What can an upgrade pack add?
Nintendo’s general description includes visual improvements, new features, or additional game modes. Individual listings show how different those changes can be:

- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: Nintendo lists smoother frame rates, faster loading, enhanced resolution and textures, two separate manual save files, and a game-specific Nintendo Switch App service. Nintendo Support’s Tears of the Kingdom upgrade-pack page also lists the US price and membership option.
- Card-en-Ciel: its listing describes increased frame rates, a 4K resolution mode, and mouse support.
- Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter: the listing describes higher resolutions, improved textures, and improved frame rates, and explicitly says the game content does not change.
- Simogo Legacy Collection: its listing describes mouse controls and title-specific performance and resolution modes.
- Xenoblade Chronicles 3: the listing describes new game content and features, and says the full game is required to use the pack. It lists a December 3, 2026 release date, which is upcoming as of October 4, 2026; that is a listed future release, not evidence that the pack is already available. These examples are not a complete catalogue. Check the individual game’s listing for its exact features and whether it changes gameplay content or only adds technical and control enhancements.
How to get a pack, depending on whether you own the game
If you already own the original Switch game
Look up that title’s upgrade pack in Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store, or use a retailer download code if one is offered. You need the original game as well as the add-on. Nintendo’s product listing for Xenoblade Chronicles 3, for example, explicitly says the full game is required to use its upgrade pack.

If you do not own the game
Look for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition bundle, which combines the original game and its upgrade pack. Nintendo UK describes physical and digital formats, but availability should be checked for the specific title and market; a physical edition is not established for every title or region. The Switch 2 Edition bundle and a standalone upgrade pack are different purchases: the latter does not replace the base game.
Can Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack include an upgrade?
Yes, but only for selected packs. Nintendo specifically names the The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs as Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack benefits. You must have an active membership and own the corresponding original game, physically or digitally. This does not mean the membership includes every upgrade pack. What does a pack cost?
Nintendo Support lists the Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack at $9.99 USD in its US support context; the same page says active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can download it at no additional cost. This is a price for that specific pack in the US, not a standard price for all upgrade packs or regions. Check the relevant regional store listing for a title’s current price.
What to check before choosing an upgrade
- Confirm you have the base game. A standalone upgrade pack supplements the original Switch game; it does not include it.
- Read the title’s feature list. Check whether it offers technical improvements, controls, modes, or new game content.
- Compare the pack and bundle. If you do not own the game, see whether a Switch 2 Edition bundle is offered in your market and in the format you want.
- Check the local price and availability. Listings, prices, and retailer codes can vary by title and region.
- Check membership eligibility. Confirm that the particular pack is included, that your Expansion Pack membership is active, and that you own the original game.
Which console plays the upgrade features?
Nintendo says Switch 2 Edition features and content can only be played on Nintendo Switch 2. The original Nintendo Switch game remains playable on Nintendo Switch, but the pack’s enhancements are not available there.
