Decide what you are building before installing
A VPS is a production-like network boundary even when it is used for testing. Decide whether this machine is a private single-node service, a node reachable over a private network, or one member of a multi-node cluster.

- Single-node development or testing: bind Elasticsearch to loopback, use
discovery.type: single-node, and expose no public HTTP port. - Private application server: bind to the VPS’s private address, allow TCP 9200 only from the application network, and keep transport TCP 9300 private.
- Multi-node production cluster: use stable private addresses, configure seed hosts, complete the first master election, remove the initial-master setting, and open transport traffic only between cluster members.
Pin a supported Elastic major version before adding a package repository. Do not mix packages from different major versions, and check the current Elastic support matrix for your Linux release. Record the selected version in your deployment notes so that upgrades are intentional rather than an accidental result of the next package refresh.
Prerequisites and package layout
Use a fresh, updated 64-bit VPS with sudo access and a hostname that resolves consistently. Packages include a bundled OpenJDK, so a separate Java installation is normally unnecessary. Keep adequate disk space for both indexed data and transient segment merges.

Package installation creates the elasticsearch user and group. Never start the daemon as root. Check ownership if you move data or logs: the service account must be able to read configuration and write its data and log directories. Keep configuration files readable by the service and administrators only; do not solve a permission error by making them world-writable.
Install on Debian or Ubuntu
1. Update the operating system and import the signing key
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install -y apt-transport-https ca-certificates gnupg
Import Elastic’s signing key using the current package instructions for the major version you selected. Verify the key fingerprint and add the matching official Elastic APT repository for your distribution codename. Avoid third-party mirrors and do not silently fall back to an unpinned repository. The repository definition should identify the intended major-version channel so a routine update cannot jump to an incompatible release.
2. Install the package
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y elasticsearch
Inspect the package before enabling it. Confirm that the files are under the paths shown above and that systemd recognizes the service:
systemctl cat elasticsearch.service
apt-cache policy elasticsearch
If you download a package manually instead of using the repository, obtain the matching .sha512 file and verify it before installation:
shasum -a 512 -c elasticsearch-<version>-amd64.deb.sha512
Install only after the checksum reports a match, and retain the package and checksum with your change record. A valid checksum confirms file integrity; it does not replace checking that the download came from Elastic’s official location.

These commands should return no error. Correct ownership with chown only for directories you intentionally relocated; do not make the entire filesystem writable by the service account.
Install on RHEL, CentOS, Oracle Linux, SUSE, or openSUSE
1. Enable the official RPM repository
Install the repository signing key and the repository definition for your exact distribution and pinned Elastic major version using Elastic’s current RPM instructions. Refresh package metadata after adding it. On DNF systems use dnf; on older YUM-based systems use yum.
sudo dnf makecache
sudo dnf install -y elasticsearch
For a YUM-based host, the equivalent installation is:
sudo yum makecache
sudo yum install -y elasticsearch
As with Debian packages, verify the signing-key fingerprint and avoid an unpinned repository. For a manual RPM download, verify the matching SHA-512 file before installing:

2. Check the service and ownership
systemctl cat elasticsearch.service
rpm -qi elasticsearch
sudo -u elasticsearch test -r /etc/elasticsearch/elasticsearch.yml
sudo -u elasticsearch test -w /var/lib/elasticsearch
sudo -u elasticsearch test -w /var/log/elasticsearch
RPM installations use /etc/sysconfig/elasticsearch for environment overrides. Keep those overrides separate from the main YAML configuration. If a package update changes a vendor default, compare the unit and environment files rather than copying local edits over them blindly.
Apply VPS operating-system settings
Disable or deliberately control swap
Elastic warns that swapping causes long garbage-collection pauses, slow responses, and disconnects. Prefer disabling it:
sudo swapoff -a
sudoedit /etc/fstab
Remove or comment the swap entry in /etc/fstab, then confirm:
free -h
swapon --show
If policy requires swap, use a carefully tested alternative and ensure Elasticsearch’s memory behavior is understood. Do not assume a small swap file is harmless. Swapping can hurt an otherwise lightly loaded node when the operating system reclaims JVM pages at the wrong time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteReview kernel and process limits
Check vm.max_map_count, open-file limits, process and thread limits, and memory-locking requirements against Elastic’s system-configuration guidance. Make persistent service changes in a systemd drop-in rather than editing the vendor unit:
sysctl vm.max_map_count
systemctl show elasticsearch --property=LimitNOFILE --property=LimitNPROC --property=LimitMEMLOCK
sudo install -d /etc/systemd/system/elasticsearch.service.d
sudoedit /etc/systemd/system/elasticsearch.service.d/override.conf
Only add limits your workload needs. For memory locking, an example drop-in is:
[Service]
LimitMEMLOCK=infinity
After changing a drop-in, reload systemd:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
If the current vm.max_map_count is below Elastic’s documented requirement, set it persistently using your distribution’s sysctl configuration mechanism, then reload sysctl settings and restart Elasticsearch. Confirm the effective value after a reboot, not only immediately after a temporary command.
If you set bootstrap.memory_lock: true, verify after startup that the lock actually succeeded; a setting that is present but ineffective does not protect the heap from swapping. The effective systemd limits are more useful than a limit written in an unused shell profile.

