On Nintendo Switch 2, “physical” can mean two different things: a standard game card or a game-key card that requires the full game to be downloaded. Digital eShop purchases are managed as virtual game cards. Check the exact edition before buying, because the format affects setup, storage, and how you access the game.
Compare the three ways to buy a Switch 2 game
| Format | What you get | Download and internet | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard physical game card | A game card. Nintendo distinguishes standard game cards from game-key cards; check the package and listing for the specific title. | Nintendo’s cited guidance explains the full-download requirement for game-key cards, but does not establish one download rule for every standard card, update, or DLC. | Insert the card to play. Do not assume the card includes every update or later DLC. |
| Game-key card | A physical card that serves as a key to the game download; the full game data is not on the card. | Internet is needed for the initial download and first launch. Nintendo says subsequent launches can be offline. | You need enough system or microSD Express storage, and the card must be inserted to play. |
| Digital eShop purchase | A digital game represented by Nintendo as a virtual game card. | Buy and download through Nintendo’s digital system. Once loaded, a virtual game card can be played offline. | Virtual game cards can be loaded or ejected across linked consoles and lent under Nintendo’s family-group rules. Extra game storage requires microSD Express. |
Nintendo Support says, “Nintendo Switch 2 supports both regular game cards and game-key cards.” For a game-key card, Nintendo explains: “The game itself isn’t included on the game-key card, so you’ll have to download it before you can play.” See Nintendo’s Game-Key Card Overview, Virtual Game Card Guide, and microSD Express FAQ.

What is a game-key card?
A game-key card is a physical card that unlocks access to a game download; it does not contain the full game data. The key marking identifies this format. It is not the same as a standard game card, even though both are physical items you insert into the console.

Yes. Nintendo says the full game must be downloaded before you can play. You need an internet connection for the initial download and enough available space on the console or a microSD Express card. Check the title’s current Nintendo Store or eShop page and its package for download and edition details; requirements vary by game.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Can you play a game-key card offline?
After the initial download, Nintendo says subsequent launches do not require internet. The game-key card still needs to be inserted when you play. This is different from a digital purchase’s access method, but both formats involve downloaded game data.
How Switch 2 storage affects your choice
For expanded storage of downloadable software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and videos, Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards. A regular microSD card used with the original Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 digital games. Nintendo’s FAQ lists support for microSD Express cards up to 2 TB; the page does not state a publication year.

- NEXT GEN GAMING: Works with Nintendo Switch 2.
- READY FOR TOMORROW. Ready for future products with a PCIe-NVMe interface; performs at UHS-I speeds with microSD UHS-I and UHS-II devices.
- EXPONENTIALLY FASTER PERFORMANCE. Up to 4.4 times faster transfer speeds than our fastest microSD UHS-I cards [9]. Transfer a 2-hour HD movie in less than 3.5 seconds [1]; save up to 2.8 minutes transferring 60 minutes of 4K UHD video [4] shot at 30 fps when paired with the SanDisk PRO-READER SD Express Dual Card (sold separately) [9]
- DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].
- HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.
- Downloaded games and add-on content may need additional space. Check each title’s current listing and plan for updates rather than assuming a card contains everything.
- Game save data stays in Switch 2 system memory. It cannot be copied or saved to the microSD Express card.
- MicroSD Express cards are sold separately. Extra storage is relevant if your downloaded games and other files exceed the available system space.
Can you share digital games on Switch 2?
Nintendo treats eShop games and DLC as virtual game cards. You can load or eject virtual game cards across linked consoles, and lend them to members of your Nintendo Account family group under Nintendo’s system. Follow Nintendo’s current virtual game card instructions for the console and account steps; do not assume that lending means two people can play the same copy at the same time.
Choose the format that fits how you play
Choose a standard game card when
- You want a physical game card and have checked that the listing is for a standard card rather than a game-key card.
- You are comfortable inserting the card whenever you play and checking separately for updates or DLC.
Choose a game-key card when
- You want the physical card but accept that the full game must be downloaded first.
- You have internet access for setup, sufficient storage, and are comfortable keeping the card inserted to play.
Choose a digital purchase when
- You prefer not to manage a physical card and are comfortable downloading the game.
- You want to use Nintendo’s virtual game card loading and family-group lending features, following their account and console rules.
Before paying, compare the exact edition and current total price, including any required upgrade pack or DLC. For a physical listing, verify whether it is a standard game card or game-key card. Check the download size, internet needs, and available storage for that title. Prices, stock, retailer return terms, and resale values are not established here and should be checked with the seller and the specific product listing.

Buying an original Switch edition for Switch 2
Switch 2 plays compatible original Nintendo Switch physical and digital games, but compatibility is not universal. Confirm the exact title against Nintendo’s current compatibility information and check the game’s own product page before buying. Do not infer compatibility for a particular edition solely from the fact that it was released for the original Switch.
