A NinjaTrader Add On can subscribe to an account’s ExecutionUpdate event and write execution data to a CSV file for a separate Python program to read. That is an event-to-file handoff—not, by itself, a complete trade journal or proof that the Python script builds reports. The exact columns, file behavior, and Python transformations depend on the actual code; the 177-line description alone does not establish them.
What the add-on listens to
NinjaTrader’s account-level Add On example selects an account, attaches a handler to Account.ExecutionUpdate, reads values from the execution, and removes the handler during cleanup. The event can represent a new execution, an amendment, or a removal, so a listener must decide how each case is recorded. The official NinjaTrader ExecutionUpdate reference documents both the subscription lifecycle and those event cases.

Calling the add-on “passive” describes the intended scope: observing account executions rather than submitting trades. It does not establish that the implementation has no side effects, handles every event case, or persists data reliably. Those details require the source code.
Execution rows are not automatically orders or trades
NinjaTrader defines an execution as a fill. One order can produce multiple executions when it fills in parts. Consequently, recording each execution as a CSV row preserves fill-level events; it does not automatically create one row per order, group entries and exits into completed trades, or calculate realized profit and loss. The NinjaTrader OnExecutionUpdate() reference explains the execution/fill distinction and partial fills.

If Python later combines multiple fills, that grouping is a separate transformation. Its rules should be explicit: for example, whether it groups by order ID, how it handles partial fills, and how it treats amended or removed executions. An execution export alone should not be assumed to contain commissions, completed-trade groupings, strategy attribution, or realized P&L.
Account-level monitoring versus a strategy callback
| Approach | Scope | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
Account.ExecutionUpdate in an Add On |
Account-level execution event subscription | NinjaTrader’s Add On example attaches a handler to an account and detaches it during cleanup. The event can report new, amended, or removed executions. |
Strategy OnExecutionUpdate() |
Executions of orders submitted and managed by that strategy | It is a strategy callback, not a substitute for an account-wide Add On subscription. |
The callback distinction matters when choosing where to observe fills. Use the account event pattern when the goal is account-level monitoring; use a strategy callback when the logic concerns that strategy’s managed orders. NinjaTrader documents the strategy callback’s scope and its execution fields, including execution ID, price, quantity, market position, order ID, and time, in its strategy reference.

What Python can do with the CSV—and what is not established
Python’s standard-library csv module provides tools for reading and writing CSV data, and pathlib provides object-oriented filesystem paths. These are appropriate building blocks for a file handoff: the add-on writes a file and a Python program reads or otherwise processes it. See the Python Software Foundation’s CSV documentation and pathlib documentation.
Those standard-library capabilities do not reveal what a particular script does. Without that script, it is not possible to say whether Python watches for new rows, polls the file, rereads it in full, calculates statistics, exports another file, or updates a dashboard. Nor can the CSV’s column names, row format, timestamp interpretation, or numeric conversion be asserted.

To understand a concrete handoff, inspect the two sides together and document the data contract once it is known:
- Which columns the add-on writes, and the meaning and type of each value.
- Whether a row represents an execution event and how partial fills appear.
- How timestamps and time zones are represented and interpreted.
- How Python detects and reads new or changed data, and what output it produces.
- How amendments and removals are represented, if the implementation handles them.
Timing and cleanup affect reliability
Do not assume identical callback timing across test and live contexts. NinjaTrader documents immediate Playback triggering and simulated random delay in Sim101; its strategy guidance also warns about event-order caveats for Rithmic and Interactive Brokers. Timing observations in one setup therefore do not establish the behavior of another.

Subscription lifecycle is equally important. The official Add On example removes the event handler during cleanup. A listener that remains subscribed after its UI or service lifecycle ends may continue receiving events when it should no longer be active; the implementation should detach the handler at the appropriate cleanup point.

Reliable file persistence depends on implementation choices not specified by the title: destination path, append versus overwrite, header creation, encoding, flushing, file locking, and recovery after restart. Check those in the actual code rather than assuming that a callback necessarily produces a durable, complete CSV record.
