On the Ninja Luxe Café Pro ES701, choose the drink and install the matching basket first: the machine weighs the portafilter, identifies the basket, and grinds an automatic dose. To adjust grind size, compare CURRENT with RECOMMENDED on the display and turn the side dial; to adjust strength, use TEMP/STRENGTH. The key distinction is that strength changes espresso’s grounds-to-water ratio and output, but changes how many beans are ground for filter coffee.

How to change the grind size
- Fit the basket and weigh the portafilter. Install the basket suited to your drink, then seat the portafilter in the grinder cradle and let go so the machine can weigh it and detect the basket.
- Select the intended drink. Use the center dial to choose the brew you plan to make.
- Compare the settings. Read CURRENT and RECOMMENDED on the display. To follow Barista Assist, turn the grinder’s side dial until CURRENT matches RECOMMENDED. You can choose another setting when deliberately dialing in, but the recommendation is a sensible starting point, particularly with unfamiliar beans.
- Grind and tamp. Press START GRIND. When the panel signals TAMP, press the integrated tamper lever firmly to its stop twice for espresso. Move the portafilter to the group head and press START BREW.
The scale runs from 1 (finest) to 25 (coarsest). Ninja’s guide associates finer settings with espresso and coarser settings with coffee drinks. After adding beans or changing to a new bean, allow two to three brews for the recommendation to settle; it can shift as beans age.

The ES701 does not normally ask you to enter a dose in grams. Its scale weighs the portafilter, and the machine detects the fitted basket before calculating how much coffee to grind. Basket selection therefore matters: choose the basket intended for the selected drink before grinding.

The owner guide gives approximate examples of 9 g for single-basket drinks, 18 g for double-basket drinks, and 40 g for quad drinks. These are the guide’s basket-and-drink examples, not a user-entered dose control or a universal recipe for every drink and basket.
How to adjust brew strength
- Press TEMP/STRENGTH. If STRENGTH is not lit, hold the button for three seconds to switch into strength mode.
- Select one, two, or three dot levels. Two dots is the default. The effect depends on whether you are making espresso or filter coffee.

For espresso, the setting changes the water-to-grounds ratio and therefore the output volume; use a larger cup for the one-dot setting. For filter coffee, strength changes the amount of beans ground. Do not assume the button alters both drink types in the same way.

Dialing in and diagnosing flow
Begin by matching CURRENT to RECOMMENDED, especially when the beans are new. Then use the result in the cup and the machine’s behavior to decide whether to move away from the recommendation.

Check that the basket is clean as well; the guide also identifies cleanliness and descaling as relevant to flow problems.
- Fast stream: a grind that is too coarse can contribute.
- Choosing among settings: consider the selected drink and basket, the beans and their taste, extraction flow, and the concentration or output volume you want.
These flow symptoms are clues, not proof of a single cause. There is no one grind number established as right for all beans; use the display recommendation as a starting point and adjust deliberately.
