To start with Nightwatch.js, use its CLI to scaffold a project, choose a test type and browser, then run the generated sample test. Nightwatch is a Node.js framework that controls browsers through the W3C WebDriver API; the quickest beginner path is a local end-to-end test before adding remote browsers or other testing types.
What Nightwatch.js does
Nightwatch.js is a Node.js test automation framework. Its official overview describes it as “an integrated framework for performing automated end-to-end testing on web applications and websites, across all major browsers.” It uses the W3C WebDriver API to control browsers, and documents additional paths for component, mobile, API, visual regression, and accessibility testing. The setup wizard configures dependencies according to the testing type you select, so these paths do not all share an identical setup. Nightwatch: What is Nightwatch?
For a first project, end-to-end testing in a local browser is a practical starting point. You can change the test type, language, runner, browser, and execution location as your needs evolve.
Check prerequisites and choose a starting setup
The Nightwatch getting-started page lists Node.js as a prerequisite and says it supports versions above V14.20. That is the wording of the documentation, not a guarantee for every current Nightwatch release; check the current installation guidance and release compatibility before choosing a Node version. The initializer walks you through the main decisions:
- Test type: Select the kind of testing you intend to do. Nightwatch documents end-to-end, component, mobile, API, visual regression, and accessibility paths.
- Language and runner: Choose JavaScript or TypeScript, and a runner such as Nightwatch’s runner, Mocha, or CucumberJS.
- Browser: Choose the target browser or browsers for the initial configuration.
- Test folder and base URL: The documented folder default is
testsand base URL default ishttp://localhost. The URL is configurable; set it to the application environment your tests should visit. - Execution location: Choose local, remote/cloud, or both. Local is simpler for a first run; remote execution needs endpoint and provider configuration.
- Optional setup: The prompts also cover anonymous metrics, defaulting to no, and optional mobile-device setup.
Create a project with the Nightwatch CLI
Scaffold a new project
With Node.js installed, run this command to create a project in a new directory:
npm init nightwatch my-nightwatch-project
Replace my-nightwatch-project with the directory name you want. The initializer asks permission to install create-nightwatch, then prompts for configuration choices and generates a nightwatch.conf.js file and sample tests.

Set up Nightwatch in an existing project
From the root of an existing project, run:
npm init nightwatch
Answer the same setup questions. Review the resulting configuration so its base URL, test location, runner, and browser targets match the project.

Run the generated sample tests
The getting-started guide documents this example command:
npx nightwatch ./nightwatch/examples
That path is the guide’s sample test source; use the path created for your own project if it differs. The CLI accepts a file or folder as its source. Its documented invocation pattern is:
Rank #3
npx nightwatch [source] [options]
For example, run a single test file by passing its path as the source, or pass a folder to run tests from that directory. The getting-started example reports an HTML report under tests_output/nightwatch-html-report/index.html; output and report generation can vary with project configuration.
Understand the browser and driver setup
Nightwatch sends browser commands through WebDriver, a W3C-standard protocol. Browser-specific drivers implement that API; the official overview lists Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. Selenium Server/Grid can coordinate distributed runs across WebDriver nodes. Nightwatch: What is Nightwatch?
Local Chrome
The local Chrome environment guide illustrates installing nightwatch and chromedriver from npm, then defining environments in test_settings. It requires a default environment, from which named environments inherit; a named environment can select Chrome with desiredCapabilities. Use your own application URL rather than the guide’s demonstration URL. Nightwatch: Environments

Use the configuration generated by your chosen quickstart as the source of truth for your project. Driver and browser compatibility can change, so check current Nightwatch installation guidance if a local browser fails to launch.
Test code and the browser object
Nightwatch test scripts use the browser API object. The API reference notes that browser is also available as a global starting with Nightwatch 2. Prefer the naming style in the documentation for your installed version, and do not mix older client-based examples with newer browser examples without accounting for the difference. When to move tests to a remote grid or cloud
Local execution is suitable for learning and quick feedback on a development machine. A Selenium Grid or cloud provider becomes useful when you need browser runs on provider-hosted machines, broader browser coverage, or distributed execution. Nightwatch documents remote Selenium and cloud integrations including BrowserStack and Sauce Labs. Nightwatch: Cloud testing
Remote configuration uses provider settings under test_settings and requires the relevant endpoint details and account credentials or keys. Credentials are specific to your provider and are not supplied by Nightwatch. Keep secrets out of committed configuration files, using your project’s secret-management approach instead.
Common setup problems and fixes
- Node compatibility error: The documented Node threshold can change with releases. Check Nightwatch’s current installation guidance and use a supported Node version for the release you installed.
- The test command cannot find tests: Check that the source path you pass to
npx nightwatchexists relative to the current working directory. Pass the correct file or folder path. - Chrome does not start locally: Confirm that Chrome is installed and that your local configuration selects Chrome and has the needed driver dependency. Recheck browser/driver compatibility against current setup guidance.
- Remote session cannot connect: Verify the provider host, port, credentials or keys, and remote environment settings. Local settings alone do not configure a cloud or Grid endpoint.
- Tests open the wrong site: Update the configured base URL from its default to the URL for the intended application environment.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page rather than automate browser interactions and assertions, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
For example, this cURL request captures Stripe as a WebP image:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