Configure elasticsearch.yml
Edit /etc/elasticsearch/elasticsearch.yml deliberately. YAML indentation matters, and duplicate keys can produce confusing results. Keep a copy of the intended configuration in your change-management system, but protect any credentials and private-key material.
Single-node test configuration
cluster.name: logs-test
node.name: vps-1
discovery.type: single-node
network.host: 127.0.0.1
This keeps the HTTP API on loopback and avoids accidental exposure. Applications on the same VPS can use HTTPS on 127.0.0.1:9200. Do not use this topology as a template for a cluster: discovery.type: single-node intentionally bypasses normal multi-node discovery.

Private address for a remote application
cluster.name: logs-private
node.name: vps-1
network.host: 10.0.0.12
Replace the address with the VPS’s actual private interface. Binding to a non-loopback address activates production bootstrap checks, so the operating-system limits and security settings must be correct before startup. If the VPS has several interfaces, bind only to the interface that should carry Elasticsearch traffic instead of using an unrestricted wildcard address.
Multi-node discovery
cluster.name: logs-prod
node.name: vps-1
network.host: 10.0.0.12
discovery.seed_hosts: ["10.0.0.12", "10.0.0.13", "10.0.0.14"]
cluster.initial_master_nodes: ["vps-1", "vps-2", "vps-3"]
Use the real node names in cluster.initial_master_nodes only for the first election. Once the cluster has formed, remove that setting and restart only when the cluster’s operational procedure permits it. Leaving it in place can create a dangerous second-bootstrap scenario after a later restart.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →discovery.seed_hosts must contain addresses or names reachable over the private network. Allow TCP 9300 between cluster members, but do not expose it to the public internet. Ensure every node uses the same cluster name and compatible major version; a typo in a node name or a blocked transport connection can look like a failed election.
Set heap and JVM options safely
Elastic recommends automatic heap sizing for most production nodes. Measure the workload before overriding it; a larger heap is not automatically faster, and Elasticsearch also needs memory outside the JVM heap for file-system cache and native allocations. Leave headroom for the operating system, especially on a small VPS.
If an override is required, create a file ending in .options under /etc/elasticsearch/jvm.options.d/:
sudo install -d /etc/elasticsearch/jvm.options.d
sudoedit /etc/elasticsearch/jvm.options.d/heap.options
Put matching values in the file, for example:
-Xms4g
-Xmx4g
Use values appropriate for the VPS rather than copying this example. Matching initial and maximum heap values avoid resizing during operation. Do not edit the vendor’s root jvm.options file. Avoid ES_JAVA_OPTS for production heap overrides unless your deployment specifically requires it, because an environment override can obscure the effective configuration. Restart after changing JVM options and inspect the startup log for parsing errors.
Start Elasticsearch and complete initial security
Enable and start the service
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable elasticsearch.service
sudo systemctl start elasticsearch.service
sudo systemctl status elasticsearch.service
On first start, current packages automatically generate TLS material for HTTP and transport and create an enrollment token. Enrollment tokens are short-lived; Elastic documents a 30-minute validity window. Treat the token as a secret and generate a new one if it expires. Keep the generated certificate directory protected and do not copy private keys into application repositories.
Set the built-in administrator password
sudo /usr/share/elasticsearch/bin/elasticsearch-reset-password -u elastic
The exact binary path can vary with packaging; use the installed package’s bin directory if your distribution places it elsewhere. Store the generated password in a secret manager, not in shell history or a world-readable file. Create separate application credentials rather than sharing the built-in administrator account for routine indexing.
Trust the generated HTTP certificate
Clients should validate the server certificate with /etc/elasticsearch/certs/http_ca.crt. Do not disable certificate verification merely to make a client connect. Copy the CA certificate to a client host through a protected channel and restrict its permissions. A client that trusts the CA still needs valid Elasticsearch credentials; TLS trust and authentication solve different problems.

