Nintendo Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, but some is reserved for system use. Games vary in size, and expandable storage works only with microSD Express cards—not the standard microSD cards used with the original Switch. A card is optional for playing games, but useful if you want to keep more downloads and captures on the console.

How much storage does Nintendo Switch 2 have?

The console has 256 GB of internal storage. Nintendo reserves some of that for system use, and does not state the exact amount available to users, so do not treat the full 256 GB as space for game installs. Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ explains the storage distinction.

How much space do Switch 2 games need?

There is no single game-size requirement: Nintendo says storage needs vary by title and advises checking the game’s packaging or current eShop listing. These official listings illustrate the range, but apply to the named edition and region rather than establishing a universal install size.

Game Listed size Listing context
Donkey Kong Bananza 9 GB Nintendo US product page; Nintendo UK lists 9.0 GB. Nintendo US listing
Mario Kart World 22.2 GB Nintendo Australia eShop listing. Nintendo Australia listing
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition 24.1 GB Nintendo Canada product page. Nintendo Canada listing

These figures are listing sizes, not guarantees of the final space a game will use after updates or additional content. Regional listings may differ in rounding, timing, or edition details. For a specific title, check its current store listing or packaging; Nintendo’s download-space guidance directs users to those sources.

#1 Best Overall
Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Which microSD cards work with Switch 2?

Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards for expanded storage, with capacity support up to 2 TB. A standard microSD card—including one used with the original Switch—cannot store or load Switch 2 games. Nintendo says the Express standard provides the faster access speeds needed for games to run smoothly. See the microSD Express Card FAQ for compatibility details.

The console does not include a card; it is sold separately. When you insert one, downloaded software is saved to the card by default, and you can transfer downloadable software between the card and system memory. Nintendo recommends using one card: software spread across multiple cards cannot be combined just by inserting them together. Its documented upgrade approach is to copy the data to a larger card.

  • DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].

Is extra storage required, and what can the card hold?

Nintendo Support’s current Data Management FAQ says, “At this time, there are not individual games that require additional storage space to play.” That is Nintendo’s statement at the time of its FAQ, not a promise about future releases. Expansion is optional and depends on how many downloads and captures you want to keep on the console.

  • A microSD Express card can hold downloaded software, updates, downloadable content, screenshots, and captured videos.
  • Game save data stays in the console’s system memory, not on the card. This remains true when you play from a game card or microSD Express card.
  • Deleting downloaded software does not delete its save data, according to Nintendo.

Does a physical Switch 2 game avoid a large download?

Not necessarily. A Game-Key Card acts as a key to download the full game data; the card itself does not contain the full game. Check the packaging or product details if the size of the required download matters to you. Nintendo explains the format in its Switch 2 online-safety and Game-Key Card information.

How to decide whether to buy a card

  1. Check the titles you want to install. Use each game’s current eShop listing or packaging rather than assuming all games need a similar amount of space.
  2. Consider what you keep on the console. If you expect to maintain a large digital library or save many captures locally, additional capacity may be convenient.
  3. Choose the correct standard. Buy a microSD Express card, not a standard microSD card intended for the original Switch. Nintendo supports capacities up to 2 TB.
  4. Plan around one card. If you later upgrade, use Nintendo’s documented copy-to-a-larger-card approach rather than expecting separate cards to merge automatically.
