To make a Steam Deck or Windows gaming handheld last longer away from an outlet, start by lowering screen brightness and refresh rate, then choose a more efficient power mode and reduce demanding game settings if the tradeoff feels acceptable. On Windows, also check Energy saver, background app use, and the handheld maker’s power controls. The exact options vary by model and software version, and there is no reliable single estimate for how much extra play time these changes will provide.
Start with the display
The display is a convenient place to save power without changing a game’s settings. Use a brightness level that remains comfortable and visible, rather than leaving the screen brighter than you need. Try a lower refresh rate
A high refresh rate can make motion look smoother, but it also uses more power, according to Microsoft’s Windows display guidance. If your handheld exposes a refresh-rate control, try a lower option and see whether the change in smoothness is worth the added runtime to you. Lenovo says 60 Hz is adequate for most situations and energy efficient in its Legion Go Gen 2 user guide; that advice describes this model, not a universal ideal for every device or game.
On a Windows handheld, the control may be at Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, if the device exposes it there. The menu and available rates can vary by model and Windows version. Steam’s support search excerpt says the refresh rate can be lowered in device settings and that setting an application above the model’s refresh-rate cap will not improve performance and may drain charge faster: Steam Support. The available support information does not establish a complete Deck menu walkthrough, so check the current on-device controls rather than relying on a particular menu sequence.

Choose a more efficient power mode
Windows power settings can reduce background work and system power use. Open Settings > System > Power & battery, then try Best Power Efficiency and, where available, Energy saver. Microsoft says Best Power Efficiency limits background activity; Energy saver dims the display and limits background processes. Options and labels can differ across Windows versions and handhelds. Check the handheld maker’s controls
A Windows handheld may have power controls in its own management app as well as in Windows. Lenovo’s Legion Go Gen 2 guide describes thermal modes with different maximum performance, power use, and fan behavior; it identifies Best power efficiency as intended for battery use and Balanced as a compromise between performance and power. These mode names and effects are specific to that guide and model.

On ASUS devices, Power Mode Synchronization can allow Armoury Crate or another ASUS management app to change the Windows power-mode selection. If your Windows mode seems to change unexpectedly, check the manufacturer app and its synchronization settings. ASUS documents this interaction in its power-mode synchronization guidance. Available controls depend on the device and app version.

Reduce the game’s workload if the tradeoff suits you
A demanding game asks the handheld to do more work. Try changing one setting at a time so you can decide whether the battery benefit is worth the visual or performance change:

- Lower the resolution: the image may look less sharp, but rendering fewer pixels can reduce the work required.
- Choose a less demanding graphics preset: visual detail may decrease.
- Set a lower frame-rate target: motion may feel less smooth, especially in a game where a high frame rate matters to you.
These are practical workload adjustments, not guaranteed runtime gains. The official guidance cited here does not provide a cross-game percentage or extra-hours figure. Keep the highest image quality and frame rate that feel worthwhile for the game you are playing.
Use Windows battery controls during play and downtime
Review app and background use
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage to see which apps use substantial power, including in the background. Where Windows offers the option, restrict background activity for apps you do not need running. Microsoft also recommends closing unnecessary background activity and turning off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when they are not needed. Its guidance is at Tips to save battery power in Windows.

Set sensible idle timers
If you often pause a game and leave the handheld idle, shorten the time before the screen turns off or the device sleeps. Those timers save power when you are not actively playing; they do not improve runtime while a game is running.

- Lower brightness until the screen is still comfortable to use.
- Try a lower refresh rate if your handheld provides the control.
- Select an efficient power mode in Windows or the device maker’s app.
- Adjust one game setting, such as resolution, graphics quality, or frame-rate target, then play and judge the compromise.
- Review background battery use and disable wireless connections you do not need.
Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to tell which adjustment is acceptable for your games and habits. Menu paths can change with software updates; if a control is missing, consult the current guide for your exact handheld.

Settings cannot reverse battery aging
Power-saving changes reduce current consumption, but they do not restore lost battery capacity. Microsoft notes that lithium-ion battery capacity declines over charge and discharge cycles in its battery-care guidance. If a handheld’s unplugged time has fallen substantially as the battery has aged, settings alone cannot bring its original capacity back.
Why there is no universal extra-hours figure
Runtime depends on the handheld model, the game and its workload, display brightness and refresh rate, power mode, and battery condition. A meaningful comparison would need the same game and comparable settings on each device; the official guidance cited here does not provide matched gaming-runtime tests. Treat any precise promise of extra minutes or hours from a particular setting as dependent on the device and workload unless it is backed by a test under those same conditions.
When a portable charger may help
If you need to play away from a wall outlet for longer than the built-in battery permits, a compatible USB-C PD power bank is an alternative to reducing settings further. Check the handheld maker’s charging requirements and the specific model’s compatibility before buying; the guidance here does not establish a wattage, cable, runtime, or airline-eligibility recommendation that applies to every handheld.
