Not every Nintendo Switch 2 physical game card contains the full game. Some releases use a regular game card; others use a game-key card that downloads the game data to the console or a compatible microSD Express card. Check the individual game’s packaging or Nintendo Store/eShop listing to see which format it uses, how much free space its download needs, and whether an internet connection is required.
What is a game-key card?
A game-key card is a physical card that acts as the key to download and launch a game; it does not contain the full game data. Nintendo Switch 2 releases also include regular game cards, so a physical release does not automatically mean that the game must be downloaded. Check the specific release before buying.

For a game-key-card release, the full game data downloads to the console’s storage or a microSD Express card. The card remains necessary to play: downloading the game does not turn it into a card-free digital copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do game-key-card downloads and offline play work?
- Insert the game-key card and follow the instructions shown on the HOME Menu.
- Connect the console to the internet to download the game data. The destination must have at least the free space stated on that release’s packaging or Nintendo Store/eShop listing.
- Connect to the internet for the game’s first launch. After that first launch, Nintendo says the game can start offline, provided the game-key card is inserted.
Nintendo says a Nintendo Account is not required to download the game data. The download itself does require an internet connection.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
How much storage should you leave free?
Check the exact title’s stated requirement rather than estimating from its physical format or the card type. Nintendo directs buyers to the game-key-card packaging or the corresponding Nintendo Store/eShop page for the required space. Game sizes vary, and Nintendo’s reviewed support pages do not provide a single exhaustive per-game download-size list.
Nintendo lists 256 GB of storage for Switch 2, with a portion reserved for system use. That is not 256 GB of guaranteed free space for games. Nintendo currently says no individual games require additional storage to play, but this does not remove the free-space requirement for downloading a game-key-card title.

Can I use a microSD card on Nintendo Switch 2?
For Switch 2 game data and captures, the expansion format is microSD Express. Nintendo says cards that meet the microSD Express standard are supported up to 2 TB. Ordinary microSD cards used with the original Nintendo Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 games or save data.

What stays in console storage?
Game saves remain in the console’s system memory; they cannot be copied or saved to a microSD Express card. Do not treat an expansion card as a backup location for save data.
What to know before using or changing cards
- Nintendo recommends using a single microSD Express card. Software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto one card, although data can be copied to a larger card.
- Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says an internet-connected system update is required the first time you use a microSD Express card.
- Choose a card that explicitly meets the microSD Express standard; an ordinary microSD card is not a substitute for Switch 2 game storage.
How to check a physical game before buying
Nintendo’s physical-card guidance covers several categories, including Switch 2 exclusive software, Switch 2 Edition games, and compatible Nintendo Switch software. Those compatibility labels are separate from whether a particular Switch 2 release uses a regular game card or a game-key card.
Quick Recap
- Look at the individual game’s packaging or official Nintendo Store/eShop listing to identify its card format.
- If it is a game-key card, check the listed download-space requirement and make sure you can connect to the internet for the download and first launch.
- Confirm that enough storage is available on the console or a compatible microSD Express card; do not assume the physical card contains the full game.
