Choose between Fortinet FortiGate and Cisco Secure Firewall—often still called Firepower—by comparing the exact configurations you would deploy, not brand names or headline throughput figures. Match the inspection features, real traffic load, interfaces, redundancy, management, subscriptions, support term, software compatibility, and your team’s operating experience. The available vendor documentation does not establish a universal winner or a like-for-like performance ranking.

Start with the network you need to protect

Write down the requirements for the actual deployment before comparing appliance models. Include peak and expected growth in traffic, the security services that must inspect that traffic, VPN demand, interface speeds and counts, high-availability design, and how the team will manage policy changes. Fortinet’s NGFW ordering guide treats security requirements, throughput, connectivity, and redundancy as selection considerations. Cisco’s Network Security Ordering Guide covers Secure Firewall appliance families and configurations.

Use the same traffic mix and feature set to assess both vendors. A firewall-only throughput figure is not a substitute for performance with threat inspection, SSL inspection, logging, VPN, and the intended deployment topology enabled. Ask each vendor or integrator for figures tied to your proposed configuration, and validate them with a proof of concept where practical.

Compare capacity using equivalent measures

Fortinet publishes model-specific firewall, threat-protection, and SSL-inspection figures. For example, its NGFW ordering guide lists the following vendor figures for two models:

Model Firewall throughput Threat-protection throughput SSL-inspection throughput
FortiGate 30G 4 Gbps (1518-byte measure) 500 Mbps 400 Mbps
FortiGate 50G 5 Gbps (1518-byte measure) 1.1 Gbps 1.3 Gbps

These are Fortinet’s model-specific figures in its ordering guide, not independent results or a direct comparison with Cisco hardware. Verify current datasheets, definitions, and feature assumptions before using them for procurement. Cisco figures should be compared only when the tested features, traffic conditions, packet sizes, and other assumptions align.

Fortinet’s guide places the 30G and 50G in small retail, home-office, and branch contexts; it also groups the 70G, 90G, 120G, and 200G in larger branch/SMB or 10G uplink/downlink categories. Treat those groupings as a shortlist, not a final recommendation: confirm current availability in your region, lifecycle status, supported features, and capacity under your workload.

Check ports, VPN, and resilience—not throughput alone

Compare the proposed devices’ port types and counts, uplink speeds, WAN and LAN needs, and room for growth. Then check whether the design needs redundant power, device failover, or particular VPN tunnel capacity. Fortinet explicitly flags WAN, power, IPsec VPN tunnels, and device redundancy in its ordering guide. For Cisco, confirm the precise appliance configuration and software support for the planned topology in the ordering guide and relevant compatibility documentation.

Clarify Cisco software and management choices

“Firepower” is a common name for Cisco’s firewall line, while current Cisco documentation uses Secure Firewall terminology. An appliance name by itself does not tell you which software image or management arrangement is included. Cisco documents supported appliance families with either Secure Firewall Threat Defense (FTD) or ASA images; confirm the specific model, software release, and bill of materials.

  • COMPACT AND EFFECTIVE: Provides a powerful, yet compact security solution that effectively protects against a wide range of cyber threats.

For FTD, the management choice may include local Firewall Device Manager (FDM) or centralized Firewall Management Center (FMC), subject to hardware and release compatibility. Check Cisco’s FTD compatibility guide and Management Center compatibility guide for the exact combinations you plan to use.

Match security services and subscriptions

Price the features required for the intended deployment, rather than assuming the appliance purchase includes every security capability. Cisco’s licensing material describes categories including Essentials, IPS, Malware Defense, URL Filtering, and Cisco Secure Client; requirements depend on software and enabled capabilities. Cisco’s guidance states: “It is essential to understand that the license type depends on the software components, not the hardware.” Check the current Cisco license overview and Smart Licensing guidance against the software release and purchase configuration.

Evaluate management and operational fit

Fortinet positions FortiManager as a centralized option for policy, provisioning, automation, and device management across FortiGate and related Fortinet infrastructure. It is a management option to include in the design and budget, not a requirement for every FortiGate installation. Its official FortiManager product information and data sheet describe appliance, virtual, and cloud forms.

Best Value

Compare the management workflow you would actually operate: policy review and deployment, role-based access, backups, logging, and how administrators investigate and respond to events. Existing tools and team familiarity can affect migration effort and day-to-day risk. Include training and the work of translating policies, objects, and procedures when estimating the cost of changing platforms.

Use a like-for-like procurement checklist

  1. Define the workload: Record expected and peak traffic, growth, security services, VPN use, packet and application mix, logging, and high-availability requirements.
  2. Shortlist hardware: Match port speeds and counts, redundancy, and expected workload to proposed FortiGate or Cisco models. Treat vendor performance figures as useful only with their measurement definitions and feature assumptions attached.
  3. Specify software and management: For Cisco, name the FTD or ASA image and FDM or FMC arrangement where applicable. For Fortinet, state the FortiOS and whether FortiManager or another management approach is part of the design.
  4. Confirm compatibility and lifecycle: Check exact model, release, and management combinations in Cisco’s FTD compatibility guide and Management Center compatibility guide. Confirm current FortiGate model and service support with Fortinet for the proposed deployment.
  5. Request complete quotes: Include appliance, security subscriptions, support, management infrastructure or service, renewals, and migration work over the intended term. Compare equivalent features and terms, not just initial hardware cost.
  6. Test the finalists: Ask for a demonstration or proof of concept using the same traffic mix, inspection features, packet sizes, VPN, HA, logging, and management assumptions on both sides.

Which platform should you choose?

Choose the configuration that meets your measured capacity and resilience needs, supports the required features and lifecycle, and can be operated reliably by your team at an acceptable multi-year cost. Existing Fortinet or Cisco tools and staff skills may make one path simpler, but they do not replace a matched technical and commercial evaluation. Neither the Fortinet nor Cisco primary documentation cited here supplies a universal winner or a like-for-like performance/value ranking.
