If a Nintendo Switch 2 download is stuck, first confirm the console is online, close any running game or software, then use User Settings → Update Download Progress. If it is progressing but slowly, test the console’s connection before changing your Wi-Fi setup. Check available storage separately: more storage can make room for a download, but it cannot make the network faster.
First, tell a paused download from a slow one
A download that is not advancing may be paused rather than broken. Nintendo Support says some games and software pause downloads while they are being played, generally to preserve the experience when using a game’s online features and services. Save your game, close the software, and then refresh download progress.

- Confirm the console is connected to the internet. If a connection test shows an error code, follow Nintendo’s instructions for that specific code.
- Save and close any running game or software.
- From the HOME Menu, select your user page, open User Settings, and choose Update Download Progress.
- If progress still does not resume, restart the console. Let it reconnect to the internet, then check progress again before launching software that might pause downloads.
If the download is advancing, even slowly, move to the connection checks below instead of repeatedly refreshing it.
Check the Switch 2 connection speed
On the console, open System Settings → Internet → Test Connection. Note the download and upload speeds shown. Nintendo’s troubleshooting guide gives 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload as reference comparison values; the page does not state a year. These are troubleshooting references, not a promised Switch 2 speed or a way to calculate how long a particular game will take.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Compare the console’s result with another device on the same network. If both are slow, the issue is more likely to involve the internet service or home network than the console alone. Nintendo lists slow ISP service, unresponsive network equipment, weak or interfered wireless signal, and heavy bandwidth use by other devices among common causes of slow downloads.
Improve a slow Wi-Fi connection
Try these changes one at a time, then run the console’s connection test again so you can see whether the result changes.

- NEXT GEN GAMING: Works with Nintendo Switch 2.
- READY FOR TOMORROW. Ready for future products with a PCIe-NVMe interface; performs at UHS-I speeds with microSD UHS-I and UHS-II devices.
- EXPONENTIALLY FASTER PERFORMANCE. Up to 4.4 times faster transfer speeds than our fastest microSD UHS-I cards [9]. Transfer a 2-hour HD movie in less than 3.5 seconds [1]; save up to 2.8 minutes transferring 60 minutes of 4K UHD video [4] shot at 30 fps when paired with the SanDisk PRO-READER SD Express Dual Card (sold separately) [9]
- DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].
- HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.
- Move closer to the router: Nintendo recommends testing within roughly 10–15 feet of it.
- Reduce interference: Move metal objects and electronics that may interfere with the wireless signal away from the console or router.
- Try another Wi-Fi band: If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, connect using the other available band and compare the test result.
- Create a fresh connection: Set up the internet connection again on the console and retest.
- Restart the network equipment: Power-cycle the modem and router, then allow them to reconnect before testing the Switch 2.
If other devices are using substantial bandwidth, pause their large downloads or streaming temporarily and retest. If the console remains slow while other devices perform normally, focus on the console’s Wi-Fi connection and the router’s settings.

A wired test can help separate a wireless-signal problem from a broader internet or service issue. For wired internet, Nintendo requires the Switch 2 to be in its dock, with a LAN cable running from the dock to the router. You can still configure wireless internet for use when the console is undocked.

Retest under similar network conditions and compare the console’s displayed speeds. If an existing wired connection is slow, Nintendo suggests trying a different Ethernet cable as a diagnostic. Its guidance also includes power-cycling network equipment and, for troubleshooting, connecting directly to the modem. Contact the router maker for advice about firmware or a factory reset before changing advanced router settings.

A download can fail to fit even when the internet connection works. Check the game’s stated capacity and the free space shown for the console’s system storage or microSD Express card. Update data may require additional room, so having space close to the game’s listed size may not be sufficient.
A compatible microSD Express card can expand storage when there is not enough room. It does not increase network bandwidth or fix a slow connection. Nintendo notes that large software downloads can take time depending on the internet environment; its Japanese download information does not provide a universal download-time estimate.
Quick Recap
When to contact your ISP or Nintendo
- If the Switch 2 connection test displays an error code, use Nintendo’s support guidance for that exact code.
- If speeds are low across multiple devices on the same network, contact your ISP or network administrator, especially if the service is consistently below the speed in your plan.
- If other devices work normally but the Switch 2 continues to fail after these checks, contact Nintendo Support with the console’s test results and any error code.
- If general troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, check Nintendo’s current maintenance information before concluding that the console has a fault.
