NiMH and lithium-ion batteries are not interchangeable just because they are both rechargeable—or because a cell seems to fit. For removable AA or AAA devices that support rechargeable cells, NiMH can be a practical choice if its 1.2 V nominal voltage meets the device’s requirements. For a compact device designed around a lithium-ion pack, use the specified pack and charging system.
NiMH vs. lithium-ion: the practical differences
The choice starts with the device, not a general claim that one chemistry is always better. Cell voltage, physical format, current demands, built-in protection and the charging system all matter. Check the device manual and battery markings before substituting anything.

| Decision factor | NiMH | Lithium-ion | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common consumer formats | Widely sold as removable AA and AAA cells. | Common in phones, laptops, cameras, tools and device-specific packs; cylindrical formats also exist. | Confirm both the exact size and chemistry against the device instructions. A matching shape does not establish compatibility. U.S. EPA; National Instruments |
| Typical cell voltage | 1.2 V nominal in National Instruments’ comparison. | Typically 3.6–3.7 V per cell in that comparison. | These are typical cell values, not a promise for every pack or specialty product. Do not substitute a bare Li-ion cell for an AA NiMH cell. National Instruments |
| Energy and size | Lower energy density than Li-ion in National Instruments’ comparison. | Higher energy density; the U.S. EPA says Li-ion can store the same energy in a smaller, lighter battery than other types. | Li-ion’s energy density is useful when a product is designed to save space and weight. U.S. EPA; National Instruments |
| Charging and system design | Use a charger designed for NiMH cells and follow the cell maker’s directions. | Often integrated into a device-specific battery, protection and charging system. | Use the charger and charging method specified for the battery or device—not a charger selected only because its connector fits. U.S. CPSC |
Which chemistry suits your device?
Removable AA or AAA devices used regularly
Consider NiMH rechargeables if the device accepts rechargeable cells at their nominal voltage and you have a compatible charger. Low-self-discharge NiMH variants can be worth comparing for storage, but self-discharge depends on the specific product; do not assume all cells of a chemistry behave alike. Analog Devices
For scale, ANSMANN lists one AA/HR6 NiMH product at 1.2 V nominal, 2850 mAh nominal capacity and 2650 mAh minimum capacity. Those figures describe that product, not NiMH cells as a whole. ANSMANN

- RELIABLE PERFORMANCE: 8-pack of AA rechargeable NiMH batteries (2,000 mAh)
- DEVICE COMPATIBLE: Ideal for remote controls, flashlights, clocks, and more
- LONG LASTING: Can be recharged up to 1000 times with minimal power loss

Compact electronics with a built-in or bespoke pack
Use the device maker’s specified Li-ion pack and charging system. The battery’s voltage, protection circuitry and charger are part of the product design; substituting a cell based on appearance or the word “rechargeable” can create electrical or safety problems. Li-ion’s energy density helps explain its use in products where low mass and small volume matter. U.S. EPA; U.S. CPSC
AA device that shuts down early with 1.2 V cells
Check the device manual before trying another chemistry. Some purpose-built rechargeable AA products provide regulated 1.5 V output using Li-ion internally; they are not bare 3.6–3.7 V Li-ion cells and may require a dedicated charger. Compatibility and charging requirements vary by product, so follow that product’s manufacturer instructions.

- RELIABLE PERFORMANCE: 16-pack of AA rechargeable NiMH batteries (2,000 mAh)
- DEVICE COMPATIBLE: Ideal for remote controls, flashlights, clocks, and more
- LONG LASTING: Can be recharged up to 1000 times with minimal power loss
- LOW SELF DISCHARGE: Maintains 80% capacity for 2 years
- EASY USE & STORAGE: Has a shelf-life up to 5 years for everyday or emergency use; arrives pre-charged and ready to use
Infrequent use or long storage
Compare the exact battery’s self-discharge and storage specifications. Chemistry-level comparisons and the existence of low-self-discharge NiMH variants do not guarantee how a particular current product will perform in storage. Analog Devices

- Follow the battery and device markings, manual and manufacturer charging instructions.
- Do not use a charger simply because its plug fits. The U.S. CPSC warns of battery and charger hazards including overheating and fire, and emphasizes safety protections suited to the battery system. U.S. CPSC
- Stop using a swollen or otherwise damaged Li-ion battery. The U.S. EPA advises contacting the battery or device manufacturer for handling guidance; avoid improvising a repair or disposal method. U.S. EPA
- For Li-ion storage, the U.S. EPA recommends room temperature and avoiding prolonged exposure to extreme heat or cold. These are U.S. consumer recommendations; follow local guidance elsewhere. U.S. EPA
How to recycle rechargeable batteries
In the United States, do not put used Li-ion batteries in household garbage or municipal recycling bins. Use a specialized or certified battery/electronics recycler, a participating take-back service, or a local household hazardous-waste program, and check local acceptance rules. EPA advises taping terminals or placing batteries separately in bags to reduce short-circuit risk. For a damaged Li-ion battery, ask the manufacturer for specific handling guidance. U.S. EPA: used Li-ion batteries; U.S. EPA: used household batteries

How to make the choice
- Read the device instructions. Confirm the allowed battery chemistry, voltage, size and whether the cells are user-replaceable.
- Match the battery to the system. For a removable AA/AAA device that permits NiMH, use suitable NiMH cells; for a device-specific pack, use the manufacturer-specified pack.
- Check the charger. Verify that it is specified for the exact battery chemistry or device system.
- Consider your routine. Frequent use, storage time, charging access, size and weight can all affect which supported option is most convenient.
- Plan for end of life. Identify an appropriate local collection route before disposing of rechargeable cells.
