How do I find an element by CSS selector in Selenium?
Inspect the rendered DOM, choose the smallest useful selector that identifies the intended element, then pass it to the CSS locator strategy. Selenium’s locator documentation demonstrates finding an input by ID with #fname:

How should I write a selector that identifies the intended element?
Prefer a unique, meaningful target
If the page exposes a unique ID, use the ID locator or CSS #id syntax. If a unique ID is unavailable, Selenium recommends a well-written CSS selector. Prefer an attribute whose meaning is clear in the application over a long chain of incidental ancestors, classes, and positions. Verify the rendered markup: no attribute is guaranteed to remain stable across application changes.

Use attribute selectors for useful attributes
The general CSS form for matching an attribute value is [attribute=value]. Add an element name when that helps distinguish targets, as in input[name='newsletter']. Choose values that identify the control you intend, not merely a value that happens to occur on one page state.
Check uniqueness before relying on a match
A singular lookup returns the first match, not an error merely because several elements match. If the selector is too broad, the test can silently interact with the wrong element. Use a more specific selector or search from an appropriate parent context when the intended element is one among repeated items.

When several matches are expected, request them explicitly:

print(element.text)Selenium’s locator example includes two elements with the class information. find_elements returns the matching collection, and returns an empty list when there is no match; find_element returns the first match.

CSS, ID, or XPath: which locator should I choose?

Selenium describes XPath as flexible but harder to debug and says it tends to be slow; its guidance also notes browser vendors typically do not performance-test XPath selectors. This is Selenium’s guidance, not a universal benchmark showing CSS is faster in every browser. |
Keep the selector language and locator strategy paired. For example, //input[@value='f'] is XPath, not CSS. Team consistency, selector clarity, uniqueness, and maintainability matter more than choosing a strategy based on an assumed universal speed advantage. See Selenium’s locator recommendations.
How do I search within a parent or a Shadow DOM?
Limit the search to a WebElement
When a target belongs to one particular component or repeated section, locate that parent and search from it, rather than making a page-wide selector that could match another section. A scoped lookup searches descendants of its search context:

A normal page-level CSS lookup does not automatically cross a shadow boundary. Locate the shadow host, get its shadow root, and search from that root:

Why am I getting InvalidSelectorException?
InvalidSelectorException usually indicates malformed selector syntax or that the expression was sent to the wrong locator strategy. Check these points:
- Look for missing brackets or quotes, misspelled punctuation, and invalid characters.
- Match the expression to the strategy: CSS syntax goes with
By.CSS_SELECTOR; XPath syntax goes withBy.XPATH. - Do not send a full CSS or XPath expression to an ID locator.
By.IDexpects the raw ID, such asfname. - Distinguish invalid syntax from a valid selector that finds nothing. For no match, check the current DOM, page state, timing, and search context instead.
