For a documented lifetime-plan example, pCloud defines the term as the account owner’s lifetime or 99 years, whichever is shorter. In either case, keep an independent copy of irreplaceable files and understand how you can recover your account.
What happens to files if you stop paying for iCloud?
iCloud+ is a recurring paid upgrade, rather than a lifetime purchase. Apple’s U.S. terms describe recurring charges and say that if stored data exceeds the applicable iCloud storage limit, Apple may give 30 days’ notice and then delete the excess data. This is what the cited U.S. terms state; terms and account conditions can vary by region and may change. Check the current terms for your country and your account’s storage status before cancelling or allowing a subscription payment to lapse. Apple iCloud terms (U.S.)

Do not treat a cloud account as the only copy of files you cannot replace. Sync makes content available across devices, but a separate backup is a different safeguard: for example, you can copy important files to an external SSD and maintain that copy yourself.
Does “lifetime” cloud storage last forever?
There is no universal definition of a lifetime cloud plan. The promise depends on the provider’s contract. pCloud’s terms define its Lifetime plan as running for the account owner’s lifetime or 99 years, whichever is shorter. That is pCloud’s specific contractual wording, not a general guarantee about lifetime plans or a promise that any provider will operate forever. pCloud Terms and Conditions

Keep free-account rules separate from paid-plan rules. pCloud says free accounts inactive for 12 months may be permanently deleted, while its Lifetime help page says Lifetime accounts have no inactivity clause. The free-account policy does not establish the policy for a paid Lifetime plan, and pCloud’s terms do not establish what another provider promises. pCloud Terms and Conditions · pCloud Lifetime help and pricing
Before buying a plan, read the current terms that apply in your country. In particular, look for the definition of “lifetime,” termination rights, account-inactivity rules, what happens if you exceed the quota, and whether encryption features are included or sold separately.

Can Apple see your iCloud files?
That depends in part on the iCloud data-protection setting. Apple’s default Standard Data Protection encrypts iCloud data, but Apple retains keys for some categories and can assist with account and data recovery. Encryption therefore does not mean that Apple lacks the keys for every type of stored data. Apple iCloud terms and Apple Platform Security · Apple Support: iCloud data security overview
Standard Data Protection
Standard Data Protection is the default. Apple’s documentation describes a mix of protections: data is encrypted, but Apple holds keys for some categories so it can help with recovery. The protection and recovery arrangement depends on the data category, so do not infer that every item has the same level of end-to-end encryption.

Advanced Data Protection
Advanced Data Protection (ADP) is optional and extends end-to-end encryption to more categories, including iCloud Drive files, Photos, Notes, and backups. Some metadata remains protected with standard encryption even when ADP is enabled. Apple’s documentation says it cannot recover ADP-protected data if you lose access and do not have the required recovery method. Apple iCloud terms and Apple Platform Security · Apple Support: iCloud data security overview
ADP is a privacy-and-recovery tradeoff, not a setting to enable without preparation. If you use it, keep your recovery key safe or maintain a recovery contact as Apple requires. If you cannot use the recovery method when locked out, Apple cannot retrieve the protected data for you.

Does lifetime storage include private, end-to-end encryption?
Plan duration and encryption are separate features. pCloud says its standard Lifetime Premium plans do not include pCloud Encryption; its Crypto Lifetime option can be purchased separately. Its localized pricing information describes TLS/SSL protection during transfer and AES encryption, but those statements alone do not establish that every stored file is end-to-end encrypted. Check the exact plan’s encryption coverage and recovery arrangements rather than assuming a one-time purchase includes client-side encryption. pCloud Lifetime help and pricing

The practical comparison is not “lifetime equals private” versus “subscription equals exposed.” For each service, check which data categories are end-to-end encrypted, who holds the keys, what happens if you lose credentials or recovery methods, and whether encryption costs extra.

How to reduce the risk of losing access to important files
- Check the applicable contract. Use the current terms for your country and plan. Confirm duration, recurring charges, termination conditions, inactivity rules, and what happens when you exceed the storage limit.
- Choose the encryption and recovery arrangement deliberately. For iCloud, understand the difference between Standard Data Protection and ADP before switching. For any lifetime plan, confirm whether the advertised encryption is end-to-end, which files it covers, and how you recover access.
- Keep another copy of irreplaceable files. An external SSD can serve as an independent local copy, but you must make and maintain that copy; it does not automatically back up cloud content or replace sync.
- Make recovery information usable. Keep account credentials and any required recovery key or contact method somewhere you can access if a device is lost. A privacy setting that removes the provider’s recovery ability makes your own recovery preparation especially important.
