There is no universal discount that makes an older flagship worthwhile: compare current local offers for the exact model, its successor, and a new mid-range phone.
Start with the exact phone and offer
“Last year’s flagship” is not a precise buying category. Before comparing prices, identify the model and variant, storage capacity, market, and whether the listing is new old stock, used, or refurbished. Those details affect both value and what you should expect from the device.

Compare what you would pay today, not the older phone’s launch price against a current sale. Use offers for the same storage and comparable condition, and include taxes, fees, trade-in requirements, and any likely battery or repair cost. A discount is useful only if the total offer is better for a phone you can use safely and comfortably.

Look up the manufacturer’s support commitment for the exact model. The phone’s age when you buy it does not reset its support timeline: estimate how many years of operating-system and security updates remain from now, then compare that with how long you expect to keep it. Support commitments vary by model, so do not assume a processor or brand name alone tells you the end date. Compare it with the successor and a mid-range phone
Set the older flagship beside the newest flagship and a current mid-range alternative, using local prices and equivalent storage and condition where possible. Judge features by whether you will notice them in daily use: camera, display, performance, size, charging, and any successor-specific capabilities.
An older flagship may still offer a premium camera, display, or build. A current mid-range phone may bring a longer support runway, better battery life, or faster charging. Neither category wins automatically; the practical choice depends on the trade-offs that matter to you and the real prices available in your market. Establish condition, battery health, and repair history
Do not treat “used,” “renewed,” and “refurbished” as interchangeable grades. Ask who inspected or repaired the device, what parts were replaced, whether battery condition is documented, and what warranty and return period apply. Get the answers in writing where possible.
For a preowned iPhone, Apple recommends checking seller reliability, returns, certification, condition, battery health, parts and service history, Activation Lock, and carrier lock. A “refurbished” label alone does not promise a new battery or a particular warranty. For example, Samsung’s US Certified Re-Newed program states that its devices use genuine Samsung parts, including a certified new battery, and describes a 147-point inspection and one-year limited warranty. Those are terms of that specific US program, not a general standard for refurbished phones: Samsung Certified Re-Newed program terms.

Before paying, confirm that the phone is not tied to someone else’s account or activation, check its IMEI status where applicable, and verify that the carrier lock and supported network services work for your carrier and location. A model name alone may not establish compatibility for every variant or market.

Use the return or warranty window to inspect and test the device promptly. Check the display, cameras, calls, mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, charging, speakers, and ports as appropriate. Use this pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the listing: exact model and variant, storage, market, and whether it is new old stock, used, or refurbished.
- Check support: find the official support information for that exact model and compare the remaining OS and security support with your intended ownership period.
- Compare live offers: check the successor and a current mid-range alternative at comparable storage and condition; calculate total cost including fees, trade-in terms, and likely repairs.
- Get condition details: request battery-health information where available, repair and parts history, cosmetic condition, and the refurbisher’s process.
- Check access and connectivity: verify account or activation-lock status, IMEI status where relevant, carrier lock, and network compatibility.
- Confirm your remedies: read the return window and written warranty, including who handles repairs.
- Test promptly: inspect and check core hardware and connectivity while you can still return or claim warranty service.
