade. Nintendo’s comparison documents display and convenience differences, not faster game performance. Both consoles support the Nintendo Switch game library, though Nintendo notes that some Labo Toy-Con designs may not accommodate the OLED model’s greater length and larger display, and some experiences may differ.
Is battery life longer on the OLED model?
Not according to Nintendo’s estimates for the revised standard model. Nintendo lists approximately 4.5–9 hours for OLED model HEG-001 and revised standard model HAC-001(-01). The older HAC-001 standard Switch is estimated at approximately 2.5–6.5 hours. Actual runtime varies with the game and use; on a used console, battery condition also matters.

If you are buying a used standard Switch, check its model number: HAC-001 identifies the older revision, while HAC-001(-01) is the revised model with the longer stated estimate. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed runtimes.

Choose the OLED model if you play handheld or tabletop often
- You spend a lot of time playing away from a TV and will benefit from the larger OLED screen.
- You want a wider adjustable stand for tabletop sessions and enhanced onboard audio in handheld or tabletop play.
- You would rather have 64 GB of internal storage than 32 GB before adding a memory card.
- You want wired networking through the dock without buying a USB LAN adapter.
Choose the standard Switch if you mostly play on a TV
- The console will usually stay docked, so the built-in screen difference has little impact on your use.
- You prefer the lower displayed US MSRP: $339.99 versus $399.99 for OLED on Nintendo’s US pages accessed October 7, 2026.
- You are comfortable with the standard model’s 32 GB internal storage, replaceable stand and dock without a built-in LAN port.
If you already own a standard Switch
Consider how often you use its built-in screen before replacing a working console. OLED’s display, stand, audio and storage differences are concrete, but there is no universal answer to whether they justify the cost for an individual owner.
Rank #3
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Storage, docks and accessories to know about
Both models support microSDXC expansion up to 2 TB, with the card sold separately, according to Nintendo’s support guidance. The OLED model’s 64 GB internal storage and the standard model’s 32 GB both include space reserved for system use.
Nintendo says the OLED and standard docks can be used interchangeably. The OLED dock (HEG-007) includes a LAN port that can provide wired networking to supported standard Switch systems; the standard dock (HAC-007) does not. A standard dock needs a separately purchased USB LAN adapter for wired internet, and an ethernet cable is sold separately. See Nintendo’s dock compatibility information.
Screen protectors made for standard Switch or Switch Lite may not fit the OLED model’s larger screen. Check that a protector is specifically sized for the OLED console before buying.
