Nintendo Switch 2 vs. PS5: How to Choose a Console for the Games You Play

Choose between Nintendo Switch 2 and PS5 by starting with your must-play games, then weighing portability, PS4/Switch compatibility, performance, storage and local total cost.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the console that runs the games you actually want. Pick Nintendo Switch 2 when Nintendo exclusives, handheld play, or continued access to compatible Switch games is the priority. Pick PlayStation 5 when you want PlayStation exclusives, the broadest PS4 continuity, or demanding games in which the specific version’s image quality and frame rate matter most. For games released on both systems, compare the actual edition, performance, price, storage and where you will play—not the logo on the box.

Start with your must-play games

Before comparing hardware, write down three to five games you would buy or replay first. Include games you already own and games you expect to purchase over the next year. This list is more useful than a generic “which console is better?” ranking because the catalogs overlap in some genres but diverge sharply around first-party releases.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Mark Nintendo-only priorities. If the games at the top of your list are Nintendo releases or experiences designed around Nintendo’s hardware, Switch 2 is the relevant platform to investigate.
  2. Mark PlayStation priorities. If your list centers on PlayStation Studios releases or large, technically demanding productions, start with PS5 versions and their performance modes.
  3. Mark shared games. For each multiplatform title, check the exact Switch 2 and PS5 editions, update history, frame-rate targets, resolution, controls and current price. A console’s general reputation cannot predict every port.
  4. Mark games you already own. Confirm individual Switch compatibility or PS4 support before assuming your library transfers.

Give each game a priority score, such as essential, likely or optional. If one platform has your only essential title, that can outweigh several optional shared games. Also note whether each game is a solo purchase, a multiplayer game, a short-session game or something you expect to play for years. That helps expose hidden requirements such as online service access, extra controllers, a disc drive or enough storage.

Nintendo’s catalog page and Sony’s PS5 materials are useful starting points, but neither platform label guarantees that every game in a series is available in the same form. Treat your personal list as the first filter, then use the sections below to resolve the trade-offs.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

How the libraries differ

Switch 2: Nintendo games plus a qualified Switch library

Switch 2 is the natural choice if Nintendo’s first-party games are the reason you are buying a console. It also extends the Switch ecosystem, but compatibility is not universal. Nintendo says, “In addition to Nintendo Switch 2 games, Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released on the Nintendo Switch system.” The same support page warns that the newer hardware is different and “some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” Read the individual entry in Nintendo’s compatibility lookup before buying a game, accessory or upgrade.

Compatibility can take several forms. A Switch game may run as-is, require an update, receive a free improvement, or offer a paid upgrade. Some games may work with limitations, while others are unsupported. Physical and digital ownership therefore need separate checks: a cartridge does not automatically guarantee full functionality, and a digital purchase does not automatically include a Switch 2 enhancement.

Do not assume that a game’s save data, downloadable content or accessories behave identically on both systems. If a favorite title uses a camera, fitness accessory, special controller or another peripheral, check that item separately in Nintendo’s compatibility information. A console can be compatible with the software while a particular accessory remains limited.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PS5: PlayStation exclusives and extensive PS4 continuity

PS5 is compelling when your list is built around PlayStation Studios releases or when you already own many PS4 games. Sony’s current US PS5 page says more than 8,500 PS4 games are playable on PS5, and that Game Boost improves frame rates in selected PS4 titles. That is a platform-level advantage for an existing PS4 owner, although individual games can still have restrictions or require updates.

Check a game’s store listing and publisher notes for its PS5 version, upgrade terms and save-data behavior. “Playable on PS5” does not always mean a native PS5 edition, a free upgrade or identical features. Those distinctions matter if you are deciding whether to repurchase a game you already own.

Make a separate list of your PS4 discs and digital purchases. A disc-drive PS5 can use compatible discs, but a digital-only model cannot read a collection sitting on a shelf. For digital games, confirm that you are signing into the account that owns them and check whether a separate PS5 edition or upgrade fee applies. This inventory often reveals that the apparently more expensive console is cheaper for an existing owner.

Compatibility questions to answer before buying

Can you play Switch games on Switch 2?

