A browser compatibility testing matrix turns support promises into a practical test plan: it identifies which browser, version, operating system and device combinations matter, what experience each should receive, and how the team will verify it. Build it from your users, product requirements and risk—not a universal browser checklist.
1. Define what the matrix covers
Start by naming the product surface: a public website, web app, embedded web view, or another environment. Then identify its geography, customer segments, contractual support obligations, platform-specific features and critical journeys. A matrix for a checkout flow may need different priorities from one for a mostly informational site.
Keep the scope explicit. A browser matrix does not automatically cover embedded web views or assistive technology, and browser compatibility is only one part of product quality. Plan separate accessibility, usability, performance and security checks where they are required. MDN describes Baseline as a summary of browser support, not a substitute for those other forms of testing.
2. Choose targets using evidence
Use site analytics and customer-support evidence, when available, to understand browser, operating system, device and geography patterns. These sources are more specific to your users than global popularity alone. MDN notes that usage statistics can be viewed by location and informed by site analytics; see its guidance on testing strategies and supporting older browsers.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you do not yet have useful user data, make a provisional estimate from the product’s audience and requirements. Mark the assumption and set a review trigger, rather than presenting the initial list as a proven picture of usage.
For each candidate configuration, weigh:
- How many relevant users it represents, including geography and customer segment.
- Whether the platform or browser engine differs materially from already selected targets.
- Whether critical features, integrations or media behavior depend on it.
- The impact if a core journey fails.
- Whether the configuration can be tested automatically, needs manual exploration, or requires a real device.
- The ongoing effort to keep its version and test environment current.
3. Set support tiers and a version policy
For each tier, say what users can expect and what the team commits to test. MDN illustrates an A/B/C approach: A-grade browsers receive full support and thorough testing; B-grade browsers retain basic access to core information and services; C-grade browsers receive no dedicated testing, with defensive fallbacks. This is a planning example, not a mandatory industry standard. Adapt the labels and promises to your obligations.
Define what “current” means for every browser. A policy might track a named release channel or tie supported versions to the team’s release cycle, but it must say how the rule works and how it is updated. The reviewed guidance does not prescribe one universal number of older versions to support. Set that boundary using customer evidence, risk, support commitments and team capacity.

4. Build the matrix
Use a row for each testable configuration, or make every dimension unmistakable if your team groups related configurations. One browser name is not enough: record platform and device as well as browser and version policy, since a desktop test does not establish mobile behavior.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Browser and engine | Version policy | OS/platform and device | Tier | Critical journeys | Test method | Result and date | Owner and review trigger |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example: Chrome / Chromium | Example: stable channel; record exact tested version | Example: desktop OS and desktop class | Full | Sign-in, core task | Automated journeys plus exploratory checks | Pass/fail, known issue, tested version and date | Owning team; review on browser or product change |
| Example: Safari / WebKit | Defined release rule; record exact tested version | Example: supported mobile platform and phone | Full or basic, per policy | Sign-in, purchase, media if relevant | Automation plus real-device check where needed | Pass/fail, known issue, tested version and date | Named owner; review on support or audience change |
| Example: less common or older configuration | Explicit supported boundary | Platform and device class relevant to users | Basic or fallback-only | Core information and service access | Targeted manual or automated checks | Pass/fail, known issue, tested version and date | Named owner; review on customer or risk change |
The sample rows are a template, not a recommended browser list. Replace them with configurations justified by your evidence and obligations. A useful matrix records both the promise and the latest verification, so a support tier cannot be mistaken for a recent passing test.
5. Map feature compatibility to product risk
When a new or important HTML, CSS or JavaScript feature is involved, consult the relevant MDN compatibility table or Browser Compatibility Data (BCD). Use it to spot likely support boundaries and decide whether to use a fallback or progressive enhancement.

Compatibility tables describe web-platform feature support; they do not prove that your application’s complete flow works. Validate important combinations directly. Baseline can summarize feature availability for a defined set of browsers, but it does not certify accessibility, usability, performance, security, every older device or embedded web view. MDN’s Baseline explanation states this limitation explicitly.
6. Match the test method to the configuration
Automate repeatable journeys
Automate stable, high-value flows—such as signing in or completing the product’s core task—across the engines and configurations selected in the matrix. Automation makes regressions repeatable, but it does not remove the need to choose the right targets or inspect the results.

Use the browser that answers the question
Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox and WebKit, and can also run branded Chrome and Microsoft Edge channels. Its bundled Chromium may be ahead of branded stable releases. Use a branded stable channel when the test must match the current public browser; official binaries can matter for media codecs or enterprise browser policies. Use real devices when emulation cannot represent behavior the product relies on.

Keep the Playwright version, browser channel and exact tested browser version with each result. Playwright advises keeping its version current so teams can test newer browser versions and catch failures before public release. Reproducible records make a failure actionable instead of leaving the team to guess which environment was tested.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Review and maintain the matrix
Review the matrix when audience distribution, product features, support obligations or browser releases change. Assign an owner and connect review triggers to release planning. Browser versions and channels change, so a row without a version and test date quickly stops being useful.
Do not keep a configuration merely because it has always appeared on a generic checklist. Reassess its user value, risk and testing cost; equally, do not remove a configuration with contractual or customer significance solely because it is inconvenient to test.

If your matrix work includes capturing pages as reference evidence, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; this is useful for capture, but it does not replace browser compatibility testing or establish that a flow works in each target configuration. The request below uses the documented API pattern; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Does a passing browser test mean the product is fully accessible?
No. Browser compatibility checks do not establish accessibility; assess accessibility separately for the product and its supported journeys.
Should every matrix row be automated?
No. Automate repeatable high-value flows where practical, and use manual exploration or real-device checks when the behavior or platform requires them.