- Allow TCP 9200 in the VPS firewall only from the application or administration source addresses.
- Allow TCP 9300 only between known Elasticsearch nodes; never open it to client networks.
- Require HTTPS and credentials for every client, and verify the CA certificate.
Cloud-provider security groups and the host firewall both matter. A closed rule in one layer does not compensate for an accidentally open rule in the other. After changing rules, test from an allowed host and an explicitly disallowed host. Recheck these rules after a VPS migration or network-interface change.
Do not publish port 9200 directly to the public internet unless a carefully reviewed architecture requires it. If a public endpoint is unavoidable, place an authenticated proxy or private access layer in front of Elasticsearch and retain end-to-end certificate validation. Never expose transport port 9300 as a substitute for the HTTP API.
Validate the installation before sending production traffic
Check service and logs
sudo systemctl is-active elasticsearch
sudo journalctl -u elasticsearch --no-pager -n 100
sudo tail -n 100 /var/log/elasticsearch/*.log
Look for bootstrap-check failures, permission errors, bind failures, certificate errors, and out-of-memory events before troubleshooting the client. A service that is active but repeatedly restarting is not ready for traffic; inspect the complete startup sequence rather than relying on one successful status check.
Make an authenticated HTTPS request
curl --cacert /etc/elasticsearch/certs/http_ca.crt
-u elastic
https://127.0.0.1:9200/
Enter the password when prompted. A successful response identifies the node and cluster and confirms that TLS, credentials, and the HTTP listener work together. From a remote client, repeat the test with the copied CA certificate and the private DNS name or address that clients are expected to use.
Check cluster health
curl --cacert /etc/elasticsearch/certs/http_ca.crt
-u elastic
'https://127.0.0.1:9200/_cluster/health?pretty'
For a newly created single-node cluster, confirm that the node count and status match the intended topology. In a multi-node deployment, check that every expected node joined and that no node is repeatedly leaving and rejoining. Validate from an allowed network location that port 9200 responds, and from a disallowed location that the firewall blocks it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand and fix bootstrap-check failures
Elasticsearch applies stricter bootstrap checks when it binds to a non-loopback address. Typical failures and remedies include:
- Memory locking failed: either remove
bootstrap.memory_lock: trueor add the systemdLimitMEMLOCKsetting, reload systemd, restart, and verify the lock. - Too few virtual-memory map areas: raise
vm.max_map_countpersistently according to Elastic’s documented value, then restart the service. - File descriptors or threads too low: raise the corresponding systemd limits in a drop-in, reload systemd, and confirm the effective limits for the running process.
- Swap detected: disable swap and remove its persistent mount, or adopt a tested memory policy that meets the workload’s requirements.
- Publish or bind address failure: verify that the address exists on the VPS, that DNS resolves consistently, and that the firewall permits only intended paths.
- Discovery or election failure: verify seed-host reachability, node names, cluster name, and private TCP 9300 rules. Remove
cluster.initial_master_nodesafter the first election. - Permission denied: restore ownership and modes so the
elasticsearchaccount can read configuration and write data, logs, and certificate-related files.
Fix one class of failure at a time, restart, and read the new log output. Do not bypass bootstrap checks simply to force startup. If a setting appears correct but the check still fails, inspect the effective systemd unit, the running process limits, and the interface selected by network.host.
Back up and operate the cluster
Configure a snapshot repository and schedule snapshots before indexing irreplaceable data. Elastic states that snapshots are the only reliable and supported way to back up a cluster. Copying /var/lib/elasticsearch as a filesystem backup is not a supported restore method. A filesystem copy can also capture changing files while segments are being merged, leaving no supported recovery path.
Test restoration into an isolated environment and document repository credentials, encryption keys, retention, and the procedure for restoring individual indices. Monitor disk watermarks, heap pressure, rejected requests, certificate expiry, and failed snapshots. A snapshot job that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
Elasticsearch’s JVM garbage-collection logs rotate at 64 MB and can use up to 2 GB of disk according to current Elastic implementation documentation. Include log-directory capacity in disk alerts rather than monitoring indexed data alone. Keep enough free space for both logs and segment merges; a full filesystem can prevent normal recovery.
Best Value
Choose the deployment model that fits your requirement
| Decision | Self-managed Linux VPS | Managed service |
|---|---|---|
| Distribution support | Choose Debian/Ubuntu packages or RPM packages for supported RHEL-family and SUSE-family systems. | The provider controls the operating-system image and package lifecycle. |
| Management burden | You maintain updates, limits, certificates, firewalls, monitoring, and snapshots. | Infrastructure operations are delegated, but network and data-governance choices remain yours. |
| Network exposure | Loopback is safest; private addressing is appropriate for remote applications; public binding requires extra controls. | Private endpoints and provider firewalls may be available, depending on the service. |
| Security setup | Current packages generate initial TLS and certificates; you must distribute trust and manage credentials. | The service supplies its own endpoint and security workflow. |
| Resilience | A single VPS has a single failure domain. Multi-node clusters need separate failure domains and snapshots. | High availability depends on the provider’s selected tier and region. |
A VPS can reduce cost and provide direct control, but every operational task remains yours. A managed service can reduce package and kernel maintenance, yet you still need to design client authentication, private connectivity, retention, and restoration procedures.

