If your Switch 2 recognizes a game card but its update will not download, treat it first as a download problem—not a cartridge-reading failure. Test the internet connection, check whether another game is pausing downloads, start the update manually, and then inspect available storage and card compatibility. The progress bar alone cannot identify the cause.
1. Test the Switch 2 internet connection
On the console, open System Settings > Internet > Test Connection. Note whether the test succeeds, its error code if it fails, and the reported download and upload speeds. A failed test gives you a specific code to look up in Nintendo’s connection support; do not guess at the cause from the update screen.

- Move the console within 10 feet of the wireless router while testing, as Nintendo recommends for a strong signal.
- If the connection is slow or unreliable, try another Wi-Fi band if your router offers one, and power cycle the modem and router.
- For comparison, you can connect the dock to a wired network or connect the console to another Wi-Fi network. Switch 2 must be docked for a wired connection. These are diagnostic tests: a wired result can help distinguish a Wi-Fi issue, but does not guarantee that the update will download.
2. Check whether a running game has paused the download
Some games pause downloads while they are being played. Save your progress and close running software before deciding the update is stuck.
- Press HOME and close the game or application that is running.
- From the HOME Menu, open your user page.
- Select User Settings > Update Download Progress.
- Let the console connect online and check whether the update resumes.
Nintendo’s stalled-download guidance recommends this check when a download is stuck or will not progress.

3. Start the game update manually
Nintendo Support says that when an update is available and the console is online, you will be prompted to download it when you start the game or application. If no prompt appears, initiate the update from HOME:
- Connect the Switch 2 to the internet.
- On HOME, highlight the game. Do not open it.
- Press + or −.
- Select Software Update > Via the Internet.
Automatic updating can be enabled at System Settings > System > Software Auto-Updates. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 software update instructions for the official steps.
4. Check free space and the memory card type
Game update storage requirements vary. Check the game’s physical packaging or its eShop listing, then compare that requirement with the console’s available space. If there is not enough room, free space in the storage you are using or consider a compatible microSD Express card.

Switch 2 requires microSD Express
Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards only. An ordinary microSD card used with the original Switch is not compatible unless it meets the Express standard. Compatible microSD Express cards can store downloadable software, update data, and DLC; game save data remains in the console’s system memory. Nintendo lists support for cards up to 2 TB in its microSD Express Card FAQ.
If you see a storage error, first confirm that the card is microSD Express and that there is enough free space. Avoid formatting as a routine first step: formatting deletes the card’s data, which cannot be recovered. Back up screenshots and videos before any format. Nintendo’s not-enough-space guidance also explains where to check storage and how to address insufficient room.

Error 2005-0003
Nintendo advises not to remove an inserted microSD or microSD Express card until downloads have completed. Its 2005-0003 instructions include updating the system, restarting the console, checking card compatibility and reinserting the card, and trying another compatible card if needed. Formatting is among the possible later steps; back up card data first because it will be erased.

Error 2002-5110
Nintendo’s 2002-5110 guidance depends on whether a memory card is in use. With a card, the steps include updating the system, checking for corrupted data, redownloading the software, and testing a different storage option—including system memory. Without a card, update the system, check for corrupted data, and redownload; if the error remains, Nintendo says the console may need service.

6. If the game card itself is not recognized
If the Switch 2 does not recognize the cartridge at all, that is different from a recognized game whose update is failing. Use Nintendo’s game-card read troubleshooting. Its guidance distinguishes trouble with one game card from trouble reading several: multiple unreadable cards may require service, while an issue limited to one card has separate checks. If a game is suspended, close it or power off the console before removing its card.