Often, but not automatically in every case. Nintendo’s official list identifies supported physical and digital games and notes known limitations. Some titles need a patch or a paid upgrade to expose Switch 2 features. Accessories can have their own compatibility requirements, so check the hardware entry as well as the game entry. If a favorite title is essential to your decision, verify it by name before purchasing the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the list again if you are buying a bundle or a used copy. The game may be compatible, while a bundled accessory or a particular mode is not fully supported. Keep the distinction between “runs,” “runs with limitations” and “has a Switch 2 update”; those are different ownership experiences.

Can you play PS4 games on PS5?

PS5 supports more than 8,500 PS4 games according to Sony, with Game Boost available for selected titles. Confirm the specific game’s disc or digital entitlement, region and upgrade path. A PS4 disc also requires a PS5 model with a disc drive; a digital-only model cannot read it.

For a digital library, check whether the game appears in your account and whether your saved progress transfers automatically or requires an in-game or cloud process. For discs, verify the exact region and condition before relying on a used purchase. Backward compatibility is broad, but it is still a title-by-title question when a particular game matters.

What if most of your games are shared releases?

Do not decide from a franchise name alone. Look for side-by-side details for the particular game: performance modes, resolution, loading behavior, control support, downloadable content and update cadence. A well-optimized Switch 2 port may be the better fit for someone who plays away from the television, while a PS5 edition may offer a steadier high-performance mode. Without title-specific testing, no universal winner can be stated.

Also compare the player communities and multiplayer requirements shown on each store page. Cross-play, cross-save and downloadable-content entitlements are game-specific; do not infer them from the console brand. If friends already play on one system, that practical compatibility can matter more than a small visual difference.

Portability or performance: the central hardware trade-off

Choose Switch 2 for a second screen

The Switch 2 is a home-and-portable hybrid, so you can continue the same session on a television or in handheld mode. That flexibility has practical value if your gaming time is split between a living room, bedroom, commute or travel. It also changes which games are realistic to play: a short handheld session can be easier to fit into a day than a long session in front of a fixed display.

Portability is not merely a specification. Consider how often you will actually remove the system from its dock, whether other people need the main television, and whether you are comfortable carrying the console and its accessories. If the answer is “rarely,” Switch 2’s hybrid design may not justify choosing a less capable version of a shared game.

Ask where handheld play will happen. Frequent travel, shared television time and short evening sessions give the feature tangible value. Occasional use may not. Include carrying, charging and storing the system in your routine, especially if you expect to move between docked and handheld play often.

Choose PS5 when visual headroom is the priority

The Associated Press describes Switch 2 as a hybrid and notes that it does not match the performance of PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. That does not make every PS5 version better, but it is a useful warning for buyers who prioritize demanding graphics, higher performance targets or fewer visual compromises. Compare the actual modes offered by the game you care about; some titles prioritize resolution, others frame rate, and patches can change the options after launch.

PS5 is also the straightforward choice if you will always play on a television or monitor and have no use for a handheld mode. In that situation, the value of Switch 2’s portability disappears while the performance difference in demanding games remains relevant.

Performance is not one simple number. Check whether a title offers separate quality and performance modes, how stable the stated frame rate is, and whether visual effects or loading are reduced in the Switch 2 edition. A review of a different game, or launch behavior before a major patch, cannot settle your specific purchase.

How to compare a game available on both consoles

Use this six-point checklist for every shared game that appears on your must-play list:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Edition: Is there a native Switch 2 or PS5 release, or are you running the previous-generation version through compatibility?
  2. Performance: Does the developer state a frame-rate target or provide selectable modes? Look for current patch notes rather than launch coverage alone.
  3. Image quality: Check resolution claims and whether visual effects, texture quality or draw distance are reduced on the less powerful version.
  4. Controls: Confirm support for the control scheme you prefer, including motion, local multiplayer or accessories required by that edition.
  5. Play location: Decide whether you will use handheld play often enough to outweigh differences in visuals or performance.
  6. Ownership cost: Compare the current price, upgrade fee, downloadable content and online-service requirements in your region.