Pre-production checklist
- Supported Linux release and pinned Elastic major version are recorded.
- Repository signing key and package source were verified.
- Elasticsearch runs as the unprivileged service account, never root.
- Swap policy, memory-map count, file limits, and thread limits are persistent and tested.
cluster.name,node.name, bind address, and discovery settings match the intended topology.- Heap settings, if overridden, are in a dedicated
jvm.options.dfile with matching initial and maximum values. - TLS validation works with
http_ca.crt, and theelasticpassword is stored securely. - Port 9200 is restricted to required clients; port 9300 is restricted to cluster members.
- Cluster health, logs, firewall behavior, and restart behavior have been tested.
- Snapshot repositories, schedules, retention, and a restoration test are documented.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I install Elasticsearch on Ubuntu or Debian VPS?
Pin a supported Elastic major version, import Elastic’s signing key, add the matching official APT repository, run apt-get update, and install the elasticsearch package. Verify the package paths and service account, then configure elasticsearch.yml before enabling and starting systemd.
How do I install Elasticsearch on CentOS, RHEL, or SUSE?
Add Elastic’s official RPM repository for the exact distribution and selected major version, verify its signing key, refresh metadata with dnf or yum, and install elasticsearch. RPM environment overrides belong in /etc/sysconfig/elasticsearch.
What should go in elasticsearch.yml for one VPS?
For a local test, set a meaningful cluster.name, node.name, discovery.type: single-node, and network.host: 127.0.0.1. If another server must connect, bind to the VPS’s private address, restrict port 9200, and satisfy production bootstrap checks.
Why does Elasticsearch fail bootstrap checks after I set network.host?
Binding to a non-loopback address enables production checks. Review swap, vm.max_map_count, file descriptors, process and thread limits, memory locking, permissions, and the publish address. Read the systemd journal and Elasticsearch log, correct one failure, reload systemd when needed, and restart.
How do I expose Elasticsearch securely to another server?
Use a private bind address, permit TCP 9200 only from approved application or administration addresses, keep TCP 9300 limited to cluster members, require HTTPS and credentials, and make clients validate http_ca.crt. Apply both cloud security-group and VPS firewall rules.
Can I run Elasticsearch as root on a VPS?
No. Package installations create the unprivileged elasticsearch account, and Elastic requires the service to run under that account. Check that it can read configuration and write data, logs, and required certificate-related files instead of granting broad filesystem permissions.
Should I set an Elasticsearch heap size manually?
Automatic heap sizing is recommended for most production nodes. If measurement shows that an override is necessary, place matching -Xms and -Xmx values in a new .options file under /etc/elasticsearch/jvm.options.d/. Do not edit the root vendor file.
What is the correct backup method for Elasticsearch?
Configure and schedule snapshots to a snapshot repository, then test restoration in an isolated environment. Elastic identifies snapshots as the only reliable supported backup. Copying /var/lib/elasticsearch as a filesystem backup is not a supported restore procedure.

The Bottom Line
A secure Elasticsearch VPS is not just a successful package install: pin the version, apply the kernel and memory prerequisites, configure the topology intentionally, keep the API private, verify TLS and credentials, restrict 9200/9300 with firewalls, and protect the data with tested snapshots.
