Before your first game, check for system updates, then tune the display, sleep, battery, controls, family restrictions and storage to suit how you use the console. There is no single best setup: several options depend on your TV or monitor, play habits and accessibility needs.
1. Check for system updates
Start in System Settings and look for system software and dock updates. Nintendo’s settings overview lists controls for both; it does not specify a particular current software version. Updating first helps ensure you are configuring the system with the software available to your console.

2. Set up the display for handheld and TV play
TV resolution: begin with Automatic
In System Settings, open Display and leave TV Resolution on Automatic to start. Nintendo lists 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 2160p (4K) as manual choices. The resolution you can use depends on the connected display and software, so a higher selection is not automatically better.
Check what the dock is outputting
Use Dock Output Information in Display to check the current output resolution, refresh rate and HDR status. If the picture is not as expected, compare that information with the capabilities of your TV or monitor before changing settings.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
HDR, refresh rate and TV matching
HDR can be set for all software or only compatible software, and the console offers image adjustment options. Refresh-rate and ALLM choices likewise depend on the display and software. Nintendo also provides RGB range, screen sizing and TV power-matching settings. Check your display’s documentation for supported color settings, and avoid assuming that HDR or 120 Hz will improve every game or setup.
Handheld brightness
Choose manual brightness or auto-brightness in Display according to your comfort and surroundings. There is no universal brightness level: lower brightness may suit a dim room, while a brighter setting can be easier to see in a bright space. You can also change brightness quickly while playing.
3. Choose sleep settings for how you play
System Settings offers separate auto-sleep intervals for handheld/tabletop play and TV mode. Choose shorter or longer intervals based on whether you often pause, step away or leave a game running.

If you want downloads initiated from a PC or smart device to start while the console sleeps, consider enabling the wired-connection sleep option; it requires a wired connection. Nintendo says switching it off can reduce energy use while the console is asleep and connected to the internet. Pick the trade-off that fits your routine.
4. Make battery behavior easier to monitor
In System Settings, you can enable battery percentage on the HOME Menu. You can also choose to stop charging at around 80–90%; Nintendo describes this as a way to help reduce battery-capacity loss over time, not as a guaranteed battery-life result. Consider whether that trade-off suits how often you play away from a charger.
5. Review controls and accessibility options
Do not change every control setting by default. Review the options that address a real preference or need:

Parental controls are divided among the console, the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart-device app and Nintendo Account settings. Many restrictions are system-wide, so set age-rating and communication limits with the youngest user in mind.
- Console settings: configure system-wide restrictions that apply on the console.
- Smart-device app: manage play-time limits and GameChat controls. Children under 16 need the app to use GameChat.
- Nintendo Account settings: manage eShop viewing and purchasing restrictions.
7. Check storage and microSD Express use
Open System Settings > Data Management to see System Memory and microSD Express card use. You can move downloaded software data between them. If you need more room for downloads, look for a compatible microSD Express card; a generic microSD card is not an equivalent format for this purpose.
