Choose the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller for a conventional one-piece gamepad, remappable rear buttons, a headphone jack or longer stated battery life. Choose Joy-Con 2 when you want to play in handheld mode, share controllers for local multiplayer, or use mouse controls in a compatible game. Switch 2 includes a left and right Joy-Con 2, so the Pro Controller is an optional purchase; an extra Joy-Con 2 pair is mainly for another player or as a replacement.
Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller vs Joy-Con 2: which should you use?
| What matters to you | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A single, traditional controller | Pro Controller | Its full-size, one-piece design is made for separate play rather than attaching to the console. |
| Handheld play | Joy-Con 2 | The pair attaches to Switch 2 for handheld use. |
| Mouse input | Joy-Con 2 | Its mouse controls work in compatible games and can navigate the HOME Menu and some applications. |
| Rear buttons, headphone connection or longer stated battery life | Pro Controller | It has mappable GL/GR buttons, a CTIA-standard 3.5 mm audio jack and Nintendo’s higher estimated battery figure. |
| Flexible tabletop multiplayer | Joy-Con 2 | They can be used wirelessly together or individually, depending on the game and supported play style. |
Both options support motion controls and HD rumble 2. The practical difference is how you want to hold and use the controller, and whether the game supports the input you want. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Pro Controller listing and Switch 2 accessories page describe their features.

What each controller is best at
Pro Controller: a full-size pad for separate play
The Pro Controller is a single-piece controller for playing away from the console. In addition to motion controls and HD rumble 2, Nintendo lists built-in amiibo functionality, Capture and C buttons, mappable GL/GR rear buttons and a 3.5 mm CTIA-standard audio jack. The rear buttons can be mapped to other inputs, which may be useful if you want extra controls without changing how you hold the pad.
Its audio jack is a specific convenience: Nintendo documents a wired headphone connection on the Pro Controller. Do not assume that feature is available on Joy-Con 2; it is not listed in Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 specifications. See Nintendo’s Pro Controller product listing for its feature set.

Joy-Con 2: handheld, shared and mouse-control flexibility
Joy-Con 2 attaches to Switch 2 for handheld play. Detached, the controllers can be used wirelessly for tabletop play together or individually when supported by the software and play style. That makes the included pair useful for games that allow two people to share one controller each, though the game determines how many controllers and players it supports.
Joy-Con 2 also has mouse controls in compatible games, and Nintendo says those controls can navigate the HOME Menu and some applications. Check that a game actually supports mouse input before choosing Joy-Con 2 for that feature. Nintendo recommends using the mouse sensor on a flat surface; responsiveness may vary by surface, and some games may require the strap. Its Joy-Con 2 FAQ explains supported use and mouse-control caveats.

Battery life and charging: Nintendo’s estimates
| Controller | Estimated battery life | Estimated charge time |
|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 Pro Controller | Approximately 40 hours | Approximately 3 hours |
| Joy-Con 2 | Up to 20 hours | Approximately 3.5 hours |
These are Nintendo’s published estimates, not independent head-to-head test results. Actual battery life varies with use. The figures come from Nintendo’s Pro Controller FAQ, Joy-Con 2 FAQ and Switch 2 specifications.
If you want to charge detached Joy-Con 2 while holding them in a classic-style configuration, Nintendo sells a Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip separately. The grip does not include controllers. The console package includes two Joy-Con 2 straps, so the basic straps are not an extra purchase.

Compatibility: Switch 2 controllers and original Switch accessories
The Switch 2 Pro Controller and Joy-Con 2 are for use with Switch 2 only. The original Switch Pro Controller and original Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, subject to game and feature compatibility. Original Joy-Con cannot attach to the Switch 2 console, and original Joy-Con accessories—including grips, straps, wheels and charging accessories—are not interchangeable with Joy-Con 2. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance details the cross-generation limits.

- Pick the Pro Controller if you mainly play with a separate controller and want its one-piece layout, mappable GL/GR buttons, headphone jack or longer Nintendo-estimated battery interval.
- Use the included Joy-Con 2 if handheld play, tabletop flexibility or supported mouse controls matter most.
- Consider an extra Joy-Con 2 pair if you need another pair for local multiplayer or a replacement; Switch 2 already comes with one pair.
- Check the games first if you are choosing Joy-Con 2 for mouse controls or individual-controller play, since support depends on the game.
Comfort is personal, and these specifications do not establish that one controller is more comfortable for everyone. Choose based on the games you play and the way you want to use the system.
