Galen Framework automates responsive layout checks by opening a page in a Selenium-controlled browser, setting a viewport, and checking the rendered page against layout rules you define. Run it with local browsers for a focused test suite, or configure Selenium Grid for broader browser coverage and parallel execution. The checks are more than screenshots: Galen evaluates element positions, sizes, visibility, and relationships, then can report failures with screenshots that highlight the affected elements.

How Galen tests a responsive layout

A Galen test turns a design expectation into a checkable contract. You identify page elements, define how they should appear in a given layout, then run the specification against a browser at one or more viewport sizes. Galen uses Selenium to interact with the page and inspect element geometry. Its documented workflow is to open the page, resize the browser, and evaluate the page against your specification. See the Galen documentation and framework overview.

This makes Galen useful for catching regressions such as a navigation bar overlapping content at a narrow width, a button moving outside its container, or two elements no longer maintaining their expected spacing. A screenshot alone shows what rendered; a Galen spec can state what relationship or dimension must hold.

Plan the checks before choosing browsers

  1. Choose the user-visible elements whose layout matters, such as the header, navigation, main content, forms, and key controls.
  2. Write expected dimensions, positions, visibility, and relationships for those elements in a Galen spec.
  3. Choose representative viewport sizes or device/layout tags, then associate the relevant checks with them.
  4. Run the specs against a local Selenium browser or a configured Selenium Grid.
  5. Review the report and any failure screenshots; update the page or the spec only after confirming which behavior is intended.

Galen supports its own specification and test-suite syntax, alongside Java and JavaScript integrations. Its JavaScript API includes operations for creating a driver, resizing the browser, and checking a layout; syntax and setup should be verified against the version in use. The JavaScript API reference and test suite syntax reference describe those paths.

Run a first check

The official first-project tutorial demonstrates running a check from the command line with a URL and viewport dimensions and producing an HTML report. The exact command, installed Galen version, and available browser driver can affect what works in a particular environment, so use the tutorial as a version-sensitive starting point rather than assuming one command fits every installation: Galen First Project tutorial.

A practical first run should focus on a single page and one viewport class. Once the browser can open the page and the report identifies the checks that passed or failed, add other viewport sizes and browser configurations. This separates spec errors and browser setup problems from actual responsive regressions.

Choose local execution or Selenium Grid

Local browser

A local browser is a straightforward route for developing specs and debugging failures. Galen’s browser configuration documentation covers local browser setup and driver configuration, including a ChromeDriver setting for Chrome. Keep the browser, driver, Selenium, and Galen versions compatible; the documented browser examples are not a guarantee that every listed browser or old configuration remains supported today. Consult Configuring browsers and check the current release information for the versions you install.

Selenium Grid

Grid lets a test suite request a browser configuration remotely, with entries that can specify browser, browser version, platform, page URL, and viewport size. Galen documents Grid as an option for cross-browser execution and parallel runs. Configuration can be project-specific or global, with Grid URL and browser parameters described in its configuration guide and suite syntax.

Choose Grid when the additional browser coverage or parallel execution is worth the setup and maintenance. A local run is usually simpler when authoring a spec or investigating one failure. In either case, budget for keeping browser and driver versions aligned.

Hosted browser execution

Galen’s product site names BrowserStack, LambdaTest, Sauce Labs, and HeadSpin as cloud options for running Galen tests against different mobile devices. That list is not a current compatibility matrix or endorsement, and it does not establish the present terms or availability of any service. Check the provider’s current documentation and Galen’s own guidance before selecting a hosted setup: Galen product site.

What to assert—and what screenshots can tell you

Use specs for explicit layout expectations: object position, size, visibility, and relationships to other elements at a tagged viewport. Galen’s project material also describes image- and color-related testing capabilities, but the exact assertion types and syntax depend on the framework interface and version. See the About page and product site for the documented scope.

When a check fails, Galen can report the error, generate a screenshot, and highlight the element involved. That evidence helps locate a mismatch, but it does not decide whether the spec or the page reflects the intended design. Validate the expected behavior before changing either.

Setup issues and fixes

  • The browser does not start: confirm that the browser is installed and that its driver path and executable are configured correctly. Chrome requires a compatible ChromeDriver in the documented configuration; consult browser configuration.
  • A run fails after a browser or Selenium update: treat compatibility as version-specific. Check the installed Galen, Selenium, browser, and driver versions together; the first-project tutorial specifically advises checking Selenium compatibility when browser execution fails.
  • Grid cannot find or start the requested browser: verify the Grid URL and requested browser parameters against the nodes actually available in your Grid. Galen’s configuration guide covers Grid settings.
  • A check fails at only one viewport: inspect the report and failure screenshot at that size, then determine whether the layout violates the intended rule or the rule is too broad for that responsive state. Keep specs and viewport tags aligned with the layouts you intend to support.
  • The report is missing or unexpected: follow the setup and invocation for your installed version in the first-project tutorial, which demonstrates the HTML report output. Confirm the test actually reached the check stage before treating a missing report as a layout result.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot rather than an assertion-based layout test, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It does not replace Galen’s layout specifications, but a single GET request can return an image or PDF:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.

Keep version and coverage expectations explicit

Galen’s docs include configurations for Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, PhantomJS, and Edge, but those examples should not be read as a promise of present-day compatibility. Browser support changes with releases, drivers, and Selenium. Before making a coverage claim for a particular browser or platform, confirm it against the versions and infrastructure you will actually run. Galen’s open-source project is available under the Apache License 2.0 in its GitHub repository.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Galen replace visual regression testing?

No. Galen’s distinctive workflow checks user-authored layout expectations; its documentation also describes image and color testing capabilities, but a spec-based layout check is not the same as relying only on screenshot comparisons.

Can Galen run without Selenium?

Its documented browser workflow uses Selenium for browser interaction and element geometry checks, so browser execution depends on Selenium and compatible browser-driver setup.

Is Galen suitable for mobile layout checks?

It can check layouts at configured viewport sizes, and Galen names hosted services that offer access to mobile devices. Verify the current service and browser configuration you intend to use.