Add two practical checks. First, confirm whether your friends use the same version and whether cross-play is supported. Second, check save and expansion behavior before buying a second copy. A lower sticker price can be misleading if your existing edition does not carry over its add-ons or progress.

This approach also prevents a common mistake: buying a game on the platform you intend to purchase and only later discovering that the save transfer, multiplayer pool or expansion entitlement is different.

Storage and physical media

Switch 2 storage

The Associated Press reports 256 GB of internal storage for Switch 2. Expansion requires a microSD Express card, not just any microSD card. Check the card specification and the console’s current compatibility guidance before purchasing; ordinary microSD cards should not be treated as interchangeable. Storage planning matters more if you buy digital games, install large updates or keep several titles available for travel.

Leave room for updates rather than budgeting only for the initial download. If you prefer physical games, remember that patches and additional content can still consume internal or expanded storage. Compare the price of a compatible card locally and include it in the console total instead of treating it as an optional afterthought.

PS5 discs and digital purchases

Choose the PS5 model that matches how you buy games. A disc-drive model can use compatible physical PS5 and PS4 discs, while a digital-only model cannot read discs you already own. Confirm the exact model and bundle in your market because included games, drive configuration and storage can vary.

Sony’s US PS5 page currently carries a notice that newly released PlayStation games will be available in digital format only beginning in January 2028. That is a dated, US-specific statement about future releases; it does not erase discs already released, and it should not be generalized to every region without checking the local policy. If long-term physical ownership is important, verify the rule that applies where you live and distinguish future releases from games already on disc.

That notice is one reason to decide deliberately between disc and digital hardware. Do not pay extra for a drive you will never use, but do not choose digital-only if your current PS4 library is mostly discs. Regional policy and future release practices can change, so confirm the local PlayStation page at checkout.

Price the complete setup, not the launch headline

Nintendo announced a June 5, 2025 Switch 2 release in its April 2, 2025 announcement. The announcement includes regional launch MSRPs, including a Japan-only model. Those figures are historical and market-specific, so they should not be presented as a current US or global price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a current comparison, record the exact local price of each candidate on the day you buy and add the costs that apply to your use:

  • Console model and included game or bundle.
  • Disc drive, if you need one for existing PS4 or PS5 discs.
  • MicroSD Express storage for Switch 2, if internal capacity will not cover your library.
  • Games you will purchase immediately, including any paid next-generation upgrade.
  • Online-service subscription required for the multiplayer features you intend to use.
  • Extra controllers, charging equipment and any game-specific accessories.

A lower console price can disappear once you add a storage card, subscriptions and a first-party game. Conversely, a higher initial price may be cheaper for someone who already owns a compatible disc library or plans to buy used physical games. Compare the same bundle conditions in the same currency and region; do not mix a promotional price with a regular price or a console-only listing.

Use a simple first-year total: console, one or two must-play games, required online service, storage expansion, and any controller or accessory needed for your household. Then calculate the cost of the games you already own that would otherwise need to be repurchased. This makes the decision personal without pretending that one platform has a universally lower price.

Decision paths for common buyers

You want Nintendo exclusives and occasional handheld play

Start with Switch 2. Verify that your existing Switch games and accessories are supported, then budget for a microSD Express card if your purchases will be mostly digital. The hybrid format is doing real work in this scenario, so it should be part of the decision rather than an afterthought.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You already own a large PS4 library

Start with PS5 and check the individual games you care about. Sony’s stated support for more than 8,500 PS4 games and Game Boost for selected titles gives PS5 a strong continuity case. Select a disc-drive model if your collection is on discs.

You play demanding shared games on a television

Start with the PS5 version and inspect its actual performance modes, then compare the Switch 2 port only if portability or a specific Nintendo feature matters. The AP’s performance positioning supports treating PS5 as the safer baseline for visual and frame-rate headroom, not as proof that every port is superior.

You split time between home and travel

Start with Switch 2 if handheld sessions are a regular part of your routine. Use the shared-game checklist for each major purchase, because portability may come with differences in resolution, effects or update support. If you almost never play away from a fixed screen, choose based on exclusives, library continuity and performance instead.

