Apply gun grease only at the lubrication points named in the owner’s manual for your exact firearm, and use only the small amount it specifies. There is no universal grease map: a manual may call for grease at one contact point and prohibit lubricant on another part. Before maintenance, make the firearm safe using that model’s manual procedure.
Make the firearm safe before maintenance
Follow the safety procedure in the manual for your exact model. For example, the Springfield Armory Echelon manual directs users to point the firearm in a safe direction, remove the magazine, separate cartridges from the firearm, and check that the chamber and magazine well are empty. Keep ammunition away from the work area while cleaning or lubricating.

Find the lubrication points in your exact manual
- Identify the make and model. Do not rely on a generic diagram or instructions for a similar-looking firearm.
- Read the current owner’s manual. Find its lubrication section or diagram and note both the permitted locations and amount. GLOCK, for example, directs owners to the manual for their specific model’s lubrication points and quantities (GLOCK care and maintenance).
- Confirm grease is specified at the target point. If the manual calls for oil, dry operation, or no lubricant at a part, do not substitute grease.
The examples below illustrate why instructions cannot be transferred from one firearm to another:

| Manual example | What it specifies | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|
| SIG50 manual excerpt, section 8.5, hosted by ManyManuals | A light film behind the bolt locking lugs; it also warns not to over-grease and to keep grease out of the trigger. | This is not a universal bolt or trigger instruction. The excerpt is hosted by a third party, so check the current official manual for the firearm before relying on it. |
| Ruger LC Carbine manual | A small amount of grease in the hammer-toggle pocket; it describes using a small stick or pipe cleaner to reach that pocket. | Do not apply grease to another firearm’s pocket or mechanism based on this example. |
| Springfield Armory Echelon manual | It explicitly says not to apply oil or grease to the striker. | Do not treat the striker as a general-purpose lubrication point. |
Apply only a controlled, small amount
Clean the specified part as the manual directs. Then apply firearm-suitable grease only where the manual calls for it, using its wording for quantity. A “light film” or “small amount” is not a direction to coat nearby surfaces. Avoid inventing a number of drops, a bead size, or a routine interval when the manual does not provide one.
#1 Best Overall
- USED BY U.S. SPECIAL FORCES WORLDWIDE: TW25B is uniquely engineered, made in America and is used by U.S. Special Forces.
- SUPER LUBRICATION and PROTECTION: Preferred lubricant on heavy weaponry, AR's, all firearms, shotguns and handguns while protecting wear parts and bore.
- OPTIMIZED FOR PERFORMANCE and REDUCED MAINTENANCE: Ensures firing reliability in extreme temperature conditions ( -90°F (-67°C) to +450°F (232°C) and is the most durable extreme performance lubricant available.
- LOWEST COST GUN LUBE PER APPLICATION: Our product is the longest lasting gun lubricant on the market. Live-fire trials and laboratory testing have shown TW25B enables firing of 6 to 10 times more rounds between cleanings while using a fraction of our lubricant when compared to other products.
- USED: With complete safety worldwide since 1987
A precision applicator can help control placement, but use one only if it is appropriate for the manual’s instructions. Ruger’s small-stick or pipe-cleaner example applies to the named LC Carbine pocket, not to every firearm. Product descriptions, including Lubriplate’s information about SFL Gun Grease for selected firearm parts, do not establish that a grease is suitable for every model (Lubriplate SFL Gun Grease).
Keep grease away from prohibited areas and remove excess
Respect every “do not lubricate” instruction. The Echelon manual says, “DO NOT APPLY OIL OR GREASE TO STRIKER.” The SIG50 excerpt warns that grease entering the trigger may create an unsafe condition. These are model-specific examples, but they show why it is important to check the manual rather than spread grease across nearby parts.

Excess lubricant can affect function. Ruger warns that accumulated oil can attract dust and dirt and may congeal in cold weather, interfering with safe and reliable operation; GLOCK likewise warns that too much lubrication can affect pistol performance. Wipe away grease that is not called for at the designated point, and follow the manual’s inspection and function-check instructions.

Storage instructions can change what to do before the firearm is used again. The SIG50 excerpt says to remove excess lubrication before reuse after storage and to thoroughly clean and wipe the chamber and bore dry. Treat that as SIG50-specific guidance, not as a rule for every firearm; use the directions in your own model’s current manual.
