How much did U.S. hardware sales fall?
Units sold
U.S. video game hardware sales totaled 559,000 units in August 2026, a 15% year-over-year decline. Circana figures reported by GamingBolt put the August 2013 comparison at 423,000 units, making August 2026 the lowest August total since then. This comparison applies to Augusts; it does not mean sales were at a low across all months.

These are market-wide spending and average-price figures, not the price of any one console. The figures were attributed to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella in GamingBolt’s report.

The unit changes refer to the hardware platform comparisons reported for August; the dollar figures for Nintendo and Xbox refer specifically to spending on Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S, respectively. The differences show why a sales ranking by dollars is not interchangeable with a ranking by units. These comparisons were attributed to Circana in GamingBolt’s August coverage.

What explains the August decline?
The reported totals establish that unit sales fell, but they do not establish one cause. Circana comments about hardware prices, components, and comparisons with Switch 2’s launch concerned July market context. Those observations do not, on their own, demonstrate why August sales changed. The available August coverage reports the outcome and platform-level comparisons rather than a causal breakdown.

How to interpret the result
- Switch 2 led the U.S. market in both units and dollars for August and for the year to date through August.
- The overall decline is a year-over-year change in U.S. hardware units, while the historical comparison is limited to August totals.
- The record $541 average price paid is a market-wide August average, not a listed price or recommended purchase price for an individual console.
- The reported figures are Circana data reproduced by news coverage. Circana’s public video-games page describes its market reporting as point-of-sale data, but its available report in this period covered July, not August: Circana’s video games reporting page.