You buy almost everything digitally

Compare storage and account ecosystems first. Switch 2’s reported 256 GB internal storage and microSD Express requirement should be included in the budget. On PS5, check the model’s built-in storage, the price of additional storage and the future physical-media policy in your region before assuming digital is the only factor that matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You share a console with family or roommates

Prioritize the games everyone will actually play, then check local multiplayer controls and accessory needs for those titles. Switch 2 may be more useful when the television is shared because handheld play avoids a screen conflict. PS5 may be the better fit when everyone wants demanding games on one fixed display. Either way, price the additional controllers and subscriptions instead of comparing console boxes alone.

Pitfalls that lead to a bad purchase

  • Assuming every Switch game transfers perfectly: check the compatibility lookup and any required upgrade.
  • Treating PS4 support as a promise of a native PS5 edition: verify upgrade, save and downloadable-content details.
  • Buying the wrong storage card: Switch 2 expansion specifically requires microSD Express.
  • Comparing launch prices with current prices: use local listings, bundles and the date of purchase.
  • Using console reputation as performance evidence: inspect the particular game’s current modes and patches.
  • Choosing digital-only hardware while owning discs: account for the physical collection first.
  • Forgetting recurring costs: include online service, storage and extra controllers in the first-year total.

A final pre-purchase checklist

  • List the three to five games you most want, separating exclusive, shared and already-owned titles.
  • Check each Switch game in Nintendo’s compatibility lookup.
  • Check each PS4 game’s PS5 compatibility, upgrade route and save-data behavior.
  • For shared games, compare the current edition’s performance modes, visuals, controls and updates.
  • Decide whether handheld play will be frequent, occasional or irrelevant.
  • Choose disc or digital hardware according to the games you already own and how you plan to buy future releases.
  • Add storage, online service, controllers and immediate games to the local console price.
  • Recheck bundles, stock and regional policies immediately before checkout.

The right answer is therefore personal but not arbitrary: your must-play games determine the platform, your play location determines whether portability has value, and title-specific compatibility and performance checks settle the close calls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I get a Switch 2 or PS5?

Choose Switch 2 for Nintendo exclusives, regular handheld play or compatible Switch-game access. Choose PS5 for PlayStation exclusives, demanding television-focused games or a large PS4 library. If your list is mostly shared games, compare each version rather than relying on the brand.

Can I play my Switch games on Switch 2?

Compatible physical and digital Switch games can run on Switch 2, but Nintendo warns that some are unsupported or not fully compatible. Check the official compatibility entry for each game and accessory; some titles have free updates or paid upgrades.

Can I play PS4 games on PS5?

Sony says more than 8,500 PS4 games are playable on PS5, with Game Boost improving frame rates in selected titles. Confirm the individual game, upgrade terms and disc requirements. A digital-only PS5 cannot read PS4 discs.

Should I choose portability or better performance?

Choose portability when you will genuinely play away from a fixed television or share the main screen. Favor PS5 when you play on a television and care more about demanding graphics, frame-rate headroom or fewer visual compromises. Check the specific game before deciding.

Is Switch 2 storage expandable with any microSD card?

No. The Associated Press reports that Switch 2 expansion requires a microSD Express card. Verify current compatibility and pricing before buying; a generic microSD card should not be treated as interchangeable.

Should I buy a disc-drive PS5?

Buy the disc-drive model if you own compatible PS4 or PS5 discs, plan to buy used physical games or want that flexibility. A digital-only model cannot read discs. Compare the exact local model and bundle.

How should I compare a game released on both systems?

Check whether each version is native, its current frame-rate and resolution modes, visual compromises, controls, loading, updates, multiplayer compatibility, downloadable content and total price. Also check save transfer and upgrade rules.

Do launch prices still tell me which console is cheaper?

No. Nintendo’s June 5, 2025 launch announcement and regional MSRPs are historical context. Compare current local prices, bundles, included games, storage, subscriptions, controllers and any disc drive in the market where you will buy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy Switch 2 for Nintendo games and meaningful handheld use; buy PS5 for PlayStation exclusives, broad PS4 continuity and demanding fixed-screen play. For every shared title, verify the exact version, compatibility, performance and total local cost before checkout.
