- Install a current CurseForge-compatible Minecraft launcher and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Check that your computer can make at least 8 GB of memory available to the game while still leaving the operating system usable.
- Keep a separate folder or cloud location for world backups before changing pack versions.
- Decide whether you are playing solo, joining an existing server or hosting one. The client and server must be built from the same release.
- Write down the exact release number you install. A profile that silently updates can become incompatible with an older world or server.
The 8 GB recommendation is the project’s guidance, not a promise of a particular frame rate. View distance, shaders, background applications and your graphics hardware can change performance. - Download the server ZIP whose version number exactly matches every player’s client profile.
- Extract it into a new server directory rather than overwriting an unrelated Forge server.
- Follow the archive’s included Forge installation and launch instructions. Server packs may include a start script, configuration files or a required Java setting; use the files supplied with that release instead of guessing a command.
- Start the server once, stop it cleanly, and read the console for missing dependencies or a Java-version message before inviting players.
- Accept Minecraft’s EULA in the server directory when prompted, then start the server again.
- Give each player the same 2.2.9.7 client profile. A player who installs only the server archive or only a few individual mods does not have a supported client setup.
- Back up the world and the server configuration before updating. Keep the old archive available until everyone has confirmed that the new version loads.

If a quest asks for an item you cannot identify, check the active quest text and recent dialogue before assuming it is junk.

Treat bosses as gated encounters
Bosses are part of the story route. Prepare equipment, healing supplies and a retreat plan, then enter an arena only after the relevant quest has introduced it. Repeatedly attacking a boss while ignoring the quest chain can waste resources if the encounter is intended to unlock after another objective.
How the main story progresses
1. Receive direction from the Watcher
The Watcher establishes the premise and points you toward the first objectives. Read each new dialogue exchange; the story is delivered through these custom interactions rather than through a separate external manual.

2. Defeat the required bosses
Boss fights supply the campaign’s major milestones. Approach each one as a learning encounter: observe its attack patterns, use the combat system taught in the tutorial and keep a safe route back to your equipment. The exact order and conditions can change between pack releases, which is another reason to follow the quests in the installed version instead of an old video.
3. Recover the lost sparks
The lost sparks are central progression items. Record which sparks you have recovered and which quest objective names the next one. If a spark does not appear, reread the active objective and confirm that the preceding boss or interaction has actually been completed.
4. Light the altar
Use the recovered sparks at the altar when the quest directs you to do so. Keep the sparks in your inventory or a secure chest until the relevant step is active; moving a required item into an untracked storage system can make troubleshooting harder.
5. Prepare for the final boss
The final-boss sequence is the culmination of the Watcher’s route, boss victories and altar objectives. Before triggering it, repair or replace essential gear, restock healing items, make a backup of the world and ensure every player has finished the preceding quest step. A backup is especially valuable on a server, where a shared story state affects everyone.
Solo or multiplayer: choose the right quest model

The project specifically warns that playing with a friend in the same FTB Party team is not recommended when you want independent progress. Main-quest progress is shared, story choices synchronize and a player who is offline can miss important items. Decide this before creating the party, not after one player has advanced the campaign.
If you want a shared campaign
Agree on who will start quests, keep everyone online for major dialogue and item hand-ins, and announce when a boss or altar step is about to be triggered. Shared progress works best when the team treats the quest book as a group checklist.

If you want separate campaigns
Do not place everyone in the same FTB Party team. Give each player a clear home area and a way to record which sparks and bosses they have completed. On a shared server, separate teams do not make the world itself private, so avoid taking another player’s named quest items.
Recovering from a missed item
First check whether the item was awarded to the online party member who completed the objective. Then review the quest’s current stage and the server log for an error. Restore the most recent world backup before using commands or manually replacing story items; changing progression by hand can create a state that later quests do not recognize.
Updates, compatibility and version discipline
Nightfallcraft’s files are active and details can change. The 2026 update notes referenced for this guide include changes to translations, quests, boss spawning and Epic Fight integrations. Those changes can affect wording, objective triggers and combat behavior even when the Minecraft version remains 1.20.1.
- Check the files page before updating. Confirm the new client and server release numbers and read its change notes.
- Back up first. Copy the entire world and server configuration, not only the region folder.
- Update every participant. Clients and the server should use the same release unless the project explicitly documents compatibility.
- Test in a copy. Load the backup world in the new profile and verify that quests, translations, boss spawning and Epic Fight behavior work before opening the live server.
- Keep the old profile. Do not delete a working installation until the new one has been tested.
An older release may be the right choice for an existing world if the current version changes quest stages or boss behavior. The trade-off is that you will miss fixes and content in the newer build. Record the release number in your server name and backup folder so nobody updates by accident.
Troubleshooting common problems
“Incompatible” profile or dependency error
Open the profile details and verify both values: Minecraft must be 1.20.1 and the loader must be Forge. Recreate the profile from the project’s 2.2.9.7 file if either value is different. Do not try to repair a 1.19, 1.20.2 or Fabric profile by copying the mod JARs into it.
The game crashes during startup
- Confirm that the profile has enough assigned memory to meet the 8 GB recommendation and that the operating system is not running out of RAM.
- Remove any extra mods, shaders or manually replaced files and test the unmodified profile.
- Check the crash report and latest log for the first named mod or Java error, then compare it with the release’s included files.
- If the clean profile still fails, reinstall the exact ZIP and let CurseForge redownload dependencies.
The server starts but a player cannot join
Compare the client and server release numbers, Minecraft version and Forge loader. A player with 2.2.9.6 or a different loader can be rejected even if the server address is correct. Have the player launch the imported profile rather than a manually assembled mod folder.

Quest text or translations look different after an update
That can be an intentional release change: the 2026 updates referenced for the pack include translation and quest adjustments. Read the current quest wording, make a backup and avoid following an older guide’s item names or objective order until you confirm they still apply.
A boss does not spawn or an encounter behaves differently
Verify the quest stage, restart the server cleanly and check the release notes. Boss-spawning and Epic Fight integrations have changed in updates, so a missing encounter may be a version issue rather than a failed world. Test in a backup copy before deleting or recreating the arena.

A friend missed a story item
Review the FTB Party arrangement and who was online when the objective completed. The project warns that offline members can miss important items when main-quest progress is shared. Restore a backup if the party cannot advance, then complete the step with all affected players online.
