Choose the Nintendo Switch 2 for Nintendo games and straightforward play on a TV or in handheld mode; choose the Steam Deck OLED for a Steam-centered PC library and SteamOS-style interface; choose the ROG Xbox Ally X for Windows flexibility and Xbox integration. The Ally name covers different models, so check the exact version before comparing screens or prices.
Which handheld fits the games you want to play?
Start with your existing library and where you buy games. These devices do not offer interchangeable libraries, and access to a platform does not guarantee that every individual game will work as expected.

- Switch 2: Best aligned with Nintendo’s first-party games and compatible Nintendo Switch titles. Nintendo announced its release for June 5, 2025. It accepts Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch game cards, but Nintendo cautions that some older Switch games may not work or may not be fully compatible. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 technical specifications and launch announcement.
- Steam Deck OLED: A portable PC designed around Steam and SteamOS. A large Steam library is a strong reason to consider it, but do not assume every PC game runs equally well; check the specific game’s compatibility and requirements. Valve describes the device as a PC and lists its specifications on the Steam Deck OLED product page.
- ROG Xbox Ally X: A Windows 11 handheld with Xbox integration, for someone who wants a more PC-like device. Xbox separately lists the ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Xbox Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026). Check a game’s store, compatibility and anti-cheat requirements, and verify which model you are buying on Xbox’s handheld comparison page.
If a particular game is the deciding factor, confirm it works on the precise device and storefront you plan to use before buying. Platform-level labels alone cannot settle that question.
What differs in everyday use?
Switch 2: the console-first choice
Switch 2 is the clearest fit for someone who wants a conventional console experience, Nintendo titles and handheld-to-TV play. Its detachable Joy-Con controllers support a different style of play from the built-in controls on the PC handhelds. Nintendo’s older-game support is useful for existing Switch owners, but it is not a guarantee for every title.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Steam Deck OLED: Steam-focused, with PC flexibility
Steam Deck OLED combines a Steam-centered interface with PC capabilities. Valve documents USB-C support for video, audio and input, and its Docking Station can connect peripherals and external displays. That flexibility is useful if you want a handheld that can also connect to a monitor, but it is a less console-like proposition than Switch 2.
ROG Xbox Ally X: Windows with Xbox integration
The ROG Xbox Ally X runs Windows 11 and adds Xbox-focused interface features. Windows offers PC flexibility, while also bringing more PC-style setup than a dedicated console experience may require. Its listed processor and memory do not by themselves establish how a particular game performs; use game-specific compatibility information rather than treating specifications as a performance verdict.

- Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***
How do the screens and battery estimates compare?
| Device or model | Screen | Battery information |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | LCD; Nintendo’s technical specification page provides the device details. | Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours, depending on the game and use. The internal battery is 5,220 mAh and not user-replaceable; Nintendo offers service replacement for a fee. |
| Steam Deck OLED | 7.4-inch, 1280 × 800 HDR OLED; refresh rate up to 90 Hz. | 50 Wh battery; Valve estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay, content-dependent. |
| ROG Xbox Ally X | Screen details depend on the exact model; do not apply X20 specifications to every Ally X. | Xbox lists battery capacities of 60 Wh or 80 Wh across the family. Capacity alone does not establish runtime. |
| ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026) | 7.4-inch, 1920 × 1080 OLED; 120 Hz, HDR and VRR. | Xbox lists battery capacities across the family, not a comparable runtime estimate for this model. |
The Nintendo and Valve figures are manufacturer estimates, not results from a shared test. Nintendo says, “The battery life will depend on the games you play.” Valve labels its Steam Deck OLED figure “3-12 hrs of gameplay (content dependent).” Neither estimate establishes which device lasts longer in a particular game or use pattern.
What do they cost, and which ROG model is being priced?
Prices vary by market and date, and the available figures below are not synchronized live street prices. TechRadar’s US comparison lists Switch 2 at $449.99 and Steam Deck OLED at $549 for 512 GB or $649 for 1 TB. ASUS’s US store listed the distinct ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026) at $1,299.99 when accessed on October 5, 2026. That X20 price is not a price for every ROG Xbox Ally X version. Check current local pricing and the exact model and storage before deciding.

What storage and connections should you plan for?
Switch 2 storage expansion
Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards only for game-storage expansion, up to 2 TB. Nintendo says other microSD cards can be used only to copy screenshots and videos from Nintendo Switch, not to expand Switch 2 game storage. If you need more game space, choose a microSD Express card for Switch 2, not a standard microSD card.
Steam Deck OLED connections
Valve documents USB-C video, audio and input support, and a Docking Station for connecting peripherals and external displays. Verify compatibility and the exact dock or accessory before purchase; Valve’s product page describes its Steam Deck Docking Station.
ROG Ally X model identity
Before ordering an ROG handheld, match the full product name and specifications to the listing. Xbox’s comparison identifies the ROG Xbox Ally X with a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24 GB LPDDR5X and 1 TB storage. It lists the X20 (2026) separately, with a different screen specification. Similar names do not mean identical hardware.

A practical decision checklist
- Choose Switch 2 if Nintendo exclusives, compatible Switch titles, detachable controllers and TV/handheld play are your priorities.
- Choose Steam Deck OLED if your games are on Steam, you want a Steam-focused portable PC, and the 7.4-inch HDR OLED screen appeals to you. Check the titles you care about individually.
- Choose ROG Xbox Ally X if you want Windows and Xbox integration and are comfortable with a more PC-like device. Confirm whether a listing is the Ally X or the distinct X20 (2026).
- Before paying, check the exact games you own, their storefront and compatibility needs, whether you want docked play, how much setup you are comfortable with, and the price available in your region.
