Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe right choice depends less on a universal performance ranking than on the games and play style you want. Choose Nintendo Switch 2 for Nintendo’s game library and a console designed for handheld, tabletop, and TV play. Choose Steam Deck if your priority is your Steam library and a portable PC that can also connect to displays and peripherals. Before buying, check the specific games you care about, current local prices, storage needs, and where you expect to play.
At a glance: two different kinds of handheld
| What matters | Nintendo Switch 2 | Steam Deck OLED |

| Built-in display | 7.9-inch LCD, 1920×1080 in handheld mode; up to 120fps in supported games. | 7.4-inch HDR OLED, 1280×800; refresh rate up to 90Hz. |

Which games do you want to play?
Pick Switch 2 if Nintendo games are the deciding factor
Switch 2 is the natural fit if the games you most want are Nintendo releases or if you want one console for Nintendo’s current library and compatible Switch games. Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Check the individual game rather than assuming your entire Switch collection will work. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance is the place to start.

Steam Deck is a portable PC running SteamOS 3, based on Arch Linux, with a KDE Plasma desktop mode. That gives it PC-style flexibility, but it does not mean every PC game runs equally well or works without adjustment. Valve’s Deck Verified information helps identify games designed to work well on Deck. Check the status of the specific games you plan to play; compatibility can change.

- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps

- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
How and where do you want to play?
Switch 2: a console built around three play modes
Nintendo documents handheld, tabletop, and TV play. Its built-in screen is a 7.9-inch 1920×1080 LCD. In supported games, handheld play can reach up to 120fps. When connected to a compatible display, supported games and setups can use TV output up to 4K, with 4K output capped at 60fps; HDR and VRR also depend on compatible games and displays. Nintendo notes TV-mode VRR support was added in a system update released September 10, 2026. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 features and play modes for conditions and details.
Steam Deck: a handheld PC with display and peripheral options
Steam Deck is designed for handheld play, but Valve also documents USB-C display output and support for peripherals. You can connect it to a larger display or use it with PC-style accessories; that flexibility may appeal if you want the handheld to serve more than one role. The OLED model’s built-in 7.4-inch display is 1280×800 HDR OLED with a refresh rate up to 90Hz. Higher refresh rates or a larger external screen do not guarantee that a particular game will render at a matching frame rate or resolution.

- Detachable Joy-Con controllers

Screen, battery, and storage: read the figures in context
Display specifications are not a simple winner-takes-all comparison
Switch 2 offers more pixels on its built-in display: 1920×1080 on a 7.9-inch LCD. Steam Deck OLED uses a smaller 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED panel with up to 90Hz refresh. Resolution, OLED contrast, HDR support, refresh rate, and game-specific output are different considerations; the listed maximums do not show how every game looks or performs.
Battery estimates are manufacturer ranges, not a shared test
Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours for Switch 2. Valve estimates 3–12 hours for Steam Deck OLED and says runtime depends on content. These are separate manufacturer estimates, not results from the same games, settings, or test conditions, so they cannot establish which device will last longer in your use.

Storage can affect what fits on the device
Nintendo lists 256GB of internal storage for Switch 2. Valve lists Steam Deck OLED configurations with 512GB or 1TB and documents support for microSD cards (SD, SDXC, and SDHC). Consider the size of the games you expect to install and whether you are comfortable managing or expanding storage.

Nintendo announced U.S. launch prices in 2025 of $449.99 for Switch 2 and $499.99 for a Switch 2 plus Mario Kart World bundle. Those are historical U.S. launch MSRPs, not verified current retail prices; Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 pricing notice allowed for later changes due to market conditions. See the launch announcement and pricing notice.
Steam Deck prices vary by market and configuration. Compare the current official or local listing for the model you want with the current Switch 2 price where you live. Include the storage configuration you need and any accessories you actually plan to buy; an old launch price is not a fair comparison with today’s checkout price.
