The figures measure different things: a console can lead its category while the category as a whole contracts.
Is the Switch 2 the best-selling console in 2026?
Yes, in the U.S. rankings reported for August 2026: Circana data reported by Final Weapon placed Nintendo Switch 2 first by both unit sales and dollar sales for August and year to date through August. That is a ranking among consoles, not evidence that the overall hardware market grew.

The market-level spending figures moved in the opposite direction. U.S. video game hardware spending was $302 million in August, down 3% from August 2025, and $2.5 billion year to date through August, down 11% year over year. Hardware unit sales for August were reported at 559,000, down 15% year over year.

Why is video game hardware spending down?
The available figures show falling unit sales and lower total spending in August, alongside a higher average price per hardware unit. Circana’s August average hardware price was reported at $541, compared with the previous August record of $476 in 2025. Because spending reflects both the number of units sold and their prices, a higher average price does not by itself prevent total spending from declining when fewer systems are sold.
Price is also an affordability issue, but the available reporting does not establish it as the sole cause of the market decline. In Nintendo’s May 11, 2026 results Q&A, president and representative director Shuntaro Furukawa said the company recognized that its hardware price revision “raises the barrier for entry to a certain extent for people deciding whether to make a purchase.” Nintendo discussed rising memory and component costs and other market conditions in connection with the revision. That statement addresses Nintendo’s pricing; it does not explain the full U.S. market result.

Are game sales doing better than console sales?
The figures available here do not establish that. They show a year-to-date decline in U.S. hardware spending, but no substantiated August 2026 U.S. content-spending total or year-over-year growth rate. Hardware and game-content spending are separate categories, so the hardware decline cannot be used to infer how games performed.
Circana’s February 11, 2026 forecast put total U.S. consumer spending on video game hardware, content, and accessories at a projected $62.8 billion for 2026, up 3% from $60.7 billion in 2025. That is a forecast for all three categories, not a measured August result or proof that content spending was growing faster than hardware.

How many Switch 2 systems has Nintendo sold?
Nintendo reported 19.86 million Switch 2 hardware units sold in its fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. The company also reported 48.71 million Switch 2 software units for that fiscal year. These are Nintendo’s sell-in figures: the company defines sell-in as sales by the Nintendo group to outside entities, including partner sales and direct website sales. They are not equivalent to Circana’s U.S. monthly market-tracking figures, which cover a different geography and measure.
Nintendo’s FY2026 disclosure also reported digital sales of 407.6 billion yen, up 25.0% year over year, and said digital represented 54.6% of dedicated-platform software sales. Nintendo’s digital-sales category includes downloadable packaged games, download-only software, add-on content, Nintendo Switch Online, and related items. Revenue from software bundled with hardware is classified as hardware revenue. These company-wide fiscal-year disclosures provide context about Nintendo’s business, not a direct measure of U.S. game spending in August.
What explains the Switch 2’s sales lead?
The rankings establish that Switch 2 led the reported U.S. console market; they do not isolate a single cause. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in the company’s published English translation of its May 11, 2026 Q&A: “The availability of software that people want to play is a key factor supporting the transition to Nintendo Switch 2.” Nintendo’s full-year software-unit total is consistent with a substantial software business, but it cannot by itself show what drove the monthly U.S. ranking.
