Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

The trade-offs are a shorter estimated battery range than some standard Switch revisions, imperfect game compatibility and accessories that do not all carry over. Whether it is worth buying depends on which games and features matter to you—and your local price.
How the displays and TV output compare
In handheld mode, Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch LCD with 1920 × 1080 resolution, HDR10 and variable refresh rate (VRR) support up to 120 Hz, according to Nintendo Australia’s specifications. The standard original Switch has a 6.2-inch, 1280 × 720 display, according to Nintendo Malaysia’s comparison. This comparison does not describe the Switch OLED model, whose screen differs from the standard Switch.

For TV play, Nintendo lists Switch 2 output up to 4K with a compatible television and supported software. That is a system capability, not a promise that every game renders at 4K; the actual output depends on the game. Nintendo’s original Switch specification material lists TV-mode output up to 1080p.

Switch 2 has a newer CPU and GPU, and Nintendo says the system can deliver more detailed graphics and faster loading. The company does not provide a quantified, game-by-game performance comparison in its launch announcement, so the improvement should not be translated into a universal frame-rate or loading-time claim.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*

Internal storage rises from 32 GB on the standard Switch to 256 GB on Switch 2—eight times as much, according to Nintendo of America’s April 2, 2025 launch announcement. A large digital library can still use that space quickly. Switch 2 supports microSD Express for storage expansion; a conventional microSD card cannot expand its game storage.
How battery life compares
Nintendo estimates Switch 2 battery life at approximately 2–6.5 hours, depending on games and usage, on its technical specifications page. These are manufacturer estimates, not controlled side-by-side test results.
The original Switch comparison depends on its hardware revision. Nintendo Japan’s battery FAQ gives approximately 4.5–9 hours for the current standard revision and 2.5–6.5 hours for the older revision. Treat those as estimates for the respective revisions rather than a single battery figure for every original Switch. If long handheld sessions are a priority, identify your console revision and compare the relevant estimate with the games you play.

Can you keep playing original Switch games?
Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Some games receive free updates or paid upgrades to improve play on Switch 2, while some titles are unsupported or not fully compatible. Nintendo maintains a title-specific compatibility guide; check it for games that matter to you. For third-party titles, Nintendo advises checking with the publisher.

Switch 2 also has exclusive games, so compatibility works in one direction: an original Switch cannot run Switch 2-exclusive software. Before upgrading, check both whether your existing library works as expected and whether the Switch 2 games you want are actually available for the new system.
Which original controllers and accessories work?
Original Joy-Con and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can connect wirelessly to Switch 2. Original Joy-Con cannot attach to the Switch 2 console, however, and must be charged with a compatible charging accessory or an original Switch. The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2.
Switch 2’s own Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically and can work as a mouse in compatible games. For storage, use a microSD Express card: conventional microSD cards are limited to viewing screenshots and videos captured on the original Switch, not expanding Switch 2 game storage. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance covers supported hardware and game details.

What new communication and play features does Switch 2 add?
GameChat supports voice chat, screen sharing and video chat. Nintendo says a group of up to 12 friends can chat, while up to four can use video with a compatible USB camera sold separately. GameChat requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and an internet connection. See Nintendo’s GameChat Guide and FAQ for feature details.

These additions matter most if your group will use the new communication options or you want to play software unavailable on the original system; they are not necessary for someone whose main goal is continuing to play a compatible existing library.
Who should upgrade?
Switch 2 is the stronger fit if you want a larger, sharper handheld screen, more internal storage, Switch 2-exclusive games, or its newer social and control options. It also offers higher potential TV output with supported games and a compatible television.
Keeping an original Switch can make more sense if your current games meet your needs, your important titles have not been confirmed compatible, or you value the longer estimated battery range of some standard Switch revisions. The right choice also depends on your region: the U.S. $449.99 figure in Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 announcement was a launch suggested retail price, not confirmation of current local pricing or bundles. Check today’s price and availability where you live before deciding.
